CodeIgniter development for applications that stay light, fast and maintainable
We build new applications in CodeIgniter 4 and maintain or upgrade older CodeIgniter 2 and 3 systems, covering admin panels, portals, APIs and business tools. It suits teams that want a small, quick framework with a gentle learning curve and modest hosting needs.

A framework that stays out of your way
CodeIgniter is a PHP framework known for its small size, speed and straightforward structure. It gives you routing, models, controllers, views, validation, sessions and security helpers without the weight of larger frameworks.
That makes it a practical choice for internal tools, dashboards, school and clinic systems, listing sites, reporting portals and APIs, especially on modest hosting.
It is not the trendiest option, and we do not pretend it is. Larger ecosystems offer more built-in features and bigger talent pools. What CodeIgniter offers is predictability: a developer can open a project and understand it in an hour. For many Pakistani businesses running on shared or small VPS hosting, that simplicity also lowers running cost and support risk.
The service suits businesses that need a custom system but not a large platform, and owners of existing CodeIgniter applications who need maintenance, security fixes or a move to a supported version.
Typical projects
Most CodeIgniter work falls into a few patterns.
Admin panels and dashboards
Back-office tools for sales, stock, HR, appointments or reporting, with role-based access.
Customer portals
Account areas where clients view orders, invoices, cases or reports.
APIs and integrations
Backends for mobile apps and links between internal systems. See our API development and integration page.
Listings and directories
Searchable catalogues of properties, vehicles, jobs or businesses.
Booking and scheduling tools
Appointments, resources and reminders, often with WhatsApp or SMS notifications.
Legacy rescue
Stabilising and upgrading old CI 2 or CI 3 applications without a full rewrite.

Deliverables on a CodeIgniter project
Exact scope is agreed per project.
- Requirements and data modelUser roles, screens, workflows and a database design agreed before code starts.
- Application buildControllers, models, validation and views structured in a way the next developer can follow.
- Authentication and permissionsSecure login, password handling, role checks and optional two-factor sign-in.
- Security measuresInput validation, CSRF protection, output escaping and safe file uploads.
- Reports and exportsFilters, charts, and CSV or PDF exports for finance and management users.
- IntegrationsPayment gateways, SMS and email services, WhatsApp APIs and accounting systems where an interface exists.

Project flow
Short iterations, with a working system early.
- DiscoveryWe interview the people who will use the system and write down the tasks it must support.
- Design and data modelScreens and database structure are drafted and reviewed with you.
- First working sliceOne end-to-end workflow, such as creating and approving a record, is built so you can test it early.
- IterationsRemaining modules are added in short cycles, each with your feedback.
- Hardening and testingSecurity checks, load checks and user acceptance testing.
- Launch and supportDeployment, training and a support period to fix issues from real use.
CodeIgniter compared with other choices
A balanced view before you commit.
Need | CodeIgniter | Alternative worth considering |
|---|---|---|
Small to mid-size business app | Strong fit, quick to build | Laravel if you expect rapid growth |
Large product with queues, events, packages | Possible, more manual work | |
Content-heavy marketing site | Overbuilt | WordPress |
Very old CI 2 system | Upgrade path exists | Rewrite if code is poor |
Hosting on a small server | Excellent, small footprint | Most frameworks need more resources |
Large hiring pool | Smaller than Laravel | Laravel or Symfony |
Mistakes that make CodeIgniter apps hard to keep
Cheap shortcuts we avoid.
Fat controllers
Business logic buried in controllers is hard to test and reuse.
Raw SQL with user input
Always a security hazard without proper binding.
No environment separation
Debug mode on a live server leaks internals.
Modifying system files
Edits to core files make upgrades painful.
Support after launch
Software needs care once real users arrive.
- Bug fixing windowA defined period after go-live where issues found in daily use are fixed promptly.
- Security patchesFramework and dependency updates applied and tested.
- PHP version trackingPlanned moves to supported PHP versions before old ones are retired.
- Small improvementsMinor features and report changes batched into regular releases.
- Backups and monitoringScheduled backups with restore checks, and alerts for errors and downtime.
Variables that shape the quote
We quote after reviewing the requirements.
Number of modules
Every module adds screens, rules, reports and testing.
User roles
Complex permissions and approval chains take more design and testing.
Integrations
Each outside system needs mapping, credentials and error handling.
Data migration
Importing from spreadsheets or an old system needs clean-up.
Upgrade depth
Moving from CI 3 to CI 4 changes structure and namespaces, so it is closer to a rebuild than a patch.
Reporting needs
Heavy analytics and exports add design and database work.
Example: a multi-branch clinic system
A clinic group with several branches wants appointments, patient records with strict access, reminders by SMS and a monthly report for the owners. The team is small, hosting is modest and the staff need something simple.
Role checks, audit logs and encrypted fields are added deliberately, and reports are built with indexed queries.
The choice comes down to team skills, hosting and the likelihood of growth.
Choosing the framework honestly
If you are starting a product that may grow into a large platform with a team of developers, Laravel is usually the better long-term choice.
Our article on the CodeIgniter, Laravel and Symfony comparison explains how we decide, and PHP versus Laravel covers the wider question of when a framework is needed at all.
Throwing away working software to follow fashion wastes money.
We start with a review, and the PHP code audit and optimization service gives a clear view of what is worth keeping.
Proof by method: how we show quality
For security we check authentication, authorisation, input handling and uploads against common attack patterns, and we keep dependencies current. You can inspect the repository, and documentation travels with the code.
With more than 18 years in web development and 500+ websites delivered, we have seen CodeIgniter systems in every state, from tidy to tangled.
When an older application cannot run on a supported PHP version, we coordinate with our PHP version upgrade and migration work.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers before you get in touch.
Is CodeIgniter still relevant?
Yes. CodeIgniter 4 is actively maintained and suits many business applications. It is a smaller ecosystem than Laravel, but its simplicity and speed remain useful, especially on modest hosting.
Can you upgrade my CodeIgniter 3 application to CodeIgniter 4?
Yes, though it is a structured migration rather than an in-place patch. We review the code, move models, controllers and views step by step and test thoroughly. Sometimes keeping CI 3 on a supported PHP version for now is the cheaper choice.
Is CodeIgniter secure?
The framework provides tools for CSRF protection, validation and escaping. Security still depends on how the application is written and maintained, which is why we review code and update dependencies.
Can CodeIgniter handle a high-traffic site?
It can, with caching, efficient queries and decent hosting. For very large systems with complex background processing, other frameworks may be more convenient.
Do you build APIs in CodeIgniter?
Yes. CodeIgniter 4 includes helpers for REST-style APIs, and we add authentication, versioning and documentation as needed.
Who owns the source code?
You do, subject to the agreement. We deliver the repository and documentation, so you are free to take it to any developer.
