The honest job description for Display
Display advertising shows banners, images and responsive ads on partner websites, apps, Gmail and YouTube placements. Nobody on those pages typed a query, so the click rate is lower and the job is different from Search.
Display does three things well: it reminds people who already visited your site, it introduces a brand to people who match a profile, and it keeps a product visible during a long decision.
It does one thing badly when left on defaults, which is spend money on accidental clicks. Children's games, low-quality apps and sites built for ad revenue will happily take your budget. A large part of the work is therefore control, through placement exclusions, content filters, audience layers and frequent checking of where ads actually appeared.
Our job is to treat Display as a supporting channel with a clear role, then measure it by that role. If you want a quick walk through the differences first, the search versus display lesson is a good start.
Display set-up and upkeep
What we set up and maintain once the plan is agreed.
- Objective and role definitionAwareness, remarketing or prospecting, decided first because it changes every setting that follows.
- Audience buildYour audiences from site visitors and customer lists, plus in-market, affinity and custom segments based on search behaviour and interests.
- Placement and content controlsExclusion lists for apps, sites and categories, content-type exclusions and regular placement report reviews.
- Creative setResponsive display ads with headlines, descriptions, logos and images, plus uploaded banners in the standard sizes where design allows.
- Frequency and budget rulesCaps so the same person does not see the same banner endlessly, and budgets split between prospecting and remarketing.
- Conversion and view-through setupClick conversions tracked cleanly, with view-through and assisted data kept in a separate column so it never inflates the headline result.
- Monthly report and callReach, clicks, conversions, placements, creative performance and next tests, explained in plain language.
Why trust Junaid with this work
On Google Display Ads Management, marketing advice is only worth following when it comes from someone who has run it. This is the track record behind the service.
Hands-on experience
18+ years in search and paid media, with 500+ clients served across 48 countries and over $20M in ad spend managed. That experience applies directly to Google Display Ads Management.
Certified expertise
Google Ads and Analytics certified, Google Blue and Green Belt certified, Facebook Blueprint Foundations trained and six Harvard certificates. Applied to Google Display Ads Management work.
Recognised work
National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing, who also developed SEO course material for the DigiSkills programme. See the full profile.
Transparent by default
Written scope before work starts, no guaranteed rankings and ad and analytics accounts that stay in your name. Client feedback is on the reviews page.
Creative that earns a click
Display punishes lazy creative faster than any other Google channel.
One message per ad
A banner that tries to say three things says none. Pick the offer, the proof or the reminder, and commit.
Legible at small sizes
Many placements are tiny. Text must read on a phone screen without squinting, and the logo must be visible.
A visible next step
Button text that says what happens next, such as Book a visit or See the range, outperforms vague wording.
Consistent with the landing page
Same offer, same colours, same wording. Mismatch makes people leave in seconds.
Fresh variants
Audiences tire of a banner quickly. We plan replacements rather than waiting for results to drop.
Local language where it helps
Urdu or bilingual creative can suit Pakistani audiences. We test it rather than assume.

Choosing the right Display approach
Different goals call for different campaign set-ups. We usually recommend one, not all.
Goal | Audience | Main measure | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
Win back site visitors | Past visitors, cart abandoners | Conversions from returning users | Overly long windows and repeated banners |
Introduce the brand locally | Location plus in-market segments | Branded search lift, direct traffic | Reach that is wide but unqualified |
Prospect for leads | Custom segments from search terms | Qualified leads | Low-intent clicks and form spam |
Support an event or launch | Interests plus remarketing | Visits and sign-ups in a set window | Creative that goes stale quickly |
Retarget buyers for repeat sales | Customer list matches | Repeat orders | Showing offers to people who already bought |
Build, launch and tune
A realistic path from the first call to a stable programme.
- Goal and audience workshopWe decide who the ads are for and what they should do next, using your customer data where you have it.
- Tracking and audience listsGoogle tag and GA4 events are checked, remarketing lists are created and sized, and consent requirements for your markets are noted.
- Creative productionWe write copy and brief or build images. You approve before anything goes live.
- Controlled launchSeparate campaigns for remarketing and prospecting, with exclusions already in place and moderate budgets.
- Placement and audience pruningAfter the first reporting period we remove poor placements and weak audiences and redirect spend.
- Creative refresh and scalingBanners wear out. We rotate new variants and widen the audiences that have proved they convert.
Display alongside the rest of the account
The strongest set-ups use it as a second touch: Search captures the person who is ready, and Display keeps the brand visible for the person who left to compare.
We watch for overlap, because showing banners to people who have already converted wastes budget, so converted audiences are excluded from remarketing lists as soon as a sale or enquiry is recorded.
Performance Max already serves display inventory, so running a separate Display campaign against the same audience can double-bid.
A practical rule we follow is that every campaign should have one sentence describing why it exists, and if we cannot write that sentence, the campaign is paused.
A restaurant or clinic can use location targeting and short offers to stay present in a neighbourhood, a role that fits well with healthcare marketing for practices that want recall between visits.
Stack and creative requirements
We use mainstream tools. Creative is often the bottleneck, so we plan for it early.
Google Ads and GA4
Campaign controls, audience lists and cross-checking of what visitors did after the ad.
Google Tag Manager
Remarketing tags and conversion events, so audiences can be built without developer delays. See our conversion tracking service.
Image and logo assets
Clear product or service images, a transparent logo and brand colours. Weak photography weakens every ad.
Video where available
Short videos can be added to responsive display or paired with YouTube ads management.
Landing pages
A page that continues the banner's promise. Poorly matched pages are the most common reason Display looks bad.
Looker Studio
Dashboard showing placements, frequency and conversions in one view.
Brand safety, policy and privacy
We set content-type exclusions, block categories that do not fit your brand and review placement reports.
Sensitive sectors such as healthcare, finance and supplements face extra advertising rules on personalised and remarketing targeting, and these change, so we check the current Google policy before building lists.
If you serve visitors in the UK, Europe or other regulated regions, your site needs the right cookie notice and tag behaviour.
Scope, cost drivers and timeline
Media spend depends on how competitive your audiences are, the countries targeted and how many people you want to reach.
We quote after reviewing your account, your goal and your creative situation.
On timelines, remarketing can start generating returns within weeks once audience lists are filled, while prospecting needs longer because it measures assisted influence. We will tell you at the start which metrics will mean something and when.
Situations where Display is the wrong purchase
Starting with Google Search ads management or SEO to build visitors is cheaper and more useful.
For online stores, Performance Max and Shopping often outperform plain Display for direct sales, though banners still help with abandoned carts.
Our Google Ads for ecommerce page explains how the pieces combine, and Performance Max management covers the automated route.
Measuring results without flattering the numbers
Impressions are cheap, view-through conversions credit ads that may never have been noticed, and click-through rates are naturally small.
What we do track closely: cost per qualified lead or sale from click conversions, assisted conversions in GA4, repeat-visit rate from remarketing audiences, branded search and direct traffic movement over the campaign period, and placement quality.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Is Google Display worth it for a small business?
Often, but mainly for remarketing. A small budget spent bringing back existing visitors usually does more than the same budget spent on broad prospecting. We would start there and test prospecting later.
How long should I wait before judging Display?
Remarketing can be judged after a few weeks once audiences are large enough. Prospecting needs a longer window because its value shows partly in assisted conversions and later branded search.
Why are my display clicks so cheap but never convert?
Cheap clicks often come from accidental taps in apps and low-quality sites. Placement exclusions, audience tightening and a change of conversion goal usually fix much of it. That is a standard part of our clean-up.
Do you design the banners?
We write the copy and can adapt your brand assets into responsive ads. For custom banner sets we work with your designer or arrange design support, agreed before launch.
Which sizes and formats should I prepare?
Responsive display ads need headlines, descriptions, images in landscape and square, and a logo. Uploaded banners usually cover the common rectangle, leaderboard and mobile sizes. We give you a checklist before production starts.
How is Display different from YouTube ads?
Display uses images and text on partner sites and apps. YouTube uses video inside the YouTube environment. They share audience tools, and many campaigns use both, which is why we manage them together.
Can Display help ecommerce stores?
Yes, mostly through dynamic remarketing that shows people the products they viewed. Combined with a clean product feed, it works well alongside Shopping and Performance Max. Our Merchant Center setup covers the feed side.
How do I start?
Send us your website and goals through the contact page. We review your tracking and audience sizes first, then tell you honestly whether Display deserves a share of your budget. You can also read how we run the wider service in Google Ads management.
