What a disavow file does

A disavow file is a text file you upload to Google's disavow tool to tell Google that you do not want certain links to be considered when it assesses your site. It is meant for situations where you have a pattern of unnatural, low-quality or spammy links that you cannot get removed, and where those links either caused a manual action or are likely to.

Google has said that it is generally good at ignoring spammy links on its own, so most websites never need one. Used unnecessarily, a disavow file can remove links that were actually helping. Treat it as a precision tool for a real problem, not routine maintenance.

The disavow file format

The file must be plain text encoded in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, with one entry per line. There are three kinds of line:

  • A full URL, such as https://spam-site.example/page.html, which disavows links from that single page.
  • A domain entry, such as domain:spam-site.example, which disavows links from every page on that domain and its subdomains.
  • A comment, starting with #, which Google ignores and which helps you remember why something was added.

Limits: the file can be at most 2 MB, may have at most 100,000 lines including comments and blanks, and each URL can be at most 2,048 characters. The generator warns you when you approach these limits. Use the domain: prefix whenever the whole site is spammy, since listing individual URLs from a spam network is slow and easy to get incomplete.

How to use the tool

From list to upload in four steps.

  1. Collect the linksExport links from Google Search Console and your backlink tool, then pick the ones that are genuinely spammy.
  2. Paste and generatePaste them above and choose whether bare domains become domain: entries.
  3. Review and downloadCheck the preview, fix any skipped lines and download disavow.txt.
  4. Upload to GoogleOpen Google's disavow tool, select your property and upload the file.

How to decide what to disavow

Start by identifying the links that look manufactured: comment spam, hacked sites, link networks, scraped copies, sites in unrelated languages and sitewide footer links from irrelevant domains. Compare them with links you earned or agreed to, such as press coverage, partners and directories. If you ever bought links or took part in link exchanges, those are candidates too.

Do not disavow links just because a third-party tool gives them a high spam score. Those scores are estimates and often flag harmless sites. Look at each domain: does it exist for readers, or only to place links? If a link comes from a real site that you could ask to remove it, contacting the owner is better than disavowing.

Before uploading, save a copy of any older disavow file. Uploading a new file replaces the previous one, so always include earlier entries that still apply. For the wider context, read how to fix technical SEO issues, white hat organic SEO and our SEO agency page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is a disavow file?

A text file listing links or domains you ask Google to ignore when assessing your site.

Do I need to disavow links?

Rarely. Most sites do not, and Google ignores most spammy links automatically. Use it for a manual action or a clear pattern of manipulative links.

What is the domain: prefix?

It disavows all links from a whole domain, including subdomains, rather than a single URL.

What are the file limits?

2 MB, 100,000 lines and 2,048 characters per URL.

Does this tool upload my list anywhere?

No. It runs entirely in your browser.

How do I upload the file?

Open Google's disavow links tool, choose your property, upload disavow.txt and confirm.

Can I undo a disavow?

Yes. Upload a new file without those entries; Google reprocesses the file over time.

How long does it take to work?

Google applies the file the next time it recrawls the links, which can take weeks.

Should I disavow links based on spam scores alone?

No. Review each domain manually.

Can you do it for me?

Yes. Our SEO team can audit and prepare it as part of a link audit.

Do I always need a disavow file?

No. Google ignores most low-quality links. Use it for clear manipulative patterns or a manual action.
