Gutenberg block development for content teams who want structure without code
We build custom Gutenberg blocks, block patterns and editor tools for WordPress, so your team can publish complex layouts from the native editor with consistent design and clean markup. Gutenberg block development suits publishers, product sites, agencies and theme developers.

The case for custom blocks
The block editor is WordPress's own page-building system, which means content stored in it stays portable and does not depend on a third-party builder. For publishers and sites with recurring content types, custom blocks are the cleanest way to give editors structure.
A review block with rating and pros and cons, a course card, a team member grid, a call-out with an icon, a pricing table: each can be a single block with fields, instead of a pile of columns and copy-paste.
The benefit is consistency. When a designer updates the style of a call-out, every instance changes together. Editors cannot break the layout because only the right controls are exposed. Markup stays semantic, which helps accessibility and search engines read the page, and styles load only when the block is present.
We build two kinds. Static blocks save their markup into the post and suit presentational content. Dynamic blocks render on the server each time and suit lists, related posts, product highlights or anything that must stay current. We also create block patterns and templates so editors start from a ready layout, and with full site editing and theme.json we can align blocks with the design tokens of a block theme.
Deliverables for a block project
A typical engagement produces the following, adapted to your block list.
- Block setEach block has a clear name, icon, category, controls in the sidebar and a polished editor preview.
- Block.json metadataRegistration, attributes, supports and asset handles defined in the standard way.
- Dynamic renderingPHP render callbacks for blocks that need live data, with caching where it makes sense.
- Patterns and templatesReady layouts for common pages such as service pages, landing pages and article layouts.
- Styles and variationsBlock styles that tie into theme.json colours, spacing and typography.
- Inner blocks and lockingNested layouts with locked structure so editors fill content but cannot break design.
- Accessibility and i18nKeyboard support, labels, translation-ready strings and right-to-left support for Urdu content.
- Plugin or theme packagingDelivered as a plugin or inside your theme, with a build process and documentation.

Static blocks, dynamic blocks and patterns
Choosing the right type avoids rework later.
Type | Use it for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
Static block | Presentational content such as call-outs or feature rows | Changing markup later can invalidate saved posts |
Dynamic block | Lists, latest posts, product data, live values | Server cost if not cached |
Block pattern | Reusable layouts built from existing blocks | Not updated in old posts once inserted |
Synced pattern | Content that must update everywhere | Editors need to know it is shared |
Block variation | A new preset of an existing block | Limited to what the block already supports |

Editor and front-end quality standards
In the editor it is React, so we keep components small, avoid heavy state and make the sidebar controls obvious.
On the front end it is HTML and CSS, so we output simple semantic elements, use native features where possible and keep JavaScript to the blocks that truly need it, such as tabs or sliders.
Static blocks can be invalidated if their saved markup changes, which shows editors a scary recovery message.
We plan attributes carefully, use deprecations when a block must change and prefer dynamic rendering for anything likely to evolve.
Workflow from design to release
The editing experience is the product, so we test it with real editors.
- Content auditWe review existing posts and pages to find repeated structures that deserve a block.
- Block specificationFor each block we agree the fields, the layouts, what editors can change and what stays locked.
- Build with modern toolingWe use the official WordPress scripts and create-block tooling, React in the editor and lean PHP and CSS on the front end.
- Editor testingYour editors try the blocks on staging, and we adjust labels, defaults and help text.
- Migration of existing contentWhere useful, we convert old shortcodes or classic content to the new blocks using scripts.
- Release and updatesVersioned releases, a changelog and checks against new WordPress versions.
Block themes, patterns and design tokens
Where the site uses a block theme, we put colours, spacing scales and typography into theme.json, so blocks, patterns and the editor share one source of truth.
On classic themes we provide equivalent styles through the plugin and keep them overridable.
A good set gives editors a service page, a landing page and an article layout that are already on brand, with locked structure where needed.
Scope and pricing factors
A block library is quoted after we see the designs and content. Typical drivers:
Block count and complexity
A simple styled box differs greatly from an interactive filterable list.
Dynamic data
External APIs or complex queries need caching and error handling.
Theme coupling
Building for a block theme, a classic theme or independent of theme changes the approach.
Content migration
Converting years of old content to blocks can be a project of its own.
Editor training
Teams with high turnover benefit from fuller documentation and video guides.
Compatibility needs
Support for multilingual plugins, ACF or WooCommerce adds testing.
Cases where blocks are the wrong choice
In that case, see our Elementor addon development.
If you need a tool that works across many sites and platforms, such as a browser overlay, the right tool may be a Chrome extension.
And if the need is a small change to how an existing plugin works, our plugin customization services are cheaper than new blocks.
WordPress releases editor changes often, and blocks need testing after major updates. Keep the set small and purposeful rather than building dozens of near-duplicates.
Proof by method: editor experience you can test
We record short sessions, note where they hesitate and fix those points.
On the technical side, we validate markup, check accessibility with automated and manual tests, and measure the page weight added by block assets. Because blocks load assets only when used, pages without them stay lean.
Related platform work, including WordPress website development and WordPress speed optimization, can run alongside the block project.
Our post on plugin security explains the escaping and capability checks we apply, and the overview on plugin development services shows the wider team.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Are Gutenberg blocks better than shortcodes?
For most editors, yes. Blocks show a visual preview, expose clear controls and validate input, while shortcodes require remembering syntax. Shortcodes still work, and we can convert them to blocks for you.
Do custom blocks work with any theme?
Mostly, but styling depends on the theme. We either style blocks independently or tie them to theme.json for block themes. We confirm the approach before building.
Will blocks slow down my site?
Not if they are built well. Assets load only on pages that use the block, and output is plain semantic markup. We measure page weight before and after.
What happens if WordPress changes the editor?
WordPress evolves steadily and most changes are backward compatible. Blocks should be tested on staging after major releases, which we can include in a maintenance plan.
Can you build blocks for WooCommerce?
Yes. We can build product highlights, custom checkout elements and store content blocks, subject to the extension points available in the WooCommerce version you run.
Do you provide training for editors?
Yes. A short recorded walkthrough and a one-page guide per block are standard, and live sessions are available if your team prefers.
