Magento theme development that makes your store look like your brand and load like a modern shop

Our Magento theme development service designs and builds custom storefront themes for Magento 2, covering layout, templates, styling, checkout and mobile behaviour. It suits merchants whose default or purchased theme no longer matches their brand, their customers or their speed targets.

The storefront is never just a skin

A Magento theme is more than colours and fonts. It decides how category pages filter, how product options are presented, how many requests the browser makes before a page is usable, and how many steps stand between a basket and a paid order.

The same catalog in two different themes can behave like two different businesses.

Magento 2 themes are built from layout XML, PHTML templates, LESS or CSS, JavaScript and a fallback hierarchy that lets a child theme inherit from a parent such as Luma or Blank. Done well, that structure means you override only what you change, and upgrades stay manageable. Done badly, it produces copied core files, hard-coded values and a theme that breaks whenever Magento is updated.

We build themes for stores that need design control: fashion and furniture brands where presentation sells, wholesalers whose buyers want fast reordering, and merchants in Pakistan, the UAE or the UK whose customers browse almost entirely on phones. We write as a team that has delivered 500+ websites, and we treat the theme as a business tool, not a portfolio piece.

Theme project deliverables

The deliverables below are standard. Scope changes only when your storefront has unusual requirements.

  • Design review and wireframesWe audit your current store and analytics, then agree wireframes for home, category, product, cart and checkout before any code is written.
  • Child theme setupA properly registered theme inheriting from a chosen parent, under version control, with build tooling for styles and scripts.
  • Template developmentPHTML and layout overrides for header, navigation, mega menu, product listing, product page, mini cart and footer.
  • Responsive and touch behaviourLayouts designed mobile first, with tap targets, sticky add to cart and filter drawers tested on actual phones.
  • Checkout stylingVisual and structural improvements to the Magento checkout that keep its payment logic intact, with fewer fields and clearer error messages.
  • CMS and Page Builder blocksReusable content blocks so your marketing team can build landing pages without calling a developer.
  • Accessibility and RTLColour contrast, keyboard navigation, focus states and right-to-left support if you serve Urdu or Arabic readers.
  • Extension compatibilityStyling and template fixes so the extensions you rely on, such as reviews, wishlists or layered navigation, look native.

Choosing the frontend approach

There are several ways to build a Magento storefront today. We recommend based on your catalog, team and budget, not on what is fashionable.

Approach
Strength
Trade-off
Child theme on Luma or Blank
Familiar, widely supported, many extensions work as is
Heavier JavaScript and slower out of the box
Hyvä theme
Lean frontend using Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS, faster pages
Some extensions need compatibility modules; see Hyvä theme development
Purchased theme plus customisation
Quick start for modest budgets
Bloated code and design limits if the theme is poorly built
Headless or PWA frontend
Full design freedom and app-like feel
Much higher build and maintenance effort

Our build process

Design decisions are approved in stages so you are never surprised by a finished theme that nobody asked for.

  1. Discovery and auditWe review analytics, heatmaps if you have them, your catalog types and the extensions already installed. The output is a list of what the theme must do and what it should stop doing.
  2. Design and prototypeWireframes become high-fidelity designs for key templates. You review on desktop and phone sizes and sign off before development.
  3. Theme buildWe code the child theme, components and templates in a staging environment, committing to version control and keeping core files untouched.
  4. Integration and QAWe test against your extensions, payment methods and languages, run browser and device checks, and compare speed readings against the pre-build baseline.
  5. Launch and tuningThe theme is deployed through your normal release process. After launch we monitor errors and behaviour, then fix issues found on live traffic.

Speed, SEO and the theme's hidden costs

Theme choices can quietly damage both rankings and sales.

Large unoptimised images, render-blocking scripts, layout shift from late-loading banners and heavy sliders are all theme problems.

Google measures several of these through Core Web Vitals, which is why we build with performance budgets from the first sketch.

For deeper work on an existing slow store, see Magento speed optimization and our Magento 2 speed checklist.

On SEO, a theme must output clean heading structure, crawlable pagination and faceted navigation, correct canonical tags and structured data for products.

We coordinate with your SEO lead or with our Magento SEO services team so design changes do not undo ranking work.

One honest caveat: a beautiful theme cannot rescue weak product data or an unclear offer.

We will tell you when the real problem is content, pricing or trust signals rather than template design.

Factors behind theme cost and timeline

We quote after discovery. These are the factors that decide the figure.

Number of unique templates

A store with simple category and product pages is far quicker than one with bundles, configurators, brand pages and landing templates.

Design starting point

Working from your existing brand system is quicker than creating identity, imagery and layouts from scratch.

Extensions and integrations

Each third-party module that outputs frontend code may need styling, testing and sometimes template changes.

Languages and currencies

Multi-store setups and right-to-left scripts add layout and QA work.

Frontend technology

A Luma child theme, Hyvä build and headless frontend differ widely in effort and in who can maintain them later.

Content readiness

Photography, copy and banners must arrive on time, or the project waits for them.

Signs a theme rebuild is not your next step

Sometimes a redesign is the wrong spend. We suggest alternatives in these situations.

  • The store is slow because of hostingIf the server is undersized or caches are off, a new theme will inherit the problem. Fix infrastructure first.
  • Conversion problems sit in the offerIf prices, delivery promises or product information are the weak point, run content and conversion rate optimization work before spending on design.
  • Your Magento version is unsupportedA theme on an outdated core is built on sand. Start with upgrade and security patching.
  • You have no plan for upkeepA custom theme still needs updates when Magento or extensions change. Agree maintenance, for example through Magento maintenance and support.
  • You only want small tweaksColour, font or banner changes do not need a full theme project. Ask us for a small fixed task instead.

Theme collaboration across time zones

Theme projects involve a lot of back and forth, so communication matters as much as code.

Our team in Gulberg III, Lahore, works hours that overlap with the UAE and UK in the morning and with the US east coast in the late afternoon and evening.

Design reviews happen on shared prototypes with written feedback rounds, and short calls fill the gaps.

You always see work in a staging link rather than a screenshot deck.

For Pakistani retailers, theme work often focuses on what local shoppers do: browse on mid-range Android phones over uneven mobile data, pay on delivery, and ask questions on WhatsApp before ordering.

We design for that reality with light pages, a visible WhatsApp contact option, clear delivery and return information near the buy button, and a checkout that does not ask for details a courier does not need.

International brands get the same process with invoicing in USD, a named project lead and weekly progress notes.

We have delivered websites for clients in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Europe, which means we are used to different expectations around accessibility, privacy notices and returns wording.

The related ecommerce website development page explains how we run broader store builds.

Pre-launch theme quality gates

Nothing goes live until these checks pass in staging.

  • Device matrixKey templates reviewed on recent iPhone and Android devices, a tablet and the main desktop browsers, including a throttled mobile connection.
  • Template coverageHome, category, search results, product types, cart, checkout, account pages, CMS pages, error pages and emails all reviewed, not just the showcase pages.
  • Layout stabilityBanners, images and fonts reserve space so content does not jump while loading.
  • Structured data and metadataProduct schema, headings, canonical tags and breadcrumb markup validated with Google's testing tools.
  • Editor experienceSomeone from your team builds a sample landing page in Page Builder to confirm it works without developer help.

Evidence we use to judge a theme

We measure a finished theme against the store before it, using the same tools both times.

That means Core Web Vitals field data where available, lab tests on the main templates, GA4 funnel steps from product view to purchase, and error logs from the browser console.

Where traffic is high enough, we compare conversion behaviour before and after launch and report what changed, including the things that did not move.

You receive a written summary and a short walkthrough call.

We do not publish made-up uplift figures, and we do not promise specific revenue effects, because trading results depend on traffic, pricing, stock and market conditions that a developer does not control.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is the difference between a Magento theme and a child theme?

A parent theme holds the full set of templates and styles, while a child theme inherits from it and contains only your changes. Using a child theme means Magento or parent theme updates do not wipe out your customisation. It is the method we use on almost every project.

Can you customise a theme I already bought?

Yes, provided the theme code is of reasonable quality. We review it first and tell you if the amount of fixing makes a clean rebuild cheaper in the long run. We also check licence terms so we do not modify something you are not permitted to change.

Will a new theme break my extensions?

It can, which is why we test every installed extension during QA. Extensions that output their own markup may need template overrides. If you are considering Hyvä, some will need compatibility modules, so we check this early in discovery.

How do you handle checkout design?

We restyle and simplify the Magento checkout carefully, since payment and tax logic depend on its structure. Where a store needs a more radical change, such as a one-step checkout, we recommend and implement a proven approach and test it with real payments in staging.

Do you build themes for Urdu or Arabic storefronts?

Yes. That includes right-to-left layouts, suitable fonts and checking that search and filters handle the script. We recommend planning it at the design stage.

Can my team edit the theme after you hand it over?

That is the goal. We document components, structure and build commands, and use Page Builder for content areas so editors do not need code. Developers on your side can then extend the theme, or you can retain us through a support arrangement.
