How Many Headlines Should a Responsive Search Ad Have? Variety beats volume

A responsive search ad allows up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google mixes them to fit each search. Write enough distinct headlines to give the system real options: include the keyword, benefits, proof and a call to action. Pin only when legal or brand rules require it, because pinning reduces the combinations Google can test.

Key takeaways
  • Each RSA takes up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters.
  • Distinct headlines matter more than filling every slot with variations of one line.
  • Pin only for legal or brand requirements, and pin more than one option per position.
  • Ad strength is a guide, not a result; judge ads on conversions.

How does a responsive search ad assemble an ad?

You give Google a set of headlines and descriptions. For each search, it picks up to three headlines and up to two descriptions and arranges them into an ad, choosing combinations it predicts will perform best for that query, device and person. Not every ad shows all three headlines; on smaller screens fewer may appear.

This means every headline must make sense on its own and next to any other. A headline that only works after another specific line will produce clumsy ads. Think of the set as a pool of strong, independent statements about your business, rather than a script.

What are the headline and description limits?

What should go in each headline?

Aim for real variety. Most strong RSAs cover the same themes: the service or product in the words people search, the main benefit, a specific feature, proof such as years in business or accreditations you actually hold, the location you serve, an offer if there is one, and a clear call to action. Our guide to writing Google Ads copy that converts goes deeper on messaging.

Use several headlines that include the main keyword, because ads that reflect the search tend to be more relevant, which supports Quality Score. But do not write ten versions of the same line. Fifteen near-identical headlines give Google no more choice than five. If you can only write eight or ten genuinely different headlines, that is better than padding.

When should I pin, and when not?

Pinning fixes an asset to a position.

Pin for legal text

Regulated businesses that must show a disclaimer or licence number in every ad can pin it.

Pin for brand rules

If the brand name must always appear first, pin it to headline position one.

Pin two or three options

Pinning several headlines to one position keeps some variety while meeting the rule.

Avoid pinning everything

Pinning every position turns an RSA into a fixed ad and removes most testing.

Do not pin to fix bad copy

If a headline reads badly in some combinations, rewrite it instead of pinning around it.

Does ad strength matter for performance?

Ad strength rates your ad from Poor to Excellent based on how many assets you provide, how distinct they are and how relevant they are to your keywords. It is useful feedback while writing, because it points out repetition and missing keywords. Google has said ad strength is not itself a factor in the ad auction.

Judge ads on what they deliver: conversions, cost per conversion and conversion rate. An ad rated Average that brings qualified leads is better than an Excellent ad that does not. Use ad strength as a checklist, and the asset report and conversion data as the verdict. Google allows up to three enabled RSAs per ad group, so you have room to compare a few approaches.

How do I test new assets?

Small, steady changes are easier to read than big rewrites.

  1. Review the asset reportLook at impressions and performance data for each headline and description.
  2. Replace the weakestSwap out assets that rarely show or perform poorly, a few at a time.
  3. Test one idea at a timeFor example, add price-led headlines in one round and urgency-led headlines in the next.
  4. Use experiments for big changesAd variations or campaign experiments give a cleaner comparison than editing live ads.
  5. Let assets gather dataNew assets need impressions before their performance means anything.

What about Urdu, Arabic and multi-market accounts?

If you advertise in Pakistan or the Gulf, decide whether to target English, Urdu or Arabic searches and write separate ads for each language, in separate ad groups or campaigns. Roman Urdu searches usually still match English-language settings, so test a few Roman Urdu headlines where the audience uses them. Arabic headlines must fit the same 30-character limit, so keep them short.

Show prices in the local currency, such as rupees, dirhams, riyals or pounds, and only if you can honour them. Mention WhatsApp in a headline where it is the preferred contact method, as is common in Pakistan and the Gulf. For the UK, check claims carefully against advertising rules, since terms like best or cheapest need evidence.

How we handle this for clients

We start by reading the search terms and landing pages, so headlines reflect what people actually search and what the page delivers. Then we write a full set of distinct headlines and descriptions per ad group, check them for policy and claims, and pin only where rules demand it.

After launch we review the asset report and conversion data, replace weak assets in small rounds and keep a record of what was tested. If AI Max text customisation is on, we review the generated text too. Ad copy work is part of our Google Ads management service.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

How many headlines should I use in an RSA?

Use as many as you can make genuinely different, up to 15. Google recommends providing plenty, but distinct headlines matter more than the number. Padding with near-duplicates adds little.

How long can RSA headlines be?

Each headline can be up to 30 characters and each description up to 90 characters. The two display path fields allow up to 15 characters each.

Does pinning headlines hurt performance?

Pinning limits the combinations Google can test, which can reduce performance. Pin only when legal or brand rules require it, and pin two or three options to each pinned position.

How many responsive search ads per ad group?

Google allows up to three enabled responsive search ads per ad group. Many advertisers run one or two well-built ads and test new assets within them.

Is Excellent ad strength required?

No. Ad strength is guidance on asset variety and relevance, and Google says it is not an auction factor. Judge ads on conversions and cost per conversion.
