Do Google Reviews Help My Rankings and AI Answers? Yes, for local search

Yes for local search. Google lists prominence, which includes review count and rating, among the factors for local results, and AI answers often summarise what reviewers say. Ask every happy customer for a review, reply to all of them, and never buy or gate reviews, which breaks Google policy.

Key takeaways
  • Local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence.
  • Review count and score are part of prominence, per Google.
  • Ask every customer the same way; never filter or pay.
  • What reviewers write shapes how AI tools describe you.

How do reviews affect local rankings?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location in the query. Prominence is how well known your business is, both online and offline. Google uses information from across the web, including links, articles and directories, to judge it.

Reviews sit inside prominence. Google's own help page says review count and review score factor into local search ranking, and that more reviews and positive ratings can improve a business's local ranking. They are not the only factor, and a business far from the searcher will not outrank closer ones on reviews alone, but they are one of the few factors you can steadily improve.

Do reviews show up in AI answers?

AI tools often describe local businesses using what customers say about them. Google Maps and Search can show review summaries, and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity may draw on review sites and directories when asked for a recommendation. If reviewers repeatedly mention fast service or clear pricing, those phrases may appear in the answer.

This means review content matters, not only the star rating. You cannot write reviews for customers, but you can make it easy for them to be specific. A request that says, for example, tell us what we helped you with, tends to produce more useful reviews than a request for five stars. For the wider picture, see how to get mentioned in ChatGPT.

How do I get more genuine reviews?

Make asking a routine, not an occasional push.

  1. Get your review linkIn your Google Business Profile, use the option to ask for reviews to copy a short link.
  2. Ask at the right momentSend the request soon after the job is finished or the customer is happy, by WhatsApp, SMS or email.
  3. Ask everyone the same waySend the request to all customers, not only those you expect to be positive.
  4. Make it easyUse a QR code at reception or on invoices, and keep the message short.
  5. Train your teamMake sure staff know how and when to ask, and track how many requests go out.

How should I reply to reviews?

Reply to every review, positive and negative. Google encourages businesses to respond, and replies show future customers that someone is paying attention. Keep replies short, personal and polite. Thank the customer, mention something specific, and avoid copying the same line onto every review. Readers notice template replies, and they make the profile feel automated rather than run by real people.

For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the problem, and offer a way to resolve it offline, such as a phone number or email. Do not share private details about the customer. If a review breaks Google's content policies, for example it is fake, abusive or from a competitor, you can report it through your profile, but Google decides whether to remove it.

What breaks Google's review policy?

These can lead to reviews being removed or profile restrictions.

Buying reviews

Paying for reviews, or using services that post them, is fake engagement.

Incentives

Offering discounts, gifts or entries into prize draws in exchange for reviews is not allowed.

Review gating

Asking customers first whether they are happy and only sending happy ones to Google breaks policy.

Staff and owner reviews

Reviews from employees, owners or family of the business are a conflict of interest.

Bulk requests from one place

Reviews posted together from the same device or location can be filtered.

Do reviews outside Google matter?

Yes. AI tools and searchers look beyond Google. Depending on your sector, reviews on Facebook, Trustpilot, industry directories or marketplaces can be cited when someone asks for the best provider. A strong rating on Google with no presence elsewhere can look thin, both to customers checking you out and to AI systems comparing sources.

Pick the one or two other platforms that matter in your industry and country, claim your profiles, and keep them active. Do not spread requests across too many sites, because customers will only review once. Our guide on optimising your Google Business Profile covers the other parts of the profile that work alongside reviews.

How we handle this for clients

We start by auditing the Google Business Profile and the main review platforms for each location, including rating, how recent reviews are, reply rate and any policy problems. We compare this with the businesses that appear for the client's key local searches. That shows where the gap is: the number of reviews, how recent they are, or how the business responds to them.

Then we set up a simple review request process that staff can follow, with a link, a message template in the right languages and a QR code. We draft reply guidelines and templates the team can personalise, and we review progress monthly. This is part of our local SEO services.

What about Pakistan, the Gulf and the UK?

In Pakistan and the Gulf, WhatsApp is often the easiest way to ask for a review, and customers may write in Urdu, Roman Urdu or Arabic. Reply in the language the customer used where you can, because that reads as more personal. Each branch should have its own verified profile, so reviews build up where customers actually visited.

In the UK, consumer law now explicitly bans fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews, so the rules are not only Google's. Platforms such as Trustpilot are widely used there. Wherever you operate, the safe approach is the same: ask everyone, never pay, and never filter. It takes longer than shortcuts, but the reviews you earn stay in place and keep working.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Are Google reviews a ranking factor?

For local results, yes. Google states that review count and review score factor into local search ranking. For normal web results the link is less direct, but reviews still influence clicks and how your business is described.

How many reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number. Compare yourself with the businesses that appear for your main searches in your area. A steady flow of recent, detailed reviews matters more than reaching a single target.

Can I ask customers for reviews?

Yes. Google allows and encourages businesses to ask customers for reviews. You must not offer incentives, ask only happy customers, or write reviews on their behalf.

Do review replies help local SEO?

Google encourages replies and says they show you value customers. There is no official statement that replies themselves are a ranking factor, but they build trust with readers and can encourage more reviews.

Can I remove a bad review?

You cannot delete a review yourself. If it breaks Google's policies, such as being fake, off-topic or abusive, you can report it from your profile. Genuine negative reviews stay, so reply calmly and fix the issue.
