Website speed optimization that makes pages feel instant on ordinary phones

Website speed optimization finds what slows your pages, from heavy images and bloated plugins to weak hosting, and fixes the causes so visitors see content quickly. We do it for site owners whose pages feel sluggish, fail Core Web Vitals or lose enquiries on mobile.

  • Fixes ranked by impact, so effort goes where speed is actually lost

Slow pages cost more than patience

Visitors rarely complain about a slow site. They just leave.

On a phone with a mid-range processor and a variable connection, a page that is merely annoying on office wifi can fail to show anything useful for several seconds. Paid traffic makes it worse, because you pay for the click whether or not the page appears in time.

Speed also affects search. Google has said that page experience, including Core Web Vitals, is among the many signals it uses, and it is rarely the deciding factor when content is weak. But among pages of similar quality, a faster one has the advantage, and speed always affects conversions directly.

The trap is chasing a perfect score in a testing tool. Scores are useful guides, not goals. We aim for pages that load quickly for real users, measured with field data where it exists, and we avoid breaking features such as forms, chat and tracking to gain a few points. With more than 500 websites delivered, we know which fixes are worth doing and which are cosmetic.

Optimisation work we carry out

The exact list follows the audit. These are the areas that most often hold sites back.

  • Performance auditPageSpeed Insights, Search Console Core Web Vitals, waterfall analysis and real-device testing on key templates.
  • Image optimisationCorrect dimensions, compression, modern formats and lazy loading, with the main image on each page prioritised.
  • Code and script clean-upUnused CSS and JavaScript removed, scripts deferred, and third-party tags such as chat and trackers reviewed.
  • Caching and deliveryPage, browser and object caching, plus a CDN where visitors are spread across regions.
  • Hosting and server reviewPHP version, server resources, database and location checked, with a recommendation if the host is the bottleneck.
  • Database clean-upRevisions, expired data and heavy queries cleaned up, especially on older WordPress and WooCommerce sites.
  • Fonts and layout stabilityFont loading tuned and space reserved for images and embeds so the page does not jump.
  • Regression checkForms, checkout, tracking and mobile layouts tested after changes.

Metric
What it measures
Typical causes of a poor result
Largest Contentful Paint
How soon the main content appears
Huge hero images, slow server, render-blocking files
Interaction to Next Paint
How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks
Heavy JavaScript, many third-party scripts
Cumulative Layout Shift
How much the page moves while loading
Images without sizes, late banners, ads and embeds

Third-party scripts and the hidden weight of marketing tags

On many business sites the biggest slowdown is not the theme at all.

It is the pile of tools added over the years: live chat, several analytics tags, heatmaps, social pixels, review widgets, pop-up builders and embedded videos.

Each looks small, but together they compete for the phone's processor and delay the moment a visitor can tap anything.
We list every third-party script, what it is for and who uses its data.

Anything with no owner goes. Tools that are useful but not urgent can load after the main content, or only on the pages where they matter.

Tracking remains accurate because we test conversion events before and after each change, using Google Tag Manager where it helps keep tags organised.

This is a business conversation as much as a technical one.

Sometimes the most valuable fix is a decision, such as removing a pop-up that annoys users or replacing an autoplay hero video with a still image.

We bring the evidence, you decide, and we make the change safely.

Order of work and timeline

We fix the largest causes first, then re-measure before touching anything smaller.

  1. BaselineWe record current lab and field data, and note where the site is weakest by template and device.
  2. Quick winsImage sizes, caching, unused plugins and obvious script problems are dealt with first.
  3. Structural fixesTheme bloat, page builder output, database and hosting limits are addressed where they hold back results.
  4. TestingEvery change is tested on staging, including forms, payments and tracking.
  5. Re-measure and reportWe compare against the baseline after Google's field data has had time to update, which can take weeks.

Platform-specific speed work

Each platform has its own common causes. We also offer deeper services for the largest ones.

WordPress

Plugin sprawl, heavy themes and page builder output. See WordPress speed optimization.

Shopify

Apps injecting scripts, large theme assets and unoptimised images. See Shopify speed optimization.

Magento

Extension overhead, caching setup and server tuning. See Magento speed optimization.

Custom builds

Database queries, asset bundling and server configuration reviewed in code.

Scope, cost and what we cannot control

We quote after the audit.

Cost depends on the platform, the number of template types, the condition of the code, whether hosting needs to change and how many third-party scripts are essential.

Sites built on heavy page builders with many plugins take longer than clean builds.
Some limits are outside our control.

If a business insists on ten tracking tools and a video background, speed has a ceiling. Google's field data also lags, so improvements take time to show.

We explain these limits at the start and never promise a specific score.

For ongoing protection afterwards, consider website maintenance and support, and get in touch for a quote.

Situations where speed is not the problem

Sometimes owners ask for speed work when the real issue is something else.

If traffic is low, the cause is probably content or authority, which is SEO territory.

If visitors load pages quickly but do not enquire, the offer, layout or trust signals need work, which is closer to landing page design.

If the site was built with fixed layouts, responsive web design is the right fix.

We check these possibilities in the audit.

A report that says speed is acceptable and points to a different problem saves you money, and we are happy to write that report.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

What is a good page speed score?

Scores from lab tools vary by test and device, so there is no single number that works for every site. Look at Core Web Vitals field data in Search Console and aim to pass them for the pages that matter, rather than chasing a perfect lab score.

Will faster pages improve my rankings?

They can help, particularly where competing pages are similar in quality. Speed is one signal among many, so do not expect a jump on its own. It does reliably improve user experience and conversions.

Can you speed up a site built with Elementor or another page builder?

Yes. Page builders add code, but careful settings, lean templates and fewer add-ons can make them acceptably fast. In some cases, rebuilding critical templates is the better option.

Do I need to change my hosting?

Only if the server is the bottleneck. We test response times and resource limits first. If hosting is the problem, we recommend options and can handle the migration, including WordPress migration services.

How long until I see results?

Lab test improvements appear immediately after the changes. Search Console field data uses a rolling window, so it can take several weeks to reflect the new speed.
