PHP version upgrade & migration without breaking the application you depend on
Our PHP version upgrade & migration service moves applications from unsupported versions to current ones, fixing deprecated code, updating dependencies and testing on staging before cutover. It suits companies running older custom systems, WordPress sites or CMS installs that their host is about to retire.

- Compatibility scan before any code is touched
- Upgrades done on staging with a rollback path
- Dependencies, extensions and server settings updated together
Old PHP is a business risk, not just a technical one
PHP versions are supported for a limited time. Once a version reaches end of life, it stops receiving security fixes, and hosts, payment gateways and libraries gradually stop supporting it.
Many Pakistani businesses still run systems written years ago on PHP 5 or 7, often by a developer who has moved on. They work, so nobody touches them, until the host switches versions and the site shows a white screen.
Upgrading is not a matter of clicking a version selector. Functions have been removed, behaviour has changed, strict typing is stricter, and old libraries may not run on the new engine. The work is to find what will break, fix it in the right order and test the things that matter to the business, such as invoices, logins and payments.
This service suits owners of legacy custom applications, agencies that inherited client systems, and businesses whose hosting provider has announced a version change. Check the current supported-versions list on the official PHP site, since support dates change.
Scope of an upgrade project
Scope depends on the codebase, but these are the usual stages.
- Compatibility auditStatic analysis and test runs to list deprecated functions, removed extensions and syntax problems against the target version.
- Dependency reviewComposer packages, plugins and libraries checked for versions that support the new PHP, and replaced where abandoned.
- Code fixesUpdating removed features, null handling, type issues, string and array behaviour, and database driver differences.
- Server environmentExtensions, memory limits, OPcache and web server settings aligned with the new version.
- Database compatibilityCharacter sets, SQL modes and driver changes checked so data stays intact.
- Staging and regression testsBusiness-critical flows tested end to end before anything touches production.
- Cutover planScheduled window, backups and rollback steps agreed in writing.
- DocumentationA record of changes and remaining technical debt.

Transparent by default
A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.
A staged upgrade path
We rarely jump straight to the newest version when the code is old. Steps keep risk visible.
- InventoryWe catalogue the application, its framework, plugins, cron jobs and server, and agree the target version.
- Scan and estimateAutomated tools produce a list of issues, which we sort into blockers, warnings and cosmetic items.
- Staging buildA copy of the application and data runs on the new PHP version under a test address.
- Fix and retestBlockers are fixed first, then warnings. Business flows are retested after each round.
- Parallel runWhere stakes are high, staff test the upgraded copy with real tasks for a few days.
- Cutover and watchWe switch over in a quiet period and monitor error logs closely for the following days.

Typical trouble spots
Not every project meets all of these, but most meet several.
Area | What breaks | Usual remedy |
|---|---|---|
Removed database extensions | Old mysql_ functions stop working | Move to mysqli or PDO with prepared queries |
Abandoned libraries | Packages with no support for new PHP | Replace or fork carefully |
CMS plugins and themes | Add-ons fatal-error on new versions | Update, replace or rewrite the feature |
Strict typing changes | Warnings become errors | Add checks, fix null and type handling |
Server settings | Missing extensions, changed defaults | Configure PHP-FPM, extensions and limits |
Encoding | Character display issues | Standardise on UTF-8 with consistent connections |
Tools and methods
Automation finds issues. People decide what they mean.
PHP CodeSniffer and compatibility rules
Scans for syntax and function problems against the target version.
Static analysis
PHPStan or Psalm to find type and logic problems.
Rector
Automated refactoring for well-understood upgrade patterns, reviewed by hand.
Composer
Dependency resolution and version constraints.
Test suites
Existing tests where present, new smoke tests where not.
Error logging
Centralised logs to see problems after cutover.
Mistakes we see on DIY upgrades
Avoid these if you try it yourself.
Upgrading on the live server first
Errors hit customers immediately.
Ignoring warnings
Warnings today are fatal errors in the next version.
Forgetting cron jobs and CLI scripts
Background tasks break silently.
No rollback plan
Without one, a bad switch becomes an outage.
Variables that set the schedule
We quote after the compatibility scan.
Distance between versions
Moving from PHP 5 to a current version means more change than a minor step.
Code size and quality
Large, undocumented, procedural code takes longer to inspect than a clean modern codebase.
Test coverage
With no tests, we must create checks for critical paths first.
Framework age
Old framework versions may need upgrading in stages. Our Laravel upgrade and migration team handles that side.
Third-party dependencies
Each abandoned package adds replacement work.
Hosting migration
A server move alongside the upgrade increases coordination.
Example: the invoice system nobody dared touch
It works, but it needs an old PHP version, and the host wants to retire it. The original developer is unreachable, and there are no tests.
The safest route is to clone the system to staging, run it on the target version, record what fails and ask the accounts team to produce a week of invoices on the copy and compare them with the originals.
Systems better replaced than upgraded
If the application has no owner who understands it, depends on a library that no longer exists and keeps getting patched with workarounds, a rewrite or a move to a maintained platform can be cheaper over time.
Another option is a controlled interim state: running the old app in an isolated environment while its replacement is built.
If the application is a WordPress site, a smaller path may be enough, and our WordPress maintenance and support team can handle it.
The post on how to upgrade to PHP 8 safely describes the general approach you can follow yourself.
Proof by method: evidence the system still works
With you, we list the flows that cannot fail, such as logging in, creating an invoice, receiving a payment, exporting a report or sending an email, and we test each on staging before and after the upgrade.
Newer PHP versions generally run faster than older ones, which can improve response times, but the gain varies, so we measure rather than promise.
Once the application is stable, a PHP code audit and optimization can clear remaining debt, and legacy frameworks such as CodeIgniter 2 can be moved forward with our CodeIgniter development team.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Which PHP version should I upgrade to?
The newest version that your frameworks, plugins and libraries support and that is still receiving security support. We check the official support schedule at the time of the project.
Will my site go down during the upgrade?
The work is done on a staging copy, so the live site continues as normal. The final switch causes a short change window, which we plan for a quiet period.
My host is forcing a PHP upgrade. What should I do first?
Take a full backup, ask for the deadline and request a staging environment. Then have the code scanned for incompatibilities. We can do that quickly if you share access.
Can you upgrade a WordPress site's PHP version safely?
Yes. Plugins and themes are the usual cause of trouble, so we check each one, update or replace those that fail, and test forms, checkout and key pages.
Is it cheaper to rewrite than upgrade?
Sometimes, for very old or tangled code. For systems with sound structure, an upgrade is usually cheaper and less risky. The audit gives the evidence.
Do you provide ongoing support after the upgrade?
Yes. We can monitor logs, apply security patches and handle future version changes under a support arrangement.
