- There is no AI Overviews tag, file or schema to add.
- A page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet.
- Answer first, then support it with real experience and detail.
- AI Overviews data is counted in Search Console's Performance report.
What does Google say about AI features?
Google's guidance for site owners is clear: the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode as to normal search, and there are no additional technical requirements. In 2026 Google also published an AI optimisation guide that describes optimising for generative AI search as still being SEO.
That guide lists things you do not need to do, including creating special AI text files, splitting content into small chunks for machines, or rewriting pages in a special style for AI. It also says structured data is not required for generative AI features. The work is the familiar work, done well.
What makes a page eligible?
To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. If a page is blocked by robots.txt, set to noindex, or not indexed because Google sees it as low value, it cannot be used.
Preview controls also apply. Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex can limit how content appears in AI features. Check your SEO plugin and templates, because some sites apply these tags more widely than intended. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm important pages are indexed and that the version Google sees contains your main text. Fix these basics before spending time on rewriting.
How should I structure a page to be cited?
A simple pattern that suits both readers and AI features.
- Answer in the first paragraphState the direct answer in two or three sentences before any background.
- Use question-style headingsBreak the rest of the page into the follow-up questions people actually ask.
- Add specific detailInclude steps, requirements, cost ranges you can stand behind, local rules or examples from your own work.
- Use tables and lists where they helpComparisons and step lists are easy to read and easy to quote accurately.
- Date and maintain the pageShow when it was last reviewed and update facts when they change.
How do I show first-hand expertise?
AI Overviews draw on pages Google's systems already consider helpful and reliable. Google's helpful content guidance asks whether content shows first-hand experience and clear expertise. Name the author, link to a real author page, and explain how you know what you are saying. A page written by a named, qualified person, with a short note on their background, is easier to trust than an anonymous one.
The strongest pages include things only you can write: your process, the questions clients ask you, the mistakes you see, photos of your work, and local details. Generic text that repeats what every other site says gives Google little reason to cite you. Our guide to E-E-A-T explains these signals in more depth. Experience is hard to fake, which is exactly why it is worth showing clearly on every important page.
Which technical basics matter?
Check these before rewriting any content.
- IndexingImportant pages are indexed, with no accidental noindex or robots.txt blocks.
- RenderingMain content is in the HTML or renders reliably; nothing key depends on clicks or logins.
- Speed and stabilityPages load quickly on mobile and pass Core Web Vitals where possible.
- Internal linksEach important page is linked from relevant pages so Google can find and understand it.
- Snippet controlsnosnippet and max-snippet are only used where you truly want to limit previews.
How we handle this for clients
We start with the searches that matter to the business and check which of them show AI Overviews, and which sources are cited. We then audit indexing, snippet controls and rendering for the pages that should be appearing. Often the first problems are simple: a template with nosnippet, a key page set to noindex, or content that only loads after a click. Those are fixed before any writing starts.
Next we rewrite or build pages around an answer-first structure, add real expertise and author details, and fix internal linking so related pages support each other. We review progress in Search Console each month alongside leads, rather than chasing one-off screenshots, because AI results change from day to day and a single check proves very little. Details are on our AI SEO, AEO and GEO services page.
What changes for Pakistan, Gulf and UK businesses?
AI Overviews are available in many countries and languages, but which queries show them varies by market. Check the searches that matter in each country separately, and in each language your customers use, including Urdu and Arabic. Results for an English search in Dubai can look quite different from the same search in London or Lahore, so a check from one location does not tell you much about another market.
For local services, AI answers often sit near map results, so a complete Google Business Profile still matters. If you serve the UK and UAE from one site, give each market its own pages with local details, currency and contact numbers, so Google can match the right page to the right searcher. See our guide on SEO for several countries.
