Payment gateway plugin development that gets paid orders confirmed every time
We build payment gateway plugins that connect WooCommerce and WordPress sites to the processors your customers actually use, including local Pakistani options and international services. It is for merchants whose chosen provider has no working plugin, or whose existing one drops callbacks and leaves orders unpaid.

- Card data never touches your server when the provider offers hosted fields or redirects
- Webhook handling, retries and order status tested against failed and duplicate payments
- Experience with local payment flows including wallets, bank transfer and cash on delivery
Gateway integrations and the failures they meet in the field
A payment plugin looks simple in a demo: customer clicks pay, money arrives, order turns green. Real stores meet the awkward cases.
The customer closes the browser during the redirect. The provider sends the confirmation twice. The bank times out and the customer retries. Stock is reduced, but the payment never arrives. Plugins that ignore those cases create manual reconciliation work for your staff and angry emails from buyers.
Our approach is to treat the server-to-server callback as the source of truth and the browser return as a convenience. The order status changes only after the provider confirms, and every change is logged with the reference. That design is slower to build than a quick redirect script, and it is the reason our plugins behave under messy conditions.
This service suits stores whose provider has an API but no maintained WooCommerce plugin, merchants who need extra behaviour such as split payments or custom fees, and software companies who want a gateway module for their own platform. It is a poor fit if a maintained official plugin already exists and meets your needs, in which case configuring it is cheaper and safer.
Inside a gateway plugin
The core of the work is not the payment form. It is everything around it.
- Provider API reviewWe read the provider documentation, test credentials and sandbox, and flag missing features before the quote is final.
- Gateway classA proper WooCommerce payment gateway with settings, enable and disable logic, currency and country restrictions.
- Checkout experienceRedirect, hosted fields, iframe or tokenised card flow, whichever the provider supports, working on classic and block checkout.
- Webhook endpointA verified callback that checks signatures, handles duplicates and updates the order once.
- Refunds and voidsAdmin-triggered refunds through the provider API where supported, with notes written to the order.
- Order status mappingPending, processing, failed and on-hold states mapped carefully to provider outcomes.
- Logging and reconciliationA readable log of requests and responses, with sensitive values masked, to help your finance team match payments.
- Security reviewSanitised input, verified signatures, no secrets in code, and guidance on PCI responsibilities based on the integration type.

Build and certification path
Some providers add their own approval step, so we plan for it from the start.
- Provider and flow selectionWe compare what your provider supports and recommend the least risky flow, usually hosted fields or redirect over raw card capture.
- Sandbox buildThe first version runs against test credentials, covering success, decline, timeout and cancellation.
- Edge-case testingWe replay duplicate webhooks, late callbacks and partial refunds to see how orders behave.
- Provider reviewIf the provider requires a certification or test script, we run it with you and fix whatever it finds.
- Live cut-overCredentials switch to production with a small real transaction, checked end to end including the refund.
- Monitoring windowEarly live orders are reviewed against the provider dashboard before we close the project.

Integration types compared
The right pattern depends on provider support, your risk tolerance and checkout design.
Pattern | Customer experience | Security load on you | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
Full redirect | Leaves your site to pay | Lowest | Local gateways and simple launches |
Hosted fields or iframe | Pays on your page | Low | Card payments with brand control |
Tokenised API | Pays on your page, you call the API | Moderate | Subscriptions and saved cards |
Bank or wallet transfer | Pays outside, confirms later | Low, but reconciliation heavy | Local transfers and mobile wallets |
Cash on delivery | Pays at the door | None online, high fraud risk | Pakistan retail |
Effort drivers
We quote after reading the provider documentation. These are the levers.
Documentation quality
Clear, current API docs speed things up. Sparse or outdated ones mean more testing against the sandbox.
Feature depth
A basic charge is quick. Refunds, subscriptions, saved cards and multi-currency add stages.
Certification requirements
If the provider reviews your integration, we allow time for rounds of fixes.
Checkout type
Supporting both classic and block checkout means two front-end paths to test.
Fraud and risk rules
Rules for order values, countries or repeat failures need extra logic.
Platform
WordPress and WooCommerce are our default. For Shopify merchants see Shopify payment gateway integration.
Pakistan payment realities
Cash on delivery remains common, mobile wallets and bank transfers are widely used, and each provider has its own sign-up process, settlement rules and API quality.
We cannot speak for any provider's current terms, so we ask you to confirm fees, settlement times and onboarding requirements directly with them before development begins.
A common one is a hybrid: cash on delivery for new buyers with a phone confirmation step, and online payment for returning ones.
We cover this thinking in our guide to custom payment gateway plugins for Pakistani stores.
Settlement in USD, multi-currency display and tax handling are worth raising in the first call.
Order states and reconciliation, in detail
We start from a state table: what the provider can report, what the order should become, what stock should do and what email should go to whom.
Each row is agreed with your finance person before we write the code, so there is no guessing when a payment is pending, authorised, captured, failed or expired.
If the provider sends the same event three times, the order changes once. We store event identifiers and ignore repeats.
Finance teams need to match bank settlements to orders, so we store the provider's transaction reference on every order and expose it in the admin list.
If you want an export of daily transactions with fees and settlement dates, it can be added, using the fields the provider's API exposes.
Partial refunds, refunds after a long delay and refunds on cash-on-delivery orders all behave differently, and each is tested on staging before launch.
For related data work such as sending purchase events to ad platforms, we connect with Meta Pixel and Conversions API setup.
Security and compliance responsibilities
Secret keys live in settings or environment variables, never in public files. Logs mask card and account details.
When card entry happens on the provider's page or in their hosted fields, your scope under card industry standards is generally smaller than when you collect card numbers yourself.
We build to keep your exposure as low as the provider's design allows.
We also review the integration against common web flaws before launch, using the same method as our plugin security and code audit, and keep the plugin patched through maintenance and updates.
Working across borders
Many of our payment clients sell to buyers abroad while the business is based in Pakistan, or sell inside Pakistan with a foreign owner.
That raises practical points: which currency the customer sees, which one is settled, who bears conversion costs and which provider will onboard your company.
If your provider needs a test call or a certification session, we schedule it in their working hours and yours.
Cases where we advise against building
A custom build adds a code base you must keep updated whenever the provider changes its API, and payment code is the last place to cut corners.
Before switching to live credentials we run through a short checklist: webhook URL reachable over HTTPS, correct currency and country settings, customer emails reviewed, refund path tested, and a named person on your side who watches the provider dashboard during the first day.
We also leave you a plain-language guide for what to do if the provider has an outage, such as pausing the payment method or switching to an alternative, so your team is not improvising under pressure.
If a provider only offers that route, we recommend a different provider or a hosted form. The compliance burden and breach risk are not worth it for most merchants.
A review by our plugin security and code audit team can show whether the fault lies in the plugin or elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Can you integrate a local Pakistani payment provider?
Usually, if the provider offers a documented API and sandbox access. We review the documentation before quoting. If the provider has no stable API, we tell you before work starts, and may suggest a different route such as a redirect flow.
Is it safe to build a custom payment gateway?
It is safe when card data stays with the provider through hosted fields or redirects, signatures are verified and secrets are stored properly. We design for the lowest compliance burden. Your obligations still depend on your provider, so confirm those with them.
How long does a gateway plugin take?
A redirect-style gateway with refunds can be built in a few weeks. Tokenised flows with subscriptions and certification rounds take longer. Provider response time is often the biggest variable, outside our control.
Will it work with WooCommerce block checkout?
Yes, we build and test for both classic and block checkout. Block support needs a separate JavaScript integration, which we include in the scope when your theme or store uses it.
What if my provider changes their API later?
Providers do change versions. That is where plugin maintenance and updates helps, since we watch notices and update the code before old endpoints are retired.
Do you handle Shopify or custom platforms too?
Yes. Shopify has its own payment app rules, and we build gateway modules for custom platforms as well. See the plugin development overview or ask on the contact page.
