ASP.NET Web API development that connects your apps and partners safely

We design, build and document ASP.NET Web API development projects: the secure back-end endpoints behind mobile apps, single-page front ends, SaaS products and partner integrations. It suits teams that need a dependable data layer other software can call, without exposing more than it should.

The API is the product's spine

A web API is the layer that other software talks to. A mobile app asks it for a customer's orders.

A React front end posts a form to it. A courier or payment partner sends it a status update. If that layer is slow, inconsistent or leaky, every product built on top of it inherits the problem, and fixing it later means changing every client at once.

ASP.NET Core is a strong fit for this work. It handles high request volumes efficiently, supports JSON and other formats cleanly, integrates with standard authentication schemes and works with OpenAPI documentation tools. We build APIs that are boring in the best way: predictable URLs, consistent responses, honest status codes and errors a developer can act on.

Typical clients are product teams building a mobile or SaaS app, businesses connecting their own systems, and agencies that need a reliable back end behind a design they have already sold. If you are weighing platforms first, our comparison of ASP.NET Core, Laravel and Node lays out the trade-offs.

Deliverables for an API project

What the handover contains when an ASP.NET Web API development engagement is complete.

  • API contractResources, methods, request and response shapes agreed and written as an OpenAPI specification before coding starts.
  • Authentication and authorisationJWT or OAuth 2.0 flows, API keys for partners where suitable, and role or policy checks on every protected endpoint.
  • Validation and error handlingConsistent problem responses, field-level validation messages and logging that links an error to the request that caused it.
  • Versioning strategyA route or header approach so existing apps keep working when the API changes.
  • Rate limiting and throttlingLimits per client or key to protect the service from abuse and runaway scripts.
  • Data access layerEfficient queries through Entity Framework Core or Dapper, aligned with our SQL Server database development.
  • Interactive documentationA Swagger UI page and a sample collection for Postman, so integrators can test without calling you.
  • Automated testsIntegration tests that call real endpoints against a test database, covering the paths that move money or data.

Design rules we hold to

Good APIs are consistent.

Resource names are nouns, plural and predictable. Lists are paged and filterable the same way everywhere. Dates travel in one format.

Errors share one shape, with a stable code a client can switch on and a message a person can read.

These rules look small and save weeks of integration work on the other side.

We also design for change.

Fields are added without breaking old clients, removed only through a published deprecation, and versions run side by side long enough for apps in the App Store to catch up.

Mobile releases cannot be forced onto users, so an API that breaks old app versions is an API that breaks the business.
Finally, we keep business rules in one place.

If the rule for a discount lives in the API, the web app, the mobile app and the partner portal all behave the same. If it lives in four front ends, you will eventually find four versions of it.

The build sequence for an API

Design first, code second. Most expensive API mistakes are decided in the first week.

  1. Consumer interviewsWe talk to whoever will call the API, mobile developers, front-end teams or partners, and list the exact data and actions they need.
  2. Contract designWe draft the OpenAPI document, review naming, pagination, filtering and error formats, and freeze version one.
  3. Security designIdentity flow, scopes, token lifetime and secrets storage are chosen and reviewed before endpoints exist.
  4. ImplementationControllers or minimal APIs, services and data access are built in slices, each with tests and a deployed staging copy.
  5. Load and abuse testingWe test expected traffic and obvious misuse, like repeated calls and oversized payloads, on realistic data.
  6. Release and monitoringDeployment, health checks, logging and alerts. After launch the API can move into ongoing maintenance.

Choosing an API style

REST is our default, but it is not always right. Here is how we decide.

Style
Good when
Watch out for
REST with JSON
Most apps, partner access, mobile back ends
Over-fetching on complex screens
Minimal APIs
Small services with few endpoints
Can get messy if the service grows
GraphQL
Many clients needing different data shapes
More complex caching, security and monitoring
gRPC
Service-to-service calls inside your own system
Poor fit for browsers and external partners
Webhooks
Pushing events to partners as they happen
Retries, signatures and delivery logs must be planned

Reliability behaviours worth paying for

A working API is one thing, a dependable one is another.

Network calls fail, clients retry, and mobile users tap buttons twice.

We design write endpoints to be idempotent where it matters, so a repeated payment request does not create two orders.

Long jobs, like report generation or bulk imports, run as background tasks with a status endpoint rather than holding a request open until it times out.

Health checks and structured logs let operations staff see what is wrong before customers do.

For integrations that call outside services, we add timeouts, retries with backoff and a clear fallback, so a slow courier API does not freeze your checkout.

Caching comes last, not first.

Once measurements show which endpoints are hot, we add response caching or distributed caching with a clear rule for when data expires.

Scope and cost drivers for an API

We price after the contract design, since that is when the real size becomes visible.

Number of resources and endpoints

Ten endpoints and two hundred are not the same job, and relationships between resources add logic.

Client types

A single web front end is simple. Mobile apps, partners and public developers each need different access rules and support.

Third-party dependencies

Payment, SMS, courier and accounting services need retries and fallbacks. See ASP.NET third-party integration.

Security demands

Multi-tenant data separation, audit logs and strict token handling take more design and testing.

Performance targets

High traffic may need caching, queues and background workers beyond a straightforward build.

Pre-launch API review

The checks we run, and you can run too, before the first real client connects.

  • Contract matches behaviourSwagger output is compared against real responses for every endpoint.
  • Secrets are not in codeKeys and connection strings are stored in environment configuration or a vault.
  • Permissions tested per roleEach role is tried against each protected endpoint, including attempts to read another user's record.
  • Errors are readableA failed call returns a code and message that a developer can act on, without leaking internals.
  • Monitoring is liveAlerts reach a named person for error spikes and downtime.

Delivery from Lahore for global teams

What it looks like to work with us on an API.

Developer-to-developer contact

Your front-end or mobile developers talk directly to ours in a shared channel, with written decisions kept in the repository.

Staging from week one

A live staging API with Swagger lets other teams build in parallel, instead of waiting for the final release.

Time zone overlap

Working hours overlap with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK and Europe, with early calls for the USA, Canada and Australia.

Contract and payment

Fixed-scope or time-based arrangements, invoiced in USD, with ownership of the code stated in the agreement.

Cases where a custom API is overkill

If a SaaS product you already use offers an API that does the job, build on that rather than writing your own.

If you only need a website that shows content, a CMS with its built-in endpoints is enough.

And if the only client is a single server-rendered site, ASP.NET MVC development may be simpler, since the controllers can call the data layer directly.

A custom API pays off when more than one client needs the same data and rules, when partners must integrate, or when you want to keep your mobile and web products on one source of truth. Starting with that decision saves rework.

Measured quality, not claimed quality

Quality in an API is checkable.

We provide the OpenAPI document, the test suite and its results, response-time measurements from a staging environment and logs showing real errors in plain language.

Your developers can verify behaviour themselves with the Swagger page.

The same discipline sits behind our work for 500+ clients across 48 countries, though we do not quote project outcomes we cannot document here. For broader examples, see our case studies.

Our team in Lahore works across time zones with clients in the USA, UK, UAE and Europe, so mobile and front-end teams on your side get answers in their own working day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is the difference between ASP.NET Web API and ASP.NET Core?

Web API was a separate framework in classic ASP.NET. In ASP.NET Core the two are merged, so APIs are built with controllers or minimal APIs on the same platform as web apps. New projects use Core, as explained on our ASP.NET Core development page.

Can you build an API for an existing mobile app?

Yes, if the app already defines what it needs. We reverse the screens into a contract, review it with your mobile developers and build the matching endpoints.

How do you secure an API?

We use standard token-based authentication, check permissions on the server for every action, validate all input, log suspicious activity and limit request rates. Security also depends on how clients store tokens, so we advise on that too.

Do you provide documentation?

Yes. Every endpoint is described in an OpenAPI specification and published in an interactive page. We also hand over a collection for Postman and a short guide on authentication and errors.

Can the API connect to our older systems?

Often. We build adapters around legacy databases or services so new apps do not depend on them directly. For modernising the legacy side, see ASP.NET Web Forms modernization.

Where do we start?

Describe the clients and data you need through the contact page. We will review the idea, suggest a contract outline and quote the build under our ASP.NET development services.

How do you handle breaking changes after launch?

Through versioning. The old version keeps running while clients migrate, and we publish a deprecation notice with a date agreed with you. Mobile apps especially need that overlap, because users update on their own schedule.
