PHP API development that other systems can rely on

We design, build and document PHP API development projects: REST and JSON interfaces that let mobile apps, partner platforms and your own systems exchange data safely. It suits businesses that have data locked inside one application and need it available elsewhere.

An API is a contract, and contracts need care

The moment a mobile app, a courier system or a partner's software depends on your endpoints, you have made promises. Field names, response shapes, error messages and behaviour under load all become things other people have built on.

Change them carelessly and someone else's checkout stops working at midnight.

Our approach is to treat the interface as a product. We agree the resources and actions first, write the specification, then build and test against it. PHP is a practical language for this: modern versions are fast and typed, frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony handle routing, validation and authentication cleanly, and your existing PHP application can often expose its data without a rewrite.

Typical requests include an API for a new mobile app, a bridge between your website and an accounting or ERP system, a public API for resellers, and a clean layer on top of an old application so a new front end can replace the old one gradually.

Situations that call for an API

Situations we see most often.

Mobile apps

iOS and Android apps need one dependable back end for logins, data and push notifications.

Partner and reseller access

Give distributors controlled access to stock, prices or orders without sharing database credentials.

System-to-system sync

Orders, customers and stock moving between your shop, ERP, courier and accounting software.

Headless front ends

A React or Vue front end, or a headless WordPress setup, reading content and data over HTTP.

Webhooks and automation

Events from payments or messaging services trigger actions in your own system.

Legacy modernisation

Wrapping an old application in an API so new parts can be built beside it.

Trustworthiness

Transparent by default

A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.

Deliverables in a typical API project

Everything a developer on the other end needs, and everything you need to maintain it.

  • Endpoint specificationResources, methods, parameters, responses and error codes written in OpenAPI so tools can read it.
  • Authentication layerToken-based access with Sanctum, Passport, OAuth2 or JWT, chosen to match who calls the API.
  • Validation and error handlingConsistent, readable error responses and strict checks on every input.
  • Rate limiting and throttlingProtection against abuse and accidental loops from clients.
  • Pagination, filtering and sortingPredictable ways to retrieve large collections without slow queries.
  • Versioning strategyA URL or header scheme that lets old clients keep working while new ones move on.
  • Automated testsFeature tests for each endpoint, including failure and permission cases.
  • Documentation and sandboxReadable docs, example requests and a test environment partners can try safely.

Design choices we make with you

There is rarely one correct answer. Here is how we think about the main options.

Decision
Options
Our usual advice
Style
REST or GraphQL
REST for most business integrations; GraphQL when many client screens need flexible queries
Auth
API keys, OAuth2, token auth
Tokens for apps, OAuth2 for third parties, keys only for simple server-to-server cases
Format
JSON or XML
JSON, unless a partner system demands XML
Sync model
Polling or webhooks
Webhooks for events, polling as a fallback
Versioning
URL path or header
Path versions are easiest for partners to understand
Long jobs
Wait or queue
Queue and return a status, never hold a request open

Mistakes we are paid to fix

Most API trouble we inherit is self-inflicted.

Endpoints named after database tables rather than business actions, responses that change shape depending on the data, and errors that all return the same status code with a vague message.

Consumers end up writing defensive code around guesses.
Another frequent problem is the missing version.

An app team ships a change to a field name, the partner's integration silently fails, and nobody can say which release caused it. Versioning and a changelog are cheap at the start and painful to retrofit.

A third is performance by accident: a list endpoint that loads every related record, or a search with no index behind it.

It works with a hundred rows in testing and crawls with real data. We test with realistic volumes before consumers connect.

Finally, we see credentials passed in URLs, tokens that live forever and test keys left in production.

None of this is exotic, which is why a checklist-driven review catches most of it.

If your current interface shows any of these, our PHP code audit and optimization service is a sensible first step.

Build sequence

We work contract first, code second.

  1. Consumer interviewsWe speak with whoever will call the API: your app team, a partner developer, an internal analyst.
  2. SpecificationEndpoints and payloads are drafted in OpenAPI and reviewed with you and consumers before coding.
  3. Core buildModels, controllers, resources and authentication are developed with tests alongside.
  4. Security passWe check permissions per endpoint, mass assignment, injection risks and token handling.
  5. Sandbox and documentationA test environment and published docs let consumers integrate in parallel.
  6. Release and monitoringLogging, error alerts and usage tracking go live with the first consumer.

Security you can explain to an auditor

Most API breaches come from ordinary mistakes: an endpoint that returns another user's record when the ID is changed, a token that never expires, verbose errors that reveal the database.

We test for those directly by calling endpoints with accounts in different roles, with expired tokens and with malformed input.
We use HTTPS only, hash secrets, limit what each token may do, and log access to sensitive data.

Rate limits and clear error responses protect both sides.

For a fuller treatment of the approach, read our guide on how to build a secure PHP API.

Payment and personal data deserve extra care.

Check the current rules for your sector and country before storing anything sensitive, and tell us early if you operate under a specific regulation so we can design for it.

Factors behind API quotes

We quote from the specification. These are the factors that matter.

Number of endpoints

Count of resources and the actions allowed on each.

Business rules behind them

An endpoint that only reads data is cheap. One that triggers pricing or stock logic is not.

Consumers

Public APIs need stricter versioning, docs and support than a private one for your own app.

Third-party dependencies

Each outside service called from your API adds failure handling.

Existing code

Wrapping a tidy application is quicker than untangling a messy one first.

Support expectations

Partner-facing APIs usually need monitoring and a response process.

Cases that need no custom API

If a plugin or the platform's own API already exposes what you need, use it.

WooCommerce, Shopify and most accounting tools ship usable interfaces, and building another layer over them rarely adds value.

We also advise against an API when only one internal screen needs the data, because a plain database query inside the application is simpler.

If you are still weighing Laravel against other stacks for the work, see Laravel API development and the broader API development and integration service.

Building for Pakistani and overseas integrations

Local integrations have their own character.

Courier services, bank and wallet gateways and WhatsApp business providers each publish documentation of different quality, and some change without much notice.

We build an adapter layer around each, so that a provider change touches one file instead of the whole application, and we log every outbound call to make failures easy to diagnose.

For clients abroad we work with the usual ecosystem: Stripe, PayPal, Twilio, SendGrid or Mailgun, Google and Microsoft sign-in, and cloud storage.

Time zones are handled explicitly in the data model, because an order created at night in Karachi and read in New York should show the same moment to both.

Quality you can inspect

We do not quote invented speed or uptime figures.

Instead each API ships with an automated test suite you can run, a published specification you can compare against actual behaviour, and logs that show response times and errors in your own environment.

Before partners connect, we run a walkthrough using the documentation alone, as if we were an outside developer.

If we need to ask a question that the docs should have answered, the docs are rewritten.

For Pakistani businesses connecting to couriers, payment providers or WhatsApp business tools, we read the provider's current documentation at build time, because these interfaces change and we do not rely on memory.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is the difference between a REST API and GraphQL?

REST exposes fixed resources at set URLs and suits most integrations. GraphQL lets a client ask for exactly the fields it needs, which helps complex front ends. We recommend REST unless you have a clear reason for GraphQL.

Can you build an API on top of our existing PHP application?

Usually yes. We add a controlled layer that reuses existing models and rules, then test that it exposes only what it should. A review through PHP code audit and optimization may come first if the code is fragile.

How do you handle authentication?

It depends on who calls the API. Mobile apps typically use token auth, third parties often use OAuth2, and simple server calls may use scoped keys. We explain the trade-offs and pick the lightest option that is still safe.

Will you document the API?

Yes. Documentation is a deliverable, not an optional extra. You receive an OpenAPI specification and readable examples, and we can host an interactive reference.

Can the API support a mobile app you are not building?

Yes. We work with your app team directly, agree the contract first and provide a sandbox so they can build in parallel. Our PHP web application development team can add the admin side.

How do we start?

Send us a short description of what needs to talk to what. We will review it on a call, ask about volumes and security needs, and return a scoped plan. Reach us through the contact page.
