Plugin security & code audit that finds the flaws attackers look for

We review WordPress and WooCommerce plugin code, custom or commercial, for security weaknesses and quality problems, then deliver a prioritised report and, if you want, the fixes. A plugin security & code audit suits owners of custom plugins, agencies inheriting code and stores that handle customer data.

By Junaid Tariq Reviewed October 2026

  • Manual code review against the classic WordPress vulnerability classes, not only a scanner run
  • Findings ranked by exploitability and business impact, with fix guidance
  • Re-test after fixes so the report ends with confirmed closures

Plugins are the front door

Most compromised WordPress sites are not broken into through WordPress core. They fall through plugins: an unprotected admin action, a form that trusts user input, a file upload that accepts more than images, an API endpoint that anyone can call.

These flaws hide in code that works fine for honest users, which is why nobody spots them until they are exploited.

An audit looks at the code the way an attacker would, then reports in a way a business owner can act on. We read the plugin, trace how data moves from a request to the database and back to the screen, and check every point where a decision about who may do what is made. A scanner finds known patterns. A person finds logic flaws that scanners cannot see.

This service suits owners of bespoke plugins, agencies who inherited a client site, stores taking orders and personal data, and companies preparing for a customer security review. It also helps after an incident, to find how the intruder got in and whether the same weakness exists in other plugins.

For general site hygiene such as passwords, hosting and backups, start with our WordPress security checklist and the WordPress security hardening service.

Areas the audit examines

Every review follows the same spine, adapted to what the plugin does.

  • Input handlingSanitising and validation of everything from forms, URLs, headers and uploaded files, including data from other systems.
  • Output escapingWhether values printed into HTML, attributes, scripts and admin screens are escaped for the right context, which prevents cross-site scripting.
  • Database queriesUse of prepared statements and safe query building to prevent SQL injection.
  • Access controlCapability checks on every action, including AJAX and REST routes that run without a logged-in page.
  • Request forgery protectionNonces or equivalent tokens on state-changing requests.
  • File handlingUpload types, storage paths, download endpoints and any use of includes built from user data.
  • Secrets and data exposureAPI keys, tokens and personal data in code, logs, exports and error messages.
  • Dependencies and updatesThird-party libraries, their versions and known advisories, plus how the plugin handles its own updates.

Trustworthiness

Transparent by default

A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.

Audit process and hand-over

A written scope keeps the audit honest about what was and was not reviewed.

  1. ScopingWe agree which plugins, versions and features are in scope, and whether we receive source access, a staging site or both.
  2. Automated passStatic analysis and dependency checks to catch the obvious patterns and give us a map of the code.
  3. Manual reviewWe follow each entry point through the code, read the risky functions line by line and test suspected flaws on staging.
  4. ReportFindings are written with severity, location, how it could be abused, and how to fix it in plain language.
  5. Walkthrough callWe explain the findings to your team and agree the order of fixes.
  6. Fix and re-testOptional remediation by us or your developers, followed by a check that each issue is closed.

Severity ratings explained

We rate by what could happen on your site, not only by textbook categories.

Rating
Typical example
Expected response
Critical
Unauthenticated action that changes data or reads private records
Fix or disable immediately
High
Missing capability check giving a low-level user admin actions
Fix in the next release cycle
Medium
Reflected output without escaping, limited reach
Schedule within the next sprint
Low
Verbose errors, weak defaults, missing hardening
Group with routine maintenance
Advisory
Code quality or future-risk observations

Factors that decide audit effort

Lines of code are a poor measure. These matter more.

Size and structure

A single-purpose plugin is quick to review. A large codebase with many entry points takes longer.

Exposure

Public forms, payments and APIs carry more risk than an admin-only tool.

Data sensitivity

Plugins touching personal, financial or health data need deeper review.

Code readability

Clean, organised code is faster to audit than minified or heavily generated code.

Integrations

Connections to external services widen the surface. See plugin API integration for how we build them.

Fix involvement

Report only, report with guidance, or report with full remediation and retest.

Limits of any audit

An audit is a snapshot.

It reports what we found in the agreed scope at that point in time, and it cannot prove that no flaw exists. New vulnerabilities appear as code changes and as researchers find new techniques.

Anyone who claims a plugin is fully secure is selling certainty that does not exist.
An audit also does not replace good habits.

Weak admin passwords, unpatched hosting and stale user accounts defeat clean code. We will mention what we notice, but the scope is the plugin unless agreed otherwise.

If you need ongoing protection rather than a point-in-time review, pair it with plugin maintenance and updates, so reviewed code stays reviewed as the platform changes.

Audit clients and common situations

Three groups get the most value.

First, owners of custom plugins that handle money, customer records or uploaded files, where one mistake becomes a breach.

Second, agencies that take over sites built by others and need to know what they are inheriting before they put their name on it.
Third, companies answering a client's security questionnaire who want an independent look at the code.
We are also called after an incident.

In that case, the audit works backward from the symptoms, such as unexpected admin users or injected links, to find the entry point.

We work from Lahore with overlap for the USA, UK and UAE, so urgent findings can be discussed the same day.

If you are weighing a build from scratch instead, our WordPress plugin development service bakes these checks in from the first line.

Evidence you receive

We do not hand over a generic scanner export.

The report names files and functions, shows the problem code, explains the abuse path in plain steps and gives a corrected pattern.

Where we confirmed an issue on staging, we say so, and where it is a suspicion we mark it that way.
Remediation advice is written to be useful to the person who will apply it.

For each issue we show the vulnerable pattern, explain the corrected approach and point to the WordPress function that handles it, such as escaping and sanitising helpers or capability checks.

That makes fixes quicker and reduces the chance of repeating the same mistake in the next feature.

If your team is small, we can also run a short session on secure coding habits for the developers who maintain the plugin.

After fixes, we repeat the relevant checks and mark each item open or closed.

You end with a short summary suitable for sharing with a client or partner who asks for evidence of review, although we do not provide certificates or compliance sign-off.

Our own experience from 500+ websites and plugin builds informs the review, and the recurring patterns are covered in our article on plugin security: common vulnerabilities and fixes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is the difference between a security audit and a code audit?

A security audit looks for ways the plugin can be abused. A code audit also covers quality: structure, performance, maintainability and standards. We usually combine both, because poor structure often hides security faults.

Can you audit a plugin I bought from a marketplace?

Yes, subject to its licence. We typically review the code you are licensed to use and report issues. For commercial plugins, we help you report findings to the author, since the fix has to come from them.

Do you perform penetration testing on live sites?

Our focus is code review and testing on staging, which is safer for production. We do not attack live sites without a written agreement, and we do not test systems you do not own or control.

How long does a plugin audit take?

A small plugin may take a few days, while a large one with many features takes weeks. We confirm the timeline after scoping, once we can see the size and number of entry points.

Will you fix the issues you find?

If you want us to. Remediation is a separate step so you can choose your developer. We re-test whoever applies the fixes. For wider hardening, see our performance work and the WordPress plugin development service.

Can this help after a hack?

Yes. We look for how the attacker got in, check for backdoors in plugin files and advise on clean-up and prevention. Contact us early through the contact page if you suspect a breach, and change credentials first.
