How do I write Google Ads copy that converts? Echo the search, prove the benefit, ask once

Write ad copy that repeats what the person searched, states one specific benefit, and asks for one clear action. Keep promises you can keep on the landing page. Copy converts when the ad, the keyword and the page all say the same thing, not when the wording is clever.

Key takeaways
  • Start from the search term and write for that intent, not for your brand.
  • One concrete benefit and one call to action beat a list of vague claims.
  • The landing page must repeat the promise or conversions will fall.
  • Test one change at a time and judge on conversions, not clicks.

Think about the searcher, not the slogan

A search ad is read in a second or two, between other results, often on a phone. The reader is not looking for your company. They are looking for a fix to a problem they typed in words. The best copy starts there: what did they just type, what do they want to happen, and what would make them believe you can do it.

This is why ad groups need tight themes. If one group holds five different services, the ad has to speak vaguely to all of them. When one group holds one service and its close variants, the headline can use the same words as the search. That is the cheapest relevance gain in the account, and it also supports a better Quality Score.

Weak and strong versions

The same business, written two ways. The pattern matters more than the specific words.

A writing process you can repeat

Use it for every ad group. It keeps copy honest and testable.

  1. List the top searchesPull the five to ten most common queries for the ad group from the search terms report or Keyword Planner.
  2. Name the single jobDecide what the ad must do: get a call, a quote request, a purchase, or a visit to a specific page.
  3. Write headlines in three anglesOne that repeats the keyword, one that states the benefit, one that handles an objection or adds proof.
  4. Add a clear call to actionUse a verb the reader recognises: call, get a quote, book, order. Match it to what the page offers.
  5. Check against the landing pageEvery claim in the ad must appear on the page in the first screen. Remove any that do not.
  6. Launch and read resultsRun at least two variants, watch conversions rather than clicks, and replace the loser.

Headline formulas that stay honest

Formulas are a starting point, not a script. One that works for service businesses is: service plus place plus proof. 'Emergency Dental Care in Gulberg, Same-Day Visits' says what, where and how fast in a handful of words. Another suits shops: product plus differentiator plus action, such as 'Handmade Leather Wallets, Free Delivery Nationwide, Order Today', provided the claims are true.

For lead generation, the question-and-answer pattern can work. A headline asks the worry the searcher has, and the description answers it. For B2B, lead with the outcome and the industry: 'Warehouse Racking for Pakistani Manufacturers, Site Survey Included'. Pick the pattern from your audience and your evidence.

Always read your final copy aloud. If it sounds like something no human would say, rewrite it. The goal is clarity at a glance, because people scan ads far faster than they read pages.

Copy ingredients that tend to help

Use the ones that are true for your business, not all of them.

The searched phrase

Repeating what the user typed makes the ad look relevant, and bolding helps the eye find it.

A specific differentiator

Delivery speed, service area, certification, warranty terms or response time. Anything a competitor could not copy without becoming it.

A frictionless next step

Call, WhatsApp, free quote, book a visit. One action, clearly stated.

Honest qualifiers

Mention minimum order, service area or consultation fee when relevant. It filters poor-fit clicks and protects budget.

Local cues

City, district or landmark. For a Lahore business, 'Gulberg', 'DHA' or 'Johar Town' signals real presence.

Assets that add detail

Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets and call assets make the ad bigger and give extra reasons to click.

Mistakes that lower conversion rate

Read your live ads against this list.

  • Promising something the page lacksA free quote in the ad and a paywalled form on the page frustrates and wastes the click.
  • Using the same headline everywhereResponsive search ads need varied lines. Repeats waste the space and limit combinations.
  • Stuffing keywords unnaturallyAwkward repetition looks spammy and reduces trust.
  • Over-promising or making risky claimsSuperlatives, medical or financial claims and guarantees of results can trigger disapprovals. See why accounts get disapproved.
  • Writing for the wrong stageA bottom-of-funnel searcher wants a price or a call. A researcher wants information. Do not push buying at the wrong moment.
  • Ignoring mobileLong lines get cut. Check previews on a phone, and use call assets where people prefer to ring.

Writing for Pakistani and export audiences

For local campaigns, think about how people really search. Many use English words in Roman Urdu spelling, or short phrases like 'AC service near me'. Your ad can use plain English with the locally familiar terms and place names. Mentioning cash on delivery, WhatsApp ordering or easy installments, where genuinely offered, answers questions your buyer is already asking.

For clients selling abroad, check spelling and idiom for the target market. British and American usage differ, and a Lahore-based writer should have a native-level reviewer for the first versions. Payment terms, shipping times and returns matter more in overseas ads, because trust is harder to build with a stranger who has never heard of you.

Testing without fooling yourself

Change one thing between variants, such as the main benefit or the call to action, so the result means something. Let both run long enough to collect meaningful impressions and, ideally, conversions. A winning click-through rate does not guarantee a winning ad; check cost per lead as well, as explained in what a good click-through rate is.

Keep a swipe file of past winners and losers with notes. Over a few months, that log teaches you more about your market than any template could. If you want copy and structure reviewed together, our Google Search ads management team can do it, and you can get in touch to start.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

How long should a Google Ads headline be?

Headlines have a tight character limit, so each line should carry one idea. Write several short lines that stand alone, because responsive search ads combine them in different orders.

Should I use my brand name in the ad?

Include it in a headline or two if people know you, or if trust is a problem. For unknown brands, lead with the benefit and let the brand appear in the display URL and assets.

Does using the keyword in the headline help?

It usually helps relevance and the searcher's sense that the ad answers their query. Do not force it where it makes the line awkward.

How many ads should I test per ad group?

Keep it manageable. One or two responsive search ads per group is enough for most accounts, so each gets enough impressions to judge.

Can the same copy work on Search and Performance Max?

Not directly. Performance Max builds ads from assets across channels, so write variants for different formats. Compare your options in what Performance Max is.

Can I use numbers and prices in the ad?

Yes, if they are accurate and kept up to date. A visible price or offer can filter out poor-fit clicks. Make sure the landing page shows the same figure, because mismatches cause disapprovals and distrust.
