WordPress security hardening that shrinks the attack surface and plans for recovery
We harden WordPress sites by tightening logins, permissions, plugins, server settings and backups, then adding monitoring so problems surface early. It suits business, clinic, school and store sites that cannot afford a defaced homepage or a leaked customer list.

- Tested backups with a restore drill, not just a backup plugin
- Clean-up and recovery support if the site is already compromised
Most breaches come through ordinary doors
WordPress itself is maintained by a large security team and is not inherently weak. Sites usually get compromised through the things around it: an outdated plugin with a known flaw, a nulled theme downloaded from a free site, a shared admin password, a forgotten staging copy or a hosting account with loose permissions.
Attackers scan the web for these automatically, so a small site in Lahore is found as easily as a large one in London.
Hardening means removing the easy openings and limiting the damage when something slips through. It is a set of decisions about who can log in, what can be written to the server, what runs in the background and how quickly you can restore a clean copy. None of it is exotic, but it has to be done together and kept up.
This service suits any business that takes enquiries, bookings or payments through WordPress, and especially sites that handle patient, student or customer data. If you have seen strange redirects, unknown admin users or spam pages in Google, our clean-up work is the first step, and hardening follows.
Areas we lock down
We start from your risk and configuration, not a generic checklist.
- Login protectionStrong password policy, two-factor authentication for admins, login attempt limits and removal of default usernames.
- User roles and accessAdmin rights reduced to people who need them, old accounts removed and agency access logged.
- Plugin and theme controlUnused items deleted, abandoned plugins replaced and a policy against pirated themes and plugins.
- File and server settingsFile permissions, disabling file editing in the dashboard, protecting configuration files and blocking script execution in upload folders.
- Web application firewallFirewall rules at the server, CDN or plugin level to filter known malicious requests.
- SSL and headersHTTPS enforced site-wide and sensible security headers added where compatible.
- Backups and restore testsOff-site backups on a schedule, with a restore drill so you know they work.
- Monitoring and alertsFile change detection, uptime checks and notifications for failed logins or new admins.

- Risk reportYou receive a short report ranking issues by seriousness, in plain language, with what we will change.
- Staging and backupWe take a full backup and apply changes on staging where the site is complex.
- Hardening changesLogins, permissions, server rules and firewall settings are applied and documented.
- TestingForms, checkout, logins and integrations are tested because tight security rules sometimes block legitimate features.
- Handover and monitoringYou get a recovery sheet with who to call, where backups live and what alerts mean.

Typical gaps and our response
This is a rough map of the problems we find most often.
Area | Typical gap | Hardening response |
|---|---|---|
Plugins | Outdated or abandoned add-ons | Update, replace or remove, then monitor |
Themes | Nulled or unsupported themes | Move to a licensed or custom theme |
Logins | Shared or weak admin passwords | Individual accounts and two-factor login |
Hosting | Shared accounts, old PHP versions | Isolated hosting, current supported PHP |
Backups | Stored on the same server | Off-site copies and restore tests |
Forms | Spam and injection through unvalidated fields | Validation, spam filtering, rate limits |
Habits that matter more than tools
Hardening fails when daily behaviour undermines it.
Unique passwords in a manager
Reused passwords turn one leaked account into a site takeover.
Removing departed staff
Old accounts linger for years if nobody owns the user list.
Updating on a schedule
Waiting for convenience leaves known flaws open.
Buying plugins from the source
Free copies of paid plugins often hide malicious code.
Tools and layers
Security works in layers, and no single plugin covers all of them.
Server-level controls
Permissions, PHP settings and firewall rules from the hosting side.
Security plugin
Scanning, login controls and alerts where the server cannot provide them.
CDN and firewall
Filtering traffic before it reaches your server.
Backup tool
Scheduled off-site backups with versioned restore points.
Uptime monitoring
Alerts when the site is down or returns unexpected content.
Search Console
Security issue reports and indexing signs of injected spam pages.
Variables behind a security quote
We quote after the scan. These points move the work most.
Current condition
A clean site needs hardening only. An infected one needs investigation and clean-up first.
Site size and plugin count
More plugins and custom code mean more to review.
Compliance expectations
Sites collecting health, payment or personal data may need stricter access and logging.
Hosting control
Server-level changes need access to your host or a move to a better one.
Ongoing care
One-off hardening differs from monthly patching and monitoring.
Customisation
Heavily modified themes and plugins need more testing after changes.
Preparing for the bad day
A typical incident starts quietly: a new admin user, a modified file, a spam page in Google results, a host suspending the account for malware.
Our recovery sheet lists who to call, how to put the site into maintenance mode, where clean backups live, which passwords and keys to rotate and how to request a review from Google if warnings appear.
For businesses that depend on enquiries, that preparation shortens downtime more than any plugin.
Honest limits and when not to buy this
What we can do is raise the cost of attacking you, shorten detection time and make recovery routine. If someone offers total protection for a one-time fee, be careful.
You may not need a paid hardening project if your site is small, uses few plugins, sits on decent hosting, has two-factor login and a tested backup.
Our free WordPress security checklist for business sites covers those basics.
For plugin-specific risks, the post on common plugin vulnerabilities and fixes is worth a read.
Regulated sectors should also read about rules for healthcare and regulated advertising, since data handling and promotion rules often overlap.
Proof by method: evidence you can keep
Most sites that need security work also need regular updates, which our WordPress maintenance and support plan covers, and sites changing host should look at WordPress migration services so the move does not open new gaps.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Is WordPress secure enough for a business website?
Yes, if it is maintained. Most successful attacks target outdated plugins, weak passwords and poor hosting, not the core software. The difference lies in how the site is configured and updated.
Is a security plugin enough?
A good plugin helps with scanning and login rules, but it cannot fix an insecure server, an abandoned theme or weak access habits. We combine plugin controls with server and process changes.
My site was hacked. Can you clean it?
Yes. We isolate the site, find injected code and backdoors, remove them, patch the entry point and reset credentials. Hardening follows so the same route does not reopen. Please contact us as soon as you notice the problem.
Will hardening slow my site?
Properly configured, not noticeably. Some firewall rules add a little overhead but are often offset by blocking junk traffic. We test after changes and balance with our WordPress speed optimization work.
How often should security be reviewed?
Updates and monitoring are continuous. A full review makes sense yearly or after major changes such as a redesign, a new payment tool or a host move.
Do I need this if I use a managed WordPress host?
Managed hosts handle server-level protection, which helps. Your plugins, user accounts, forms and content habits are still your responsibility, so a review is worthwhile.
