Headless WordPress development for teams that want a fast front end and a familiar editor
We build headless WordPress sites, where WordPress stores and manages content while a separate front end, usually React or Next.js, displays it through an API. It suits products and publishers that need custom interfaces or very high performance, and have the budget to run two layers.

- Honest advice on whether headless is worth its extra cost for you
Separating the content from the display
In a traditional WordPress site the theme builds each page on the server using PHP. In a headless setup WordPress becomes only the content system.
Editors still write posts, manage media and fill fields in the dashboard, but visitors see a separate application that fetches that content through the REST API or WPGraphQL. The front end can be built in Next.js, Nuxt, Astro or a mobile app, and it can pull from other sources too.
The appeal is control. You can build interactions that a theme struggles with, serve the same content to a website and an app, and deploy the front end to a global edge network. The cost is that you now run two systems, and many things WordPress did for free, such as previews, menus, search, forms and SEO output, must be rebuilt on purpose.
We offer this service because some projects genuinely need it. We also talk plenty of clients out of it. Our 18+ years of building sites teaches one lesson clearly: the simplest architecture that meets the requirement is usually the cheapest to own.
Projects where headless pays off
Situations in which the added complexity is justified.
Web and mobile from one source
A single editorial system feeding a site, an app and perhaps a kiosk or partner feed.
Highly interactive interfaces
Product configurators, dashboards, calculators or search experiences that need app-like behaviour.
Large media and publishing sites
Heavy traffic served from static or cached pages, with editors left undisturbed.
Existing frameworks
A company that already has a React or Vue team and wants WordPress only as the content tool.
Strict performance targets
Where templates and plugins have been tuned as far as they go and the remaining limit is the PHP layer.
Why trust this team with your build
For Headless WordPress Development, projects live or die on maintainability. Here is what stands behind the delivery.
Hands-on experience
500+ websites and web applications delivered over 18+ years for clients in 48 countries, the experience behind your Headless WordPress Development project.
Certified expertise
For Headless WordPress Development, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.
Recognised work
Led by Junaid Tariq, a National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing who also builds WordPress plugins, CRMs and web applications. See the about page.
Transparent by default
A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.
The editor stays, the front end changes
In a headless project that depends on decisions made early.
If these are skipped, editors fall back on pasting content into whatever box seems to work, and the front end breaks in odd places.
Writers and marketers walk through the content they publish each month, and we shape the model around it.
This is also the point where we decide how pages are assembled: a flexible block approach for landing pages, strict fields for repeatable templates like products or events.
Security improves in one respect, since the public site does not run PHP or plugins, and gets harder in another, because the API and the build pipeline need their own protection.
Our practices follow the same principles as in our WordPress security checklist, adapted for two layers.

Deliverables of a headless build
Scope is agreed in writing. These are the usual parts.
- Content modelCustom post types, fields and taxonomies designed for API consumption, not only for a theme.
- API layerREST or WPGraphQL endpoints, authentication where needed and documented response shapes.
- Front-end applicationA React, Next.js or similar app with routing, components and a design system built from your design.
- Editorial previewDraft preview so editors see unpublished changes in the real front end, one of the most overlooked requirements.
- SEO outputTitles, meta, canonical tags, structured data, sitemaps and redirects reproduced in the front end and checked in Search Console.
- Forms and searchContact forms, search and other dynamic features rebuilt or connected to services.
- Hosting and deploymentBuild pipeline, caching rules and rebuild triggers when content changes.
Stages from fit check to launch
A staged plan reduces risk. Duration depends on content volume and interface complexity.
- Fit checkWe test your requirements against a traditional build and write down why headless is, or is not, justified.
- ArchitectureChoice of framework, API style, hosting and caching, plus a plan for previews and redirects.
- Content modellingFields and relationships are agreed with editors before any front-end work begins.
- Front-end buildComponents and pages are built against real API data, with performance budgets checked as we go.
- Editor testingYour team writes, previews and publishes real content, and we adjust anything awkward.
- Launch and monitoringCutover with redirects, monitoring of errors and rebuilds, and a review of search performance.
Headless compared with a traditional build
The same site, built two ways.
Factor | Traditional WordPress | Headless WordPress |
|---|---|---|
Front-end freedom | Limited by the theme | Almost unlimited |
Editor experience | Built-in preview and blocks | Preview must be built |
Plugin compatibility | Most plugins work as-is | Many front-end plugins do not apply |
Maintenance | One system | Two systems to keep updated |
Team skills needed | PHP and WordPress | JavaScript framework plus WordPress |
Typical cost | Lower | Higher to build and run |
Cost factors and when to avoid headless
Price depends on the number of templates and components, the complexity of previews, search and forms, any authentication or e-commerce functions, the hosting model and how much content must be moved.
We quote after the fit check, in USD for overseas clients.
Avoid headless if your site is mostly pages and posts, your team relies on plugins such as page builders, forms or SEO tools, or you have no developer to maintain a JavaScript application.
A well-built traditional site with attention to WordPress speed optimization is faster than most people expect.

Failure points we plan around
Headless projects fail in predictable places.
Forgetting previews
Editors who cannot see drafts quickly stop trusting the system.
Losing SEO fundamentals
Redirects, canonical tags and structured data vanish unless they are rebuilt deliberately.
Choosing it for fashion
Headless is a tool for specific problems, not a badge of modernity.
Neglecting security
An exposed API or leftover admin routes need locking down.
No ownership plan
Two layers need clear responsibility for updates and incident response.
Proof by method: showing it works
We measure the outcomes a front end can influence.
- Core Web VitalsField data and lab tests compared before and after for key templates.
- Indexation checksCrawls and Search Console reports confirm pages render and are indexed. Our broader WordPress website development standards apply.
- Editor task timingWe time common editorial tasks, such as publishing an article with images.
- Error monitoringBuild failures, API errors and rebuild times are logged and reported.
- Conversion trackingEvents in GA4 verified across routes, since client-side navigation can break tracking if left untested.
Working across time zones
We run weekly check-ins at times that overlap with your day, whether you are in London, Dubai or Toronto, and keep a shared staging link open so you always see the current state.
If your in-house developers will take over the front end afterwards, we write the code to your conventions and document the build, API endpoints and deployment steps, so the handover is a working session rather than a surprise.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
What is headless WordPress in simple terms?
WordPress manages the content and a separate application shows it to visitors by requesting it through an API. Editors keep the familiar dashboard, while developers build the public site with tools such as React or Next.js.
Is headless WordPress better for SEO?
Not automatically. It can be fast, but search engines still need proper rendering, titles, links and structured data. Done poorly, it is worse than a normal theme. We verify output with crawls and Search Console.
Which plugins still work?
Content-side plugins such as custom fields and many SEO fields work. Plugins that output front-end markup, like page builders and some form tools, usually do not. We list replacements before you commit.
Can we start with a normal site and go headless later?
Often yes, if the content model is clean. It is usually wiser to start simple. If your current site is aging, WordPress redesign services may deliver more value first.
Can headless work for membership or stores?
It can, with extra work because accounts and checkout must be handled in the front end. See membership and LMS websites and discuss requirements on our contact page.
Who maintains the two systems?
Either your team or ours. Updates, hosting and monitoring for both layers can be arranged under WordPress maintenance and support.
