PHP code audit & optimization that shows what is risky, slow or expensive to change

Our PHP code audit & optimization service reviews applications and sites for security flaws, slow queries, fragile structure and upgrade blockers, then fix the findings in priority order. It suits owners and CTOs who inherited a codebase, are about to scale, or want an independent opinion on a vendor's work.

By Junaid Tariq Reviewed October 2026

  • Written findings ranked by business risk, not by tool output alone
  • Fixes for the highest-impact issues, with before-and-after measurements
  • Independent view, useful when you are changing vendors

An independent read of code you cannot read yourself

Most owners of custom software cannot judge its quality. The system works, mostly, until the first traffic spike, the first security scan from a client or the day the original developer leaves.

By then, nobody knows which parts are safe to touch. A code audit gives you that knowledge in plain language: what the application does, how it is built, where it is fragile and what it would take to fix.

Optimization follows from the audit rather than replacing it. Many slow PHP applications share a few causes, such as database queries run in loops, missing indexes, uncached repeated work, bloated includes and unbounded reports. Fixing the five worst of these often changes how the whole system feels, and costs far less than a rewrite.

This service suits companies with custom portals, ERPs, ecommerce stores, WordPress sites with custom plugins and agencies that maintain client systems. It also helps when due diligence is needed before buying or investing in a product.

Areas the audit examines

We agree the focus with you, since a full review of a huge system is rarely the best use of budget.

  • SecurityInput validation, SQL injection, cross-site scripting, authentication, session handling, file uploads, access control and secrets in the codebase.
  • PerformanceSlow queries, missing indexes, repeated work, memory use, autoloading and caching opportunities.
  • Architecture and structureSeparation of concerns, duplicated logic, dead code and how hard it is to change one feature without breaking another.
  • DependenciesOutdated Composer packages, abandoned libraries and licence issues.
  • PHP version readinessCompatibility with current supported versions, as covered in our PHP version upgrade and migration work.
  • Database designSchema, relationships, indexing and data integrity rules.
  • Deployment and operationsVersion control, environments, backups, logging and error handling.
  • Tests and documentationWhat is covered by tests, what is documented and what exists only in someone's head.

500+ websites and web applications delivered over 18+ years for clients in 48 countries, the experience behind your PHP Code Audit & Optimization project.

Expertise

Certified expertise

For PHP Code Audit & Optimization, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.

Authoritativeness

Recognised work

Led by Junaid Tariq, a National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing who also builds WordPress plugins, CRMs and web applications. See the about page.

Trustworthiness

Transparent by default

A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.

Order of work from scoping to re-test

A fixed order keeps the work focused and the findings usable.

  1. Scoping callWe agree the system, the concerns that triggered the audit and which areas to prioritise.
  2. Read-only reviewWe get read access to code and a staging copy, never production data unless unavoidable, and run automated and manual checks.
  3. Findings reportYou receive a written report with issues ranked by severity and effort, and a short summary for non-technical readers.
  4. WalkthroughWe explain the findings with your team, answer questions and agree what to fix first.
  5. RemediationThe agreed fixes are applied on a branch, tested and released with rollback options.
  6. Re-measureWe rerun the checks and compare the results with the baseline.

Tools and techniques

Tools find candidates. Judgement separates real problems from noise.

PHPStan or Psalm

Static analysis for type, logic and dead-code issues.

PHP CodeSniffer

Coding standards and compatibility checks.

Profilers

Xdebug or Blackfire style profiling to find where time is spent.

Database tools

Slow query logs and EXPLAIN plans to locate missing indexes.

Dependency scanners

Composer audit and manual review of package health.

Manual review

Reading critical paths such as login, payment and file upload by hand.

Mistakes that make audits less useful

We set expectations to avoid them.

Scope too broad

Reviewing everything shallowly finds less than reviewing the critical paths well.

No access to a working copy

Static reading alone misses performance faults.

Findings with no owner

A report nobody acts on is an expensive document.

Treating the report as blame

The goal is a safer system, not a verdict on past developers.

Cost drivers of a review project

We quote after a short scoping call.

Codebase size

A small plugin and a large multi-module ERP are different projects.

Documentation and tests

Well-documented code is faster to review than undocumented legacy.

Depth of review

A security-only review is narrower than a full architecture assessment.

Environment access

A working staging copy speeds profiling and testing.

Remediation scope

Findings only, or fixes included, changes the engagement.

Frameworks involved

Custom plain PHP, CodeIgniter, WordPress and Laravel each have their own patterns.

Example: a slow report that was not a server problem

A distributor complains that month-end reports take minutes and sometimes time out, and the proposed fix is a larger server.

A profile shows the page runs a database query for every row of the report, then another inside that loop.

The data volume has grown, so the number of queries has multiplied.

The repair is to fetch the data in a few set-based queries, add an index and cache the result. The server was never the issue.

Findings like this are why we measure before recommending spend.

Hardware is the expensive answer, and often the wrong one.

Limits of a code audit

An audit is a snapshot.

It cannot prove that no vulnerability exists, and it will not turn a poor product idea into a good one.

If the original developers are still working on the system, an audit may reveal friction between your team and theirs, so agree beforehand how findings will be shared.

If you only need a simple health check on a WordPress site, WordPress security hardening or a WordPress speed review is a lighter and cheaper option.

For brand-new systems with no code yet, you need design and architecture help, not an audit.

Proof by method: findings you can verify

Each finding includes where it is in the code, why it matters, how to reproduce it and how we propose to fix it, so your own developers can check our work.

Performance claims come with measurements: request time, query count and memory before and after.

If a change gave no gain, the report says so.

Because we have built and maintained 500+ websites and many custom systems, we know the patterns that hurt over time, such as logic buried in templates, duplicate business rules and unvalidated input from forms.

We explain them in terms of business outcomes: slower releases, higher fix costs and exposed customer data.

Our post on Laravel performance quick wins shows the kind of fixes that often follow, and plugin security vulnerabilities and fixes covers a related class of risks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

How long does a PHP code audit take?

It depends on the size of the code and the depth requested. A focused review of a small application can take days, while a large multi-module system takes longer. We give a timeline at the scoping call.

Do you need access to production data?

No. We work from code and a staging copy with test data. If a problem can only be seen in production, we agree handling rules and use read-only access with logging.

Will you tell my current developer what you found?

Only if you ask. The report belongs to you, and you decide who sees it. We can also join a call with your developers to explain findings constructively.

Can you fix the problems as well as find them?

Yes. Fixes can be part of the engagement or a second phase. Separating the two can be useful if you want a neutral review before choosing who does the repairs.

Is optimization worth it, or should I upgrade my servers?

Hardware helps only when the code is efficient. If queries run in loops, bigger servers just make a slow system slightly faster at a higher bill. We check the code first.

Can you audit a framework app such as Laravel or CodeIgniter?

Yes. We know their conventions and common mistakes. See also our PHP ecommerce development page if your system is a store.
