App backend & API development that keeps your mobile app fast, secure and upgradeable
Our app backend & api development covers the server side of mobile apps: APIs, databases, authentication, push notifications, payments, admin panels and hosting. It suits teams whose app needs a reliable data layer, and those whose existing backend is slow, undocumented or unsafe to extend.
By Junaid Tariq · Reviewed October 2026
- Documented REST APIs that web and mobile clients can share
- Authentication, rate limiting and logging included from the first release
- Admin panel so your team runs the app without calling a developer
The part of the app users never see
An app's screens get the attention, but its backend decides whether orders save, notifications arrive, accounts stay safe and the app still works when ten thousand people open it after an advertisement. A backend that was thrown together to meet a launch date becomes the main cause of bugs, outages and delayed features.
We build backends the way we build web platforms for 500+ clients: clear data models, tested endpoints, versioned APIs, background queues and written documentation. Our main frameworks are Laravel and Node, with ASP.NET and others when a client's team uses them. For the Laravel route, see Laravel API development and the explanation in building a SaaS with Laravel.
The most important rule is simple: the mobile app should be a thin client. Business rules, prices, permissions and validation live on the server, where you can change them without waiting for every user to update from the store.
Situations we handle
Typical starting points for backend work.
New app, no server
We design the data model, API and admin tools together with the app, so features do not wait for each other.
Web platform that needs an app
We expose your existing data safely through an API without breaking the website. See API development and integration.
Slow or unstable API
Profiling, indexing, caching and queueing to remove timeouts and keep peak traffic from stalling the app.
Security worries
Review of authentication, token handling, permissions and data exposure, followed by prioritised fixes.
Third-party integrations
Payments, maps, SMS, WhatsApp Business, accounting and shipping, wired into one coherent service.
Scaling for growth
Move from a single server to managed databases, queues and autoscaling when real load justifies it.
Why trust this team with your build
For App Backend & API Development, projects live or die on maintainability. Here is what stands behind the delivery.
Hands-on experience
500+ websites and web applications delivered over 18+ years for clients in 48 countries, the experience behind your App Backend & API Development project.
Certified expertise
For App Backend & API Development, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.
Recognised work
Led by Junaid Tariq, a National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing who also builds WordPress plugins, CRMs and web applications. See the about page.
Transparent by default
A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.
Backend deliverables
The items below form the core of an app backend engagement.
- Data model and architectureEntity design, API structure, environment plan and decisions recorded in writing.
- REST APIVersioned endpoints, consistent errors, pagination and filtering, with OpenAPI or Postman documentation.
- Authentication and rolesEmail, phone or social sign-in, token lifecycle, refresh, device sessions and role permissions.
- Real-time and notificationsPush via Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service, plus WebSocket features where needed.
- Background jobsQueues for emails, receipts, exports and reconciliation so users never wait on slow tasks.
- Admin panelDashboards, user and content management, exports and audit logs, often built with the tools in Laravel admin panel development.
- Automated tests and CITests for critical endpoints and a pipeline that builds and deploys repeatably.
- Monitoring and backupsError tracking, uptime alerts, log retention and tested database restores.

API versioning and the problem of old app builds
Apps cannot. Some users stay on a version for months, so your backend must serve old and new builds at the same time.
We version APIs, avoid breaking changes in existing responses, and build a force-update mechanism for the day an old version has to be retired, for example after a security fix.
They let you switch behaviour on the server, test a new flow with a small group, and turn it off quickly if it goes wrong. For a product that depends on store review times, that control is valuable.
We write these rules down in the API documentation, so the next developer, whether ours or yours, knows which fields are safe to change.
Build order that avoids rework
Backend and app work run in parallel, joined by an agreed API contract.
- Requirements and API contractWrite down every screen's data needs, then agree endpoints and response shapes before coding.
- Data and security designChoose the database structure, authentication model and permission rules.
- Mock server firstFrontend developers start against a simulated API, so mobile work is not blocked.
- Real endpoints and testsReplace mocks with tested services in short increments, reviewed on a staging server.
- Load and security testingCheck limits, injection risks, rate limiting and behaviour under concurrent use.
- Production releaseControlled deployment, monitoring on, rollback plan ready and documentation delivered.
Options for the server side
The right choice depends on your team, timeline and the product.
Option | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Laravel API | Fast, structured development and a large ecosystem | Needs PHP hosting skills in your team |
Node.js API | Strong for real-time and JavaScript teams | More decisions left to the developer |
ASP.NET Core | Strong for enterprise environments, see ASP.NET Web API development | Different hosting and talent profile |
Firebase or Supabase | Quick start for small apps | Vendor dependency and cost growth at scale |
Custom microservices | Independent scaling | Operational overhead; rarely right for a first release |
Security and data protection basics
Secrets stay off the device. Passwords are hashed with current algorithms, and tokens expire and rotate.
We keep sensitive values out of logs, restrict access to production databases, and take backups that we actually test by restoring them.
If you serve users in the UK, EU or other regulated regions, talk to a legal adviser about consent, retention and deletion. We design endpoints for export and deletion requests so you are able to comply.
Variables behind scope and cost
A fixed rate card would hide these. We list them in the proposal.
Number of entities and rules
A directory app and a multi-vendor marketplace differ widely in business logic.
Real-time requirements
Live tracking and chat need different infrastructure from a simple catalogue.
Integrations
Each external API means reading documentation, testing sandboxes and handling their failures.
Hosting and uptime
Managed cloud with backups and monitoring costs more than a single shared server, and is usually worth it.
Documentation level
Public developer APIs need more documentation and versioning than a private one.
Migration
Moving data from an old system takes careful mapping and rehearsals.
Poor-fit cases and the evidence we show
We do not publish speed or uptime figures that we cannot back with your own monitoring. You will see those numbers yourself.
After launch, app maintenance and support keeps dependencies patched and the server healthy, and the Android and iOS apps stay in step with API versions.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Do I need a custom backend or can I use Firebase?
Firebase and similar services suit small apps with simple data needs and a fast start. A custom backend is better when you have complex business rules, reporting, many integrations or want to control costs and data location. We recommend based on your product.
Can you build an API for my existing website or software?
Yes. We add a secure API layer to your existing system, documenting each endpoint, without rewriting what already works. First we review the code and database for risks.
Which language and framework do you use?
Mostly Laravel (PHP) and Node.js, with ASP.NET Core when it suits the client. We choose for maintainability and the skills your future team will have, not for fashion.
How do you handle scaling?
By measuring first. We add caching, database indexing and queues before moving to larger infrastructure, and design stateless services so adding servers is possible when the load needs it.
Will we get the documentation and source code?
Yes. You receive the repository, API documentation, environment setup guide and deployment notes. Hosting and third-party accounts should be in your name.
Can you host and monitor it for us?
Yes, we can set up and manage cloud hosting, backups and alerts, or work with your hosting provider. Contact us with your current setup and we will advise.
