CakePHP development for admin-heavy systems and careful upgrades
We offer CakePHP development for new convention-driven applications and for rescuing, upgrading or extending older CakePHP projects. It suits businesses with record-heavy systems such as inventory, memberships and back offices, and owners of CakePHP 2 or 3 code that has aged.

- Convention-first code that stays easy for the next developer
- Tests added around fragile areas before anything is changed
Strengths that keep CakePHP relevant
CakePHP is one of the older PHP frameworks and it has aged better than its reputation suggests. Its core idea is convention over configuration: name your tables and classes in the expected way and the framework gives you routing, forms, validation and scaffolding with little code.
For systems that are mostly lists, forms and reports, that is quick and tidy.
It is not the fashionable choice, and we will not pretend otherwise. Fewer developers advertise CakePHP skills today than Laravel skills. But thousands of business applications run on it, and many owners face the same question: keep it, upgrade it or replace it. We help answer that with evidence from the code, not with a sales preference.
If you are comparing frameworks for a fresh start, read our PHP versus Laravel guide. If you already own a CakePHP application, keep reading.
Work we take on
Both new and inherited projects.
New admin-driven applications
Inventory, membership, billing and scheduling systems where most screens are structured data entry.
Version upgrades
Moving CakePHP 2 or 3 applications to a supported release in managed steps.
Feature work on old code
Adding reports, roles or integrations without destabilising a working system.
Performance rescue
Slow pages traced to missing indexes, heavy ORM calls or unbounded queries.
Security remediation
Closing known gaps such as weak password storage, unvalidated input and outdated libraries.
Migration planning
Honest assessment of whether to stay on CakePHP or move toward Laravel migration.
Why trust this team with your build
For CakePHP Development, projects live or die on maintainability. Here is what stands behind the delivery.
Hands-on experience
500+ websites and web applications delivered over 18+ years for clients in 48 countries, the experience behind your CakePHP Development project.
Certified expertise
For CakePHP Development, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.
Recognised work
Led by Junaid Tariq, a National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing who also builds WordPress plugins, CRMs and web applications. See the about page.
Transparent by default
A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.
Project outputs
Output depends on whether the project is new or inherited.
- Application auditVersion, dependencies, security posture, test coverage and database health, summarised in a plain report.
- Upgrade roadmapA staged plan with risks, ordering and rollback points.
- Bake-generated and custom codeScaffolding where it helps, hand-written logic where rules are unusual.
- ORM and database workAssociations, finders and indexes reviewed for speed and clarity.
- Authentication and authorisationCurrent plugins configured for roles and permissions.
- Automated testsPHPUnit tests for the paths you cannot afford to break.
- DocumentationSetup, deployment and architecture notes for the next developer.

Inside a typical CakePHP rescue
Rescue projects tend to start with a phone call that sounds the same: the developer left, the site is slow, something broke after a hosting change, and nobody knows how the invoices module works.
We begin by getting the application running locally from a clean copy, because a system you cannot run is a system you cannot safely change.
We look at how models are associated, whether business rules live in models or are copied across controllers, how uploads and sessions are handled, and which parts of the database have no keys or indexes.
When it fights them, that is usually where the bugs live.
Security holes first, then anything that threatens data, then slowness, then tidy-ups. You decide how far to go, and the first phase is usually small enough to fund without a long approval process.
That is routine for us, and we treat it without judgement. What matters is the next step.
Upgrade path for older CakePHP applications
The sequence we follow when a project predates the current major release.
- Freeze and back upCode, database and uploads are copied and a working local copy is built.
- Characterise behaviourWe write tests that capture what the system does now, including its quirks.
- Raise PHP and dependenciesThe PHP version and libraries are updated in steps, resolving deprecations.
- Upgrade framework versionWe follow the official migration guides and the upgrade tooling, one major version at a time.
- Refactor risky areasRaw queries, global state and duplicated rules are cleaned up behind the tests.
- Release and monitorA staged deployment with error logging and a rollback plan.
Technology we work with
The stack around a CakePHP project.
Area | Tools | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Framework | CakePHP 4 and 5, plus maintenance of 2.x and 3.x | New builds and upgrades |
Database | MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL | Data storage and reporting |
Auth | Authentication and Authorization plugins | Logins and permissions |
Quality | PHPUnit, PHPStan, PHP_CodeSniffer | Tests and standards |
Front end | CakePHP templates with Bootstrap or Vue | Responsive screens |
Tooling | Composer, Git, CI pipelines | Repeatable builds |
Stay, upgrade or replace
An application that works, has modest traffic and a sound database may only need a PHP version bump and a security review.
One built on a framework version that no longer receives fixes, with no tests and tangled controllers, may cost more to repair than to rebuild.
We make the call on four things: security exposure, how often the system must change, how well the business rules are understood and how many people can maintain it.
Our write-up on signs your PHP code needs an audit explains the warning signs, and for projects moving to a newer language version, upgrading to PHP 8 safely covers the common traps.
CodeIgniter, Yii and Symfony each suit different team profiles, and we do not push CakePHP where it does not fit.
Working arrangements
For clients in Lahore and other Pakistani cities we can meet at our Gulberg III office by arrangement, and handle most communication by phone and WhatsApp.
Payment for international clients is in USD.
Before we touch your server we agree on access: a staging copy, read-only database access where possible, and a signed NDA if you want one.
Scope and quote factors
Quoted after a short audit.
Current version
The distance from today's release decides how many upgrade steps are needed.
Test coverage
With none, we write tests first, which adds time and removes risk.
Custom plugins
Abandoned third-party plugins may need replacement.
Database state
Missing keys and inconsistent data slow upgrades.
Downtime tolerance
Zero-downtime releases need extra preparation.
Feature wishlist
New functionality alongside an upgrade is often best phased.
Cases we would not recommend
If your team will hire from a market where Laravel or Symfony skills dominate, choose accordingly.
For public websites focused on content, a CMS approach fits better, and for products that need a long-lived ecosystem of packages, Laravel usually has more to offer.
Replacing a system that works is a business decision, not a technical one.
Evidence behind an upgrade
That is why we write characterisation tests first and run them at every step.
We work from Gulberg III in Lahore with remote clients in the USA, UK and UAE, billing in USD, and with Pakistani businesses by call, WhatsApp and in-person meeting by arrangement. To discuss a CakePHP application, use our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Is CakePHP still supported?
Yes. The project releases maintained major versions with security updates, but older versions such as 2.x and 3.x have reached the end of their support. Check the official release schedule for the current status of your version.
Can you upgrade a CakePHP 2 application?
Yes, in stages. We usually move through successive major versions while adding tests, because a single leap tends to break many things at once.
Should we move from CakePHP to Laravel?
Only if there is a reason: hiring, ecosystem or a major rewrite already planned. A well-kept CakePHP application can serve for years.
Can you add features without rewriting?
Yes. We add features inside the existing structure, adding tests around the area first, and flag any technical debt that makes a change unsafe.
How is a CakePHP project priced?
We quote after a code review, based on version distance, test coverage, integrations and the features required. Our PHP and MySQL database development team can handle database clean-up in parallel.
Do you work with CakePHP and WordPress together?
Occasionally, for example when a CakePHP back office feeds a WordPress front end through an API. We keep the boundary clean so each system can be updated on its own schedule.
