Shopify payment gateway integration that lets customers actually pay

We connect and, where needed, build the payment methods your Shopify store needs: card gateways, mobile wallets, bank transfer and cash on delivery flows, plus custom gateway apps for markets that Shopify's built-in options do not cover. It suits merchants selling from or into Pakistan, the Gulf, the UK and the US.

The payment problem on Shopify

Shopify's own payment product is not available in every country, and the list changes over time, so always check current availability for your business location. Merchants in Pakistan in particular tend to find that the simplest route is not open to them, and that leaves a choice between third-party gateways, manual payment methods and a payout structure through a company registered elsewhere.

Each route has trade-offs. Third-party gateways usually work through an app or a built-in connector and may attract additional transaction fees from Shopify on top of the gateway's own charges, so confirm the current terms before you commit. Manual methods such as bank transfer and cash on delivery cost nothing in fees but create order-handling work and refusal risk. A custom connector can fit a local gateway exactly, but you carry the maintenance.

Our job is to lay these options side by side for your situation, build the one you pick and test it properly. Our blog post on accepting payments on Shopify in Pakistan gives the wider background.

Deliverables for a payment integration

The list below changes with the method, but this is the usual shape.

  • Gateway recommendationA short written comparison for your country, currency, volume and risk level, with the reasons for the pick.
  • Account and compliance guidanceWhat the provider will ask for during onboarding. We do not give legal or tax advice, and we point you to your accountant for that.
  • Store configurationGateway settings, currencies, payment capture mode, order status rules and checkout payment order.
  • Cash on delivery and manual flowsOrder tagging, confirmation messages, fraud screens and courier hand-off so COD does not become a spreadsheet.
  • Custom gateway appWhere no connector exists, a built payment app or redirect integration with signed callbacks and retry handling. This links to our Shopify app development work.
  • Failure and refund handlingDeclined cards, abandoned redirects, duplicate callbacks and refunds, all tested before launch.
  • Test orders and documentationA test matrix covering each path, plus notes your team can use for support and reconciliation.

A payment project in six steps

Payments are the one part of the store where mistakes cost real money, so the steps are strict.

  1. RequirementsWe confirm your business registration country, payout currency, expected volume and the payment habits of your customers.
  2. Provider shortlistingWe compare two or three realistic gateways for fit, fees you will pay, settlement terms and API quality.
  3. Sandbox buildIntegration is done against the provider's test environment, never against live money.
  4. Test matrixSuccessful payment, decline, timeout, cancel, refund, partial refund, duplicate webhook and currency conversion are all exercised.
  5. Soft launchLive mode with a small set of real orders under supervision, checked against both Shopify and the provider dashboard.
  6. Reconciliation set-upA simple process, or a report, that matches provider payouts to Shopify orders each week.

Price drivers in a payment project

We price after we know which methods you need. These are the main factors.

Number of methods

Each additional gateway or wallet adds setup and a full test cycle.

Custom versus ready-made

A configured app is quick. A custom connector needs development, security review and ongoing upkeep.

Currencies and markets

Multi-currency stores need conversion, rounding and tax display testing.

Order volume

High-volume stores need stricter retry, queue and monitoring design.

Fraud and COD controls

Screening rules, phone verification and tagging add configuration.

Back-office reconciliation

Matching settlements to orders can need reporting work or an accounting integration.

Cases where a custom gateway is the wrong idea

Do not build a connector to save a small fee.

Custom payment code is sensitive, needs careful security work and must follow the provider's changes. If a maintained app already supports your gateway, use it.

We also decline projects that ask us to handle raw card numbers on your own server.

Card data should go straight to a certified provider through a hosted or tokenised flow.

Likewise, if the real issue is a high COD refusal rate, adding more payment options will not solve it on its own.

Phone confirmation, clearer delivery information and better courier selection usually matter more.

Our post on custom payment gateway plugins for Pakistani stores explains where custom work makes sense.

There is also a compliance angle we raise early.

Payment providers verify the business, and the entity that receives the money must match what the provider approved.

We cannot decide that for you, and we will not help set up arrangements that misstate who the seller is.

If your structure is unclear, speak to your accountant or lawyer before building anything.

A closer look at cash on delivery

For many Pakistani stores COD is not a fallback, it is the main payment method.

It builds trust with first-time buyers, yet it brings refusals, wasted shipping and cash that arrives days after the sale.

Good COD handling on Shopify means more than switching the method on.

We set up order tagging so COD orders are separated from paid ones, add a confirmation step by phone or WhatsApp before dispatch where it makes sense, and connect order status to the courier's tracking so your team is not copying consignment numbers by hand.

Some merchants offer a small incentive for prepayment, which can reduce refusals, and we can build that into checkout.

The point is to make COD cheaper to run, not to hide it.

Reporting, proof and who we work with

We prove an integration by evidence: the completed test matrix, screenshots from the provider dashboard matched to Shopify orders, and a record of the first live transactions.

Afterwards we recommend a weekly reconciliation so mismatches are caught while they are still small.

From Gulberg III in Lahore we serve merchants in Pakistan, the UK, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and North America, with working-hour overlap for calls and USD invoicing for international clients.

Payment work often runs alongside Shopify Plus development for checkout changes, or a store migration when a platform move is the trigger.

After launch, a faster checkout helps too, so see Shopify speed optimization.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Can I accept card payments on Shopify from Pakistan?

It depends on current gateway support and on how your business is registered. Options change, so check each provider's eligibility before you commit. We review your situation and set up whichever route is available, whether that is a local gateway, an international one through an eligible entity or manual methods.

Is cash on delivery supported?

Yes, Shopify supports manual payment methods including cash on delivery. We add order tagging, confirmation steps and courier hand-off so COD orders do not drain your team's time. Check current settings for your region.

Will Shopify charge extra on third-party gateways?

It can charge additional transaction fees when you use a gateway other than its own payment product. Terms vary by plan and region, so confirm them directly with Shopify before choosing a provider.

Can you integrate a local gateway that has no Shopify app?

Often yes, through a custom payment app or redirect flow, depending on what the gateway's API allows and what Shopify's current rules permit for that setup. We assess feasibility first.

How do you keep payments secure?

Card details never touch your server. We use hosted or tokenised flows, verify signatures on callbacks, store secrets outside the code and log every transaction event. Your provider's own compliance requirements still apply.

Do you also fix checkout speed and layout?

We can. Checkout changes depend on your plan, since deeper customisation is tied to Plus. For small stores we work within the standard settings and polish the surrounding pages.
