Laravel API development that other systems can depend on
We build REST APIs on Laravel that power mobile apps, JavaScript front ends and partner integrations. It suits teams that need a stable, documented backend with proper authentication, versioning and error handling.

- Token or OAuth authentication with rate limits and clear error responses
- Versioned endpoints so app updates never break older clients
A backend contract, not just a set of URLs
An API is a promise. Once a mobile app is in the store or a partner has wired your endpoints into their system, you cannot change a response shape on a whim.
Most API pain comes from teams discovering this after launch: fields renamed overnight, inconsistent error formats, endpoints that return everything to everyone.
Good Laravel API development starts by designing the contract before the code: which resources exist, what each role may read or change, how errors are reported, how lists are paged and how future changes will be introduced without breaking existing consumers. Laravel supplies strong tooling for this, including API resources for shaping responses, form requests for validation, policies for authorisation and Sanctum or Passport for authentication.
We write the contract as an OpenAPI description first where the project is large enough to justify it, so your mobile and web developers can work in parallel instead of waiting for the backend. If you are also commissioning the apps, our app backend and API development team works from the same contract.
Typical API projects
The work usually falls into one of these shapes.
Backend for a mobile app
Login, profiles, content, orders and push notification triggers for an iOS, Android or Flutter app. Pairs with React Native app development or native builds.
API for a single-page front end
A Vue or React interface talks to Laravel over JSON. Suited to products with heavy interaction and a dedicated front-end team.
Partner and customer integrations
A controlled, key-based API that lets distributors, couriers or software vendors push and pull your data safely.
Wrapping a legacy system
An older database or application gets a modern API layer in front of it, so new apps can use it without rewriting everything.
Webhook receivers and senders
Endpoints that accept events from payment, shipping or messaging providers, and events your system sends outward.
Splitting a monolith
Pulling one slow or shared function, such as pricing or search, into a service with its own interface.
Why trust this team with your build
For Laravel API Development, projects live or die on maintainability. Here is what stands behind the delivery.
Hands-on experience
500+ websites and web applications delivered over 18+ years for clients in 48 countries, the experience behind your Laravel API Development project.
Certified expertise
For Laravel API Development, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.
Recognised work

Transparent by default
A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.
Components of a finished API
Every project is scoped separately, but you should expect these items.
- Resource and endpoint designNaming, nesting, filtering, sorting and pagination agreed up front and applied consistently.
- Authentication and authorisationSanctum tokens, OAuth through Passport or key-based access, with policies deciding who can do what.
- Validation and error formatOne predictable error structure with useful messages, so front ends can show problems clearly.
- Versioning strategyA route or header scheme that lets you ship version two without stranding apps already installed.
- Rate limiting and abuse controlsThrottling per user or key, plus logging of unusual patterns.
- Interactive documentationGenerated docs with example requests and responses, kept in step with the code.
- Automated testsFeature tests for each endpoint covering success, failure and permission cases.
- Monitoring hooksRequest logging, exception tracking and a health endpoint for uptime checks.

Performance and reliability under real clients
An app on a patchy connection retries requests, sends duplicates and times out halfway through a checkout.
We design write endpoints to be safe to repeat, using idempotency keys on anything that creates an order or a payment record, and we return enough information for the app to recover without guessing.
We eager-load relationships to avoid the classic one-query-per-row trap, add indexes where the query plan shows a need, cache responses that change rarely and push heavy work into queues.
If an existing API is already slow, the review described under Laravel performance optimization applies directly.
Returning forty fields when the screen needs five wastes mobile data for users who pay for it. We shape responses per screen need, support field selection where it is useful and compress responses on the server.
Working method for API delivery
Short cycles and early documentation keep consumers of the API unblocked.
- Consumer and data reviewWe list who will call the API, from what kind of client, and what data they need. This prevents building endpoints nobody uses.
- Contract designResources, fields, errors and auth flows are written up and reviewed with your front-end or partner developers.
- Build and test endpointsEndpoints are delivered in groups with tests, running on a staging server your team can call from day one.
- Security and load reviewWe check access rules, input handling and the slowest queries before real traffic arrives.
- Release and monitoringProduction deployment with logging in place, then a watch period to catch client behaviour we did not expect.
- Ongoing versioningAs needs change, new versions are added alongside the old, with deprecation notices to consumers.
Mistakes we are often asked to repair
If you recognise your current API here, a review before the next release saves pain.
No version in the URL or header
Any change risks breaking apps already installed on customer phones.
Authorisation only in the app
The app hides a button but the endpoint still answers anyone who guesses it. Checks must live on the server.
Inconsistent error shapes
One endpoint returns a message string, another an array. Front-end code fills with special cases.
Everything returned, always
Large payloads leak fields users should not see and slow every screen.
No tests on permissions
A new role or field quietly opens data it should not. Tests catch this on the next commit.
Secrets in the repository
Keys committed to Git are exposed forever. We move them to environment configuration and rotate them.
Choosing an authentication approach
There is no universal answer. This is how we usually frame the decision.
Situation | Common choice | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
First-party mobile app or SPA | Sanctum personal or SPA tokens | Token storage on the device and expiry policy |
Third parties acting for your users | OAuth 2 through Passport | Scope design and consent screens |
Server to server partner access | API keys with scoped permissions | Key rotation and IP controls |
Inbound provider events | Signed webhooks | Verifying signatures and handling retries twice |
Internal services | Short-lived signed tokens | Clock drift and secret management |
Quote drivers for API projects
Ten simple read endpoints are a small job. Three endpoints that apply pricing, stock and permission rules across several tables are not.
The factors we price are the number of resources, the depth of permission rules, external integrations, real-time requirements such as broadcasting, data volume, documentation depth and test coverage expected.
Wrapping a database nobody has documented means reading the schema, finding the quirks and agreeing what the API should hide.

Evidence of quality you can inspect
We do not publish invented benchmark numbers. You see these instead.
Evidence | Where you find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Passing test suite per release | CI report in the repository | Regressions are caught before you are |
Live documentation | A docs URL for your developers | Integrations proceed without a call |
Response time and error tracking | Monitoring dashboard after launch | Slow endpoints are found with data |
Change log by version | Release notes | Consumers know what changed and when |
Situations where a separate API is unnecessary
Laravel with Blade, Livewire or Inertia handles that case directly, and you can add endpoints later for the one feature that needs them.
The reasoning is laid out in our guide to Livewire, Inertia and API plus React or Vue.
We will say so in the first call.
If you want the broader context, the secure PHP API guide explains the security basics, and our API development and integration page covers non-Laravel stacks.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Do you build REST or GraphQL APIs?
REST is our default because it is simple to document, cache and consume. GraphQL is possible when many different clients need very different shapes of data, but it adds complexity, so we recommend it only when the case is clear.
How do you secure a Laravel API?
Authentication through Sanctum or Passport, policies on every resource, input validation, rate limiting and HTTPS only. We also review logging so sensitive data never lands in plain-text logs. Security is a process, so it continues after launch.
Can you document an API we already have?
Yes. We can read the existing code, generate an OpenAPI description and tidy inconsistent responses behind a new version, leaving the old one running while clients move across.
Will the API work with our mobile app developers?
That is the main use case. We give them a staging environment and live documentation early, and we are happy to work alongside your own app team or our web application developers.
How do you handle versioning?
We version in the route or header, keep old versions alive for an agreed period and publish notes on what changed. This protects installed mobile apps that users have not updated.
Who maintains the API after launch?
You can maintain it in house, or use our Laravel maintenance and support plan for updates, monitoring and fixes.
