Laravel multi-tenant applications where every customer's data stays their own

We design and build multi-tenant Laravel applications, where one codebase serves many customer accounts with strictly separated data, settings and branding. It suits SaaS founders, software vendors and companies that run the same system for several branches or clients.

  • Isolation model chosen on your risk and budget, not on habit
  • Tenant-aware queues, caching, files and email, not only database queries
  • Leak tests that prove one tenant cannot read another's records

One product, many customers, no crossed wires

Multi-tenancy means a single running application serves many separate customers, called tenants, each with their own users, data and configuration. A school management system used by fifty schools is the classic example, as is a clinic booking product, a property management tool or an agency portal where each agency's clients must never glimpse another agency's records.

The hard part is not making it work. It is making it fail safely. A forgotten filter on one query, a cached value shared between accounts or a background job that runs without knowing which tenant it belongs to can expose one customer's data to another. In a business-to-business product that is not a bug, it is the end of a customer relationship. We treat tenant isolation as a design property of the whole application and test it on purpose.

This page covers the tenancy layer specifically. For the wider product, including plans, onboarding and admin tools, see Laravel SaaS development.

Choosing an isolation model

Three patterns cover most projects. The right one depends on how sensitive the data is, how many tenants you expect and how much operational work you can carry.

Model
How it works
Best when
Trade-off
Shared database, tenant column
Every table carries a tenant identifier, enforced by global query scopes
Many small tenants, fast start, low hosting cost
A missed scope can leak data, so testing is vital
Schema per tenant
One database, a separate schema for each tenant
Moderate isolation with simpler backups per customer
Migrations run many times; PostgreSQL suits it best
Database per tenant
Each tenant has its own database, switched at request time
Enterprise customers, data residency requests, easy per-customer restore
More infrastructure, slower rollout of schema changes
Hybrid
Small tenants share, large ones get their own database
Mixed customer base with a few demanding accounts
Two code paths to maintain and test

Expertise

Certified expertise

For Laravel Multi-Tenant Applications, engineering is planned together with SEO, speed and reporting, so what ships is findable, fast and measurable rather than just finished.

Authoritativeness

Recognised work

Led by Junaid Tariq, a National Level Award Winner in Digital Marketing who also builds WordPress plugins, CRMs and web applications. See the about page.

Trustworthiness

Transparent by default

A written scope and milestones before build, code and documentation handed over at the end and hosting or domain accounts kept in your name.

Parts of the stack that must carry tenant context

Database queries are only the beginning. These are the places that leak when ignored.

Cache keys

A cached dashboard stored under a generic key will be served to the wrong tenant. Keys carry the tenant identity.

Queued jobs and schedules

Jobs must remember which tenant they run for and restore that context before touching data.

File storage

Uploads are namespaced per tenant, and download links are authorised, not just obscure.

Email and notifications

From addresses, templates and branding follow the tenant's settings.

Search indexes

Whatever search engine you use needs per-tenant filtering or separate indexes.

Logs and exports

Support exports and error logs should not mix customer data, and admin impersonation is recorded.

Scope of a multi-tenancy build

Whether we add tenancy to a new product or retrofit an existing one, the work normally includes the following.

  • Tenancy architecture noteA short written decision on the isolation model with the alternatives considered and the reasons.
  • Tenant identificationResolution by subdomain, custom domain or path, with fallbacks and clear errors for unknown tenants.
  • Data separation layerGlobal scopes, schema or connection switching, applied in one place rather than scattered across controllers.
  • Tenant provisioningAutomated creation of a tenant, with default settings, admin user and seed data.
  • Per-tenant settings and brandingLogo, colours, time zone, currency and feature flags stored and applied per tenant.
  • Tenant-safe background workQueues, scheduled commands and notifications that carry and restore tenant context.
  • Isolation testsAutomated tests that create two tenants and try to cross the boundary through every main route.
  • Operations toolingPer-tenant backup and restore steps, migration runners and a view for your support team.

Delivery plan for a tenancy project

Retrofits take more care than new builds, so the first step is always a look at what exists.

  1. Risk and requirements workshopWe ask about customer expectations, contract terms on data, regional hosting needs and growth forecasts, then shortlist isolation models.
  2. Proof on one flowA thin slice, such as login, one record type and one background job, is built end to end under the chosen model to expose problems early.
  3. Roll out across the applicationRemaining modules are converted in order of risk. Each gets tests that try to read another tenant's data.
  4. Provisioning and migration toolingCreating, suspending, exporting and deleting tenants becomes a repeatable, logged process.
  5. Pre-launch reviewWe run a leak review, test restores and check performance with a realistic number of tenants.
  6. Support during onboardingThe first customers' go-live is watched closely, and issues are fixed against tests so they stay fixed.

Packages, custom code and cost factors

Laravel has well-regarded tenancy packages, and in many projects we use one as a base rather than writing everything.

A package saves time on tenant resolution and database switching, but it does not understand your queues, your search index or your reporting tables. Expect a mix: a package for the core, custom code for the edges.

We explain the choice and the long-term maintenance consequences before committing.

What moves cost is the isolation model, the number of places tenant context must travel, how much existing code must be retrofitted, custom domains and certificates, per-tenant customisation depth and the operational tooling needed.

Retrofitting a single-customer application usually costs more than designing tenancy in from the start, because every query must be found and checked.

Details of how we quote are on the contact page, and the broader architecture is discussed in building a SaaS with Laravel.

Isolation evidence you can review

No one can promise a system is flawless. This is the evidence you get that we tested the boundary.

Cases where tenancy adds needless complexity

If you serve one organisation, or if each customer can safely get a separate installation, tenancy is extra complexity.

Some products are better as single-tenant deployments, each with their own server and database, especially when only a handful of large customers pay well and demand total separation.

That path is simpler to reason about, though upgrades must be rolled out to each instance.
Weigh it honestly.

The deciding questions are how many customers you expect, how different their needs will be, and what each one has asked about data handling. If you are unsure, the cheaper step is a design session, not a build.

Related decisions about interactive front ends live in Livewire and Inertia development, and payments across tenants, such as each tenant using their own gateway account, are covered under payment gateway integration.

If the app may scale to heavy use, plan performance work as well.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is the difference between multi-tenant and multi-user?

Multi-user means several people log in to one organisation's workspace. Multi-tenant means several separate organisations share the same application, each with their own users and fully separated data. Most multi-tenant systems are also multi-user within each tenant.

Which tenancy model should I pick?

Choose a shared database for many small customers and low cost, and separate databases when customers demand strong isolation or per-customer restore. We recommend after a short workshop about your customers' expectations and your support capacity.

Can you convert my existing Laravel app to multi-tenant?

Yes, though it is a careful retrofit. We audit queries, jobs and caches, build the tenancy layer, convert modules in order of risk and add leak tests as we go. The first step is a code review to size the work.

Do you support custom domains for each tenant?

Yes. Tenants can use a subdomain or their own domain, with certificate handling planned from the start. The hosting setup affects how automatic this can be, so we settle it early.

How do you handle updates across all tenants?

In shared models one deployment updates everyone. With separate databases, migrations run per tenant through tooling that logs failures and can resume. Planned releases and rollbacks are part of the operating plan.

Will tenant isolation affect performance?

Not by itself, but poorly indexed shared tables get slow as tenant counts grow. We test with realistic data volumes and tune where needed. See also Laravel performance quick wins.
