- SEO, local SEO, PPC, AEO and GEO solve different problems.
- Start with the channel that matches your goal and timeline.
- Answer-focused content helps both search and AI assistants.
SEO: the foundation
Search engine optimisation is the practice of making your website easy for search engines to crawl, understand and rank, and valuable for the people who find it. It covers technical health, content, internal links and authority from other sites. Every other approach in this list builds on it, which is why strong SEO usually improves results elsewhere too. See our SEO agency page for how we apply it.
Local SEO: winning nearby searches
Local SEO focuses on searches with a place attached, such as "dentist near me" or "plumber in Johar Town". It relies on your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details, local pages and proximity. If you serve customers in a city or neighbourhood, this is often the highest-return channel. Compare it with the global approach in local SEO versus global SEO.
PPC: paying for immediate visibility
Pay-per-click advertising, mainly Google Ads and Meta Ads, buys visibility. You bid on keywords or audiences and pay when someone clicks. It delivers traffic quickly, gives fast data about what converts and stops when your budget stops. Many businesses use PPC to learn which keywords matter and SEO to reduce long-term costs. Details are on the PPC agency page.
AEO: answer engine optimisation
AEO aims to make your content the direct answer to a question, whether in featured snippets, voice assistants or AI summaries. It rewards concise, accurate answers placed near the top of a page, clear headings, FAQ sections and structured data. Writing good AEO content tends to make pages clearer for humans as well.
GEO and LLM optimisation: being cited by AI
Generative engine optimisation and LLM optimisation address how large language models and AI search tools find, summarise and cite sources. They emphasise clear entity information, trustworthy mentions across the web, original data or expertise and content that models can quote accurately. No one can guarantee citations, but you can improve the signals. Our AI SEO case studies show examples.
Choosing between SEO, AEO and paid search
Start with the basics: a fast, crawlable site and pages that match what customers search. Add local SEO if you serve a place. Add PPC if you need leads now or want fast learning. Add AEO and GEO work when your content is solid, because those approaches amplify good SEO rather than replace it. For a deeper look at the AI side, read AI SEO versus traditional SEO, or talk to our AI consultant.
A simple example of the six working together
Picture a dental clinic in Lahore. Local SEO gets the clinic into the map pack for "dentist near me". SEO builds treatment pages that rank for "dental implants cost Lahore". PPC puts an ad above both while the organic work matures. AEO shapes each treatment page so that it answers the key questions concisely, and GEO work makes sure the clinic's details, credentials and reviews are consistent enough for AI assistants to describe it correctly when someone asks for a recommendation.
No single tactic does the whole job. Each captures a different moment in the decision, and together they cover the person who is just curious, the person comparing options and the person ready to book.
How search behaves in Pakistan and abroad
Search habits differ by market, but answer-focused content helps everywhere. Our AI consultant page goes further.
Locally
- Mixed-language queries are common
- Maps and WhatsApp matter for local intent
- Voice and Roman Urdu search is growing
Internationally
- AI summaries reduce clicks on simple questions
- Structured, cited content earns mentions
- Brand authority decides who is quoted
Where businesses go wrong
The most common mistake is treating the newer terms as a reason to abandon the basics. Sites with slow pages, missing metadata and thin content gain little from AI-focused tweaks. The second is expecting instant results from AI optimisation. Citations can take time to appear, and measurement is imperfect. The third is copying a competitor's tactics without understanding the audience; a B2B exporter and a restaurant need very different mixes.
A sensible plan assigns each channel a clear job and a metric: PPC for immediate leads, SEO for sustainable traffic, local SEO for map visibility and AEO and GEO for being the cited answer.

How I would choose between these channels
I do not recommend one channel for everyone. If you need enquiries this month, I start with paid search. If you want durable growth, I start with SEO and local SEO and add paid search to cover the gap.
- My suggestion: treat AEO and GEO as extensions of good SEO, not a replacement.
- Make your answers clear and your facts consistent everywhere.
What to do this month
Audit your top ten pages for clear answers near the top, review your Google Business Profile, check that your site loads quickly on mobile and make sure your business name, address and phone match everywhere online. These steps help every approach in this guide, and they cost little. If you want a professional review, our SEO consultant service starts with an audit.
Quick comparison
What each approach is best for.
Approach | Speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|
SEO | Slow, compounding | Lasting visibility |
Local SEO | Medium | Nearby customers |
PPC | Fast | Immediate leads |
AEO / GEO | Emerging | Being cited in answers |
How we handle this for clients
When a business asks which of these to fund, we start with its goal and deadline, then look at what already exists: Search Console data, the Google Business Profile, any Google Ads history and how the brand appears when we ask AI tools about its services. That shows which channel is weakest and which has the most room to grow.
We usually recommend one or two channels to start, not all six, and explain why the others can wait. As work runs, we report each channel on its own terms: enquiries and cost for PPC, map actions for local SEO, organic clicks for SEO and repeated prompt checks for AI mentions. Budget moves only when the data supports it.
