PHP vs Laravel: when to use which for your project

PHP vs Laravel, when to use which? PHP is the language; Laravel is a framework written in PHP, so the real choice is plain PHP or a framework. Use plain PHP for small scripts, simple sites and tight hosting limits. Use Laravel for applications with users, data, APIs, payments or a team, where structure, security tooling and maintainability pay back quickly.

Key takeaways
  • Laravel is PHP, so you are choosing structure, not a different language.
  • Plain PHP suits small, short-lived or very constrained projects.
  • Laravel suits anything with logins, a database, background jobs or several developers.
  • Hosting, team skills and the five-year plan matter more than benchmarks.

What you are really comparing

People often ask PHP versus Laravel as if they were rivals. They are not. PHP is the programming language that runs on the server. Laravel is a free framework built in PHP that supplies routing, database access, authentication, validation, queues and templating, so you do not rewrite them for every project. Choosing Laravel means choosing a set of conventions and a lot of ready-made, well-tested parts.

Choosing plain PHP means writing in the language directly, with or without a few Composer packages, and designing the structure yourself. For a ten-line form handler that is perfectly sensible. For an application that will grow, each developer invents their own structure, and the project ends up with a home-made framework that nobody else understands and nobody has audited.

Cases where plain PHP is the right answer

A single-purpose script, such as a webhook receiver, a cron job that tidies files or a small form that emails a result, does not need a framework. Neither does a short-lived campaign page with one dynamic element. Framework boot time and dependency maintenance are overhead you would carry for no benefit.

Plain PHP also fits constrained hosting. Some low-cost shared plans make it hard to run Composer or newer PHP versions, and a legacy system on such a plan may be best left in place and tidied. In that case the goal is safe maintenance, not rewrite, and our PHP code audit and optimization work is the usual start.

Finally, if the team is one developer who knows plain PHP well and the project will stay small, forcing a framework can slow delivery. Be honest about how big the thing will get. Projects described as small have a habit of growing.

Cases where Laravel pays for itself

The tipping point is usually the second feature that needs a user account. Once you need logins, roles, password resets, a database with relationships, validation, file uploads, email notifications and an admin area, Laravel supplies tested versions of each. That removes weeks of work and many security mistakes, such as hand-rolled password handling or unprotected forms.

It is also the sensible choice when an application will be extended for years. Migrations track database changes, automated tests are well supported and the folder structure is familiar to any Laravel developer you hire later. Our Laravel development services cover custom applications, SaaS products and internal tools built this way, including admin panels and dashboards.

For software firms and startups, the hiring pool matters too. Laravel developers are easy to find, so a project does not depend on one person's private design.

Questions that settle the choice

Answer these honestly before you commit.

Will users log in?

If yes, lean Laravel. Authentication done properly is more work than it looks.

Does it need an API or mobile app backend?

Laravel makes APIs, tokens and versioning straightforward. See API development and integration.

How many developers will touch it?

More than one favours shared conventions.

How long will it live?

A year or two of light use may not justify a framework. Five years of growth does.

What are the hosting limits?

Check Composer access, PHP version and queue workers before choosing.

Is there an existing codebase?

Rewriting working code is costly. Often modernise first, then migrate in pieces.

Why a CMS or a framework is a different question again

Much of what Pakistani businesses call a PHP project is actually a content website. For marketing sites, blogs and shops, WordPress or another PHP-based CMS is usually cheaper than writing code in either style. Our PHP CMS development and WordPress website development pages explain when that fits.

Laravel enters when the product itself is software: a booking system, a CRM, a logistics tool, a school portal or a marketplace with its own rules. A good test is whether the value of the project is in the content or in the behaviour. Behaviour belongs in a framework.

Laravel can also sit alongside WordPress, with Laravel running an application or API and WordPress handling marketing pages. This split is common for SaaS companies and keeps each tool doing what it does best.

Cost and timeline factors, without the guesswork

Neither approach has a fixed price, and anyone quoting one without seeing requirements is guessing. What moves the cost is the number of user roles, integrations, reports, screens, payment and courier connections, and how much existing data must be migrated. Laravel often costs more at the start than a quick plain PHP script and less over time for anything that keeps changing.

Timeline follows the same logic. A framework removes the foundation work, so the first working version of an application with logins and a dashboard arrives sooner than a hand-built equivalent. The saving shrinks when the project is tiny. Ask any vendor to break the estimate into discovery, build, testing and deployment, and to state what is excluded.

Mistakes we see in both directions

Plain PHP and Laravel each have their own ways of going wrong.

  • Building a home-made frameworkCopying code between projects and calling it a core library, with no tests or documentation.
  • Using Laravel for a three-page siteInstalling a full framework for static content adds maintenance with no gain.
  • Ignoring PHP version supportBoth need a supported PHP version. Our guide on upgrading to PHP 8 safely covers the move.
  • Skipping tests on money flowsPayments, invoices and stock levels deserve automated tests whatever the stack.
  • Choosing by benchmarkRaw speed differences rarely decide a business project. Query design and caching matter more.
  • Never comparing frameworksLaravel is common, not universal. See the CodeIgniter, Laravel and Symfony comparison.

Moving from plain PHP to Laravel without a big-bang rewrite

If you already run a plain PHP application, the usual instinct is to rewrite it all. That is the riskiest path. A safer route starts by putting the code under version control, adding tests around the parts that handle money or customer data, and upgrading to a supported PHP version. Then build new features in Laravel and route traffic to them, retiring old pages one by one.

This approach, often called the strangler pattern, keeps the business running while the codebase improves. It also lets you judge Laravel on your own project before committing the whole thing. It is slower to describe than a rewrite, but it has a far better record of finishing.

Considerations for Pakistani teams and clients

Local conditions shape the decision. Many Pakistani projects integrate with payment options such as cash on delivery workflows, bank transfers, mobile wallets and card gateways, plus courier and WhatsApp integrations. Laravel's queue and package ecosystem makes these integrations easier to organise, but check each provider's current documentation and API terms.

Hosting varies too. If your client insists on an older shared host, ask for a PHP upgrade or move the project to a proper cloud or VPS plan before building. Fighting hosting limits wastes more developer time than the hosting costs. International clients working with our Lahore team should expect hosting recommendations to be part of the planning conversation, since we work with clients in the USA, UK, UAE and beyond.

Junaid’s take, from experience

Junaid's take on PHP versus Laravel

In my experience, the decision becomes obvious once you write down what the software must do in year three. If the list has users, permissions, payments, reports and integrations, I would start in Laravel and not look back. The upfront cost is real, but the alternative is paying for a framework anyway, in the form of untested custom code.

If it is a small utility or a stable legacy system, I would keep it simple and spend the money on tidying and securing what exists. I would not rewrite working software just because a framework is fashionable.

When a client is unsure, I suggest a short discovery workshop before any code. Describe the project to us through our contact page, or look at how we scope work in MVP development for startups. You can read more in the wider PHP development services section.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Is Laravel faster than plain PHP?

Plain PHP has less overhead for trivial scripts. For real applications, performance depends on database queries, caching and hosting more than on the framework. Laravel offers caching and queue tools that help at scale.

Can I learn Laravel without knowing PHP?

You need working PHP first: variables, functions, classes and arrays. Laravel builds on object-oriented PHP, so learn the basics of the language, then the framework.

Is Laravel good for ecommerce?

It can be, especially for custom stores and marketplaces with unusual rules. For standard shops, a platform like WooCommerce or Shopify may be quicker. See Laravel ecommerce development for when custom is justified.

Can I move a plain PHP site to Laravel gradually?

Yes. A common approach places Laravel in front of the legacy code and moves features over one at a time, with tests around each piece.

Is plain PHP still professional?

Yes, when the project is small or constrained and the code is organised, tested where it matters and kept on a supported PHP version.
