  4. Magento vs Shopify: Which Is Better for Large Catalogs?

Magento vs Shopify: which is better for large catalogs and who should pick which

In the Magento vs Shopify debate, for most large catalogs the honest answer is Shopify unless your data is unusual. Magento wins when you have complex attributes, many price rules, B2B accounts or deep ERP links that need custom logic. Shopify wins when you want lower running effort. The deciding factor is rarely product count, it is how complicated each product is.

By Junaid Tariq Updated October 2026

Key takeaways
  • Product count alone does not decide this; attribute complexity, pricing rules and integrations do.
  • Shopify costs less effort to run, Magento gives more control and asks for a real engineering team.
  • Magento suits B2B-heavy and ERP-driven catalogs, Shopify suits fast-moving retail catalogs.
  • Migration between the two is possible but never free, so choose for the next five years.

Why catalog size is the wrong first question

When people ask which platform handles a large catalog, they usually mean how many SKUs it can hold. Both can hold a great many. A store with tens of thousands of simple products, one price each and a few filters, runs happily on Shopify. A store with a few thousand products where every item has thirty technical attributes, customer-specific prices and three warehouses is a different animal, even though the number is smaller.

So before comparing platforms, describe your catalog in terms of shape. How many attributes does a product carry, and are they used for filtering? Do prices change by customer group, quantity or contract? Does stock live in more than one place? Does an ERP own the product data, or do your staff type it into the admin? Those answers point to a platform far more reliably than a SKU count.

I have seen teams choose Magento because their catalog was big, then use none of the features that make Magento worth its weight. I have also seen Shopify stores bend themselves into shapes the platform never intended, with apps stacked on apps to fake a pricing model. Both mistakes start with the wrong question.

Where Magento earns its complexity

Magento is built for merchants whose rules do not fit a template. A parts distributor, for example, may need compatibility lookups, quote requests, minimum order quantities and a price list per account. Magento models these natively or through well-understood extensions, and your developers can change the checkout or the pricing engine itself, not just wrap it.

It also suits stores that run several storefronts from one catalog: different languages, currencies or brands sharing products and inventory. Multiple store views are a core concept rather than an add-on. If an ERP, a PIM and a warehouse system all need to exchange data in both directions, a self-hosted platform lets you build that integration without waiting for an app vendor. Our Magento third-party integration work is mostly this kind of plumbing.

The price of that freedom is ownership. Security patches, version upgrades, hosting tuning and extension compatibility are your responsibility. A neglected Magento store becomes slow and risky, which is why we put so much weight on a Magento 2 speed checklist and on regular patching.

Where Shopify is the better call

Shopify removes a whole category of work. Hosting, uptime, PCI scope, checkout security and platform upgrades are handled by the vendor. For a retailer with a large but conventional catalog, such as apparel, accessories, home goods or beauty, that is a real saving in people and worry. Product launches are quick, and marketing teams can change pages without opening a developer ticket.

Shopify's checkout is also among the most tested in the industry, and its ecosystem of apps covers subscriptions, reviews, bundles and loyalty. When a catalog needs more structure, metafields and metaobjects help, and Shopify Plus development adds checkout customisation, automation and wholesale channels. If you are weighing that jump, read when to move to Shopify Plus.

The limits show up when your business logic is the product. If you need a pricing formula that depends on five variables, or a configurator that builds a bill of materials, you will spend more time working around Shopify than working with it. That is the moment to ask whether a custom build is cheaper than the workaround.

Catalog types and the platform they usually fit

Use these as starting positions, not rules. Your integrations and team size can reverse any of them.

Fast-moving retail

Fashion, gadgets and gifts with simple attributes and frequent launches. Shopify usually wins on speed and low upkeep.

Technical or spare-parts catalog

Heavy attributes, compatibility and quote flows. Magento handles the data shape better.

Wholesale and B2B

Account-specific prices, credit terms and reorder lists. See Magento B2B features wholesalers need before deciding.

Multi-brand or multi-country

Several storefronts from one catalog. Magento store views are natural; Shopify offers markets and Plus expansion stores.

Marketplace-style catalog

Many vendors, many sellers. Neither is a marketplace out of the box, expect custom work on either.

Small team, big ambitions

If nobody on staff can own servers and upgrades, Shopify protects you from yourself.

Mistakes that make a platform look worse than it is

Most failed replatforms trace back to one of these.

  • Choosing by SKU countCount attributes, price rules and integrations instead.
  • Budgeting for build, not for upkeepMagento needs a standing maintenance arrangement. Shopify needs app and theme review.
  • Importing messy dataDuplicate SKUs and free-text attributes will wreck filters on any platform. Clean first.
  • Ignoring searchOn a large catalog, search quality drives revenue. Test it with real queries before launch.
  • Skipping redirectsChanging platform changes URLs. Without a redirect map you lose organic traffic.
  • Buying every extensionEach extra module adds speed cost and a security surface. Keep the list short.

Pakistan-specific points: payments, cash on delivery and team availability

Pakistani merchants face a few local realities. Cash on delivery still carries a large share of orders, so your platform must handle COD confirmation, courier integration and returns without friction. Magento makes it easy to build a custom COD verification step through WhatsApp or SMS. On Shopify you will usually rely on an app or a Plus checkout customisation for the same job.

Card payments need care on both sides. Shopify's native payment options depend on country support, and many Pakistani stores connect local gateways or use Stripe through a foreign entity. Magento can connect to local gateways through extensions or custom modules. Whatever you choose, check the current gateway terms and confirm settlement rules before committing. Our guide to accepting payments on Shopify in Pakistan covers the Shopify side.

Hiring matters as well. Magento developers are available in Pakistan but they are a smaller pool than Shopify and WordPress developers, and good ones are not cheap relative to local salaries. A Lahore-based team like ours serves clients in the USA, UK, UAE and beyond, which gives you a delivery partner without hiring a permanent specialist.

Junaid’s take, from experience

Junaid's take

In my experience, about two out of three merchants who believe they need Magento would be better served by Shopify. They are drawn by the idea of control, but they do not have the team to use it, and they underestimate how much of their weekly effort will go into patching and hosting.

I recommend Magento when at least one of these is true: your pricing or catalog logic is the competitive advantage, you sell to businesses with contract prices, or your ERP is the source of truth and the integration is deep. Otherwise start on Shopify, and move to Plus when checkout or wholesale needs outgrow it.

Whichever way you lean, write down your attributes, price rules and integrations on one page and have a developer review it before you pay for a build. If you want that review from us, get in touch and we will tell you plainly if Magento is overkill. If you do go ahead, see how migrating to Magento 2 actually works first.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Can Shopify handle a catalog with a very large number of products?

Yes, many large merchants run on Shopify and Shopify Plus. The practical limits come from product variants, metafield complexity and app performance, not the headline product count. Check the current platform limits with Shopify before you plan an import.

Is Magento free?

Magento Open Source can be downloaded without a licence fee, but you pay for hosting, development, extensions and ongoing maintenance. Adobe Commerce is the paid edition with extra features, including more advanced B2B tools. Total cost depends on your team and integrations.

Which platform is better for SEO on a big catalog?

Both can rank well. Magento gives you more control over URLs, canonical rules and structured data. Shopify gives you clean defaults but fixed URL patterns. Faceted navigation and duplicate pages need care on either platform, so budget SEO time in the build.

How hard is it to switch later?

It is a real project: product data, customers, orders, redirects and integrations all move. Done well it takes planning but is routine. Our Magento migration services page explains what that involves.

Do you build on both platforms?

Yes. Our team delivers Magento and Adobe Commerce builds as well as Shopify development, so the recommendation is based on your catalog, not on what we happen to sell.
