- Track the action that matters to revenue, not every click on the site.
- Google Tag Manager makes tags easier to test and change later.
- Always test with a real submission before spending a rupee on ads.
- Compare Google Ads numbers with your CRM or WhatsApp log each month.
Why tracking comes before spend
Google Ads bidding learns from the conversions you report. If the account records nothing, or records the wrong thing, automated bidding spends toward noise. A form page that counts every visit, or a thank-you page that loads on refresh, will make a weak campaign look strong and a strong one look broken. Tracking is the cheapest part of an ad account to get right and the most expensive to get wrong.
Decide first what counts as a conversion for your business. A clinic may care about booked calls and appointment forms. An online store cares about completed purchases. A software firm may track demo requests. Pick one or two primary actions that stand for revenue, and keep smaller actions such as scrolls or downloads as secondary signals only.
Setting it up in Google Ads and your site
These steps assume a website you can edit. Menu names change over time, so check the current Google Ads help pages if a label differs.
- Define the actionIn Google Ads, open the goals or conversions section and create a new conversion action. Choose website, phone call or import, depending on what you want to measure.
- Name and value it clearlyUse a name your team will understand, like Quote form submit. Assign a value if you can, and mark whether it is a primary or secondary goal.
- Install the tagAdd the Google tag to every page, then add the event snippet to the confirmation page or fire it on the exact event. Google Tag Manager is easier to maintain than pasting code into theme files.
- Link GA4 and turn on enhanced conversionsLinking GA4 lets you compare data sources. Enhanced conversions pass hashed customer details to improve matching, within your privacy policy and consent rules.
- Test before launchSubmit your own form, place a test order, or click your WhatsApp button. Check the tag firing in Tag Manager preview and in the Google Ads conversion status.
- Reconcile after a weekCompare the count in Google Ads with real leads in your inbox, CRM or order system. Investigate any gap.
Choosing how to track each type of conversion
Different businesses capture different events. This table shows the usual route for each.
What you want to count | Common method | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
Contact form | Event on thank-you page or form success | Counting on page load rather than on a real send |
Phone calls from ads | Call extensions or call reporting | Calls that are too short to be genuine |
Phone number click on site | Click event in Tag Manager | Clicks that never become calls |
WhatsApp chat click | Click event on the chat button | Clicks that do not lead to a message |
Online purchase | Ecommerce event with order value | Duplicate orders and cash on delivery refusals |
Qualified lead | Offline conversion import from your CRM | Needs a click ID saved with each lead |
Tracking WhatsApp and cash on delivery in Pakistan
Many Pakistani businesses sell through WhatsApp or take orders on cash on delivery, and a standard tag does not see either outcome fully. A chat button click is only a signal, not a sale. To bring real results back, save the click ID or UTM source with the lead in a sheet or CRM, mark the ones that became customers, and import those outcomes into Google Ads when the volume justifies it.
For stores, a placed order that is refused at the door should not count as revenue. If your platform lets you send order status back, report delivered orders as the strongest conversion. If not, at least review returns each month against the Google Ads number. Our click-to-WhatsApp ads work uses the same discipline on the Meta side.
Common tracking errors and quick fixes
Check each of these before you blame the campaign.
- Duplicate conversionsThe tag fires twice, once from the theme and once from Tag Manager. Remove one.
- Counting page views as leadsMove the trigger from the thank-you page load to the actual success event.
- Several goals set as primaryMicro actions inflate results and steer bidding wrongly. Keep one or two primaries.
- Missing consent handlingIf you serve visitors in the UK or EU, set up consent settings correctly and check the current rules for each market.
- Redirects stripping click dataLanding pages that redirect can lose the click ID. Test the full path.
- No window or value setReview the conversion window and value so reports reflect your sales cycle.
What good tracking lets you do next
Once the basics are sound, the account gets smarter in several ways.
Use automated bidding with confidence
Smart Bidding strategies need steady, accurate conversions. See how this affects broad versus exact match decisions.
Judge campaigns by cost per lead
You can compare ad groups and keywords by outcome, not by clicks.
Feed Performance Max properly
Automation chases whatever you tell it counts. Read what Performance Max is before launching it.
Report honestly
Your numbers can be checked against real enquiries, which builds trust inside the business.
Consent, privacy and honest data
Tracking should respect the people being tracked. If you advertise to visitors in the UK, Europe or other regions with consent rules, a banner that blocks tags until acceptance will reduce the conversions you see, and that is the correct trade-off. Do not try to bypass it. Rules differ by country and change over time, so check the current requirements for each market you serve, and keep your privacy policy in step with what your tags collect.
For Pakistani visitors the rules are lighter today, but the sensible habit is the same: collect only what you need, explain it plainly and avoid passing personal details you do not use. Enhanced conversions hash customer details before sending them, which helps matching without exposing raw data, yet it still needs your policy to say so.
A short test plan for new tags
Treat every new tag like a small release. Open Tag Manager preview, walk through the journey as a customer would, and watch which tags fire on each step. Then check the conversion status in Google Ads, which can take some hours to update. If the status shows no recent conversions after a real test, the tag is not reaching Google, and the usual causes are a blocked script, a wrong trigger or a consent banner that stops tags before the visitor accepts.
Repeat the test on a phone, because most Pakistani visitors arrive on mobile and some themes load forms differently there. Also test from a different network and a private window. A tag that works on your office laptop and fails on a customer's handset is a tag that undercounts. Keep a short log of what you tested and when, so the next person who edits the site knows what to retest.
When to hand this to a specialist
A basic form tag is a task most site owners can handle with some patience. Things get harder with several domains, a checkout on a separate platform, WhatsApp flows, offline imports or consent banners. A mistake there can quietly distort every decision for months, which is why tracking is the first thing we audit in any new account. Our Google Ads audit and optimisation work begins with that review, and the broader Google Ads management services keep it healthy afterward.
