- Local SEO targets nearby customers. Global SEO targets wider markets.
- Keywords and content differ for each.
- Many businesses benefit from both.
What local SEO is
Local SEO helps a business appear in searches tied to a place: "near me", city names and map results. It focuses on your Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, local pages and proximity. It suits businesses that serve customers in a defined area: clinics, restaurants, lawyers, schools, repair services and shops.
What global SEO is
Global, or national and international, SEO aims at searches without a local limit, or across multiple countries. It emphasises site architecture, content depth, authority links and, for several markets, language and country targeting. It suits ecommerce stores, SaaS products, content publishers and exporters.
Key differences
- Signals: local relies on proximity, reviews and citations; global on content, links and authority.
- Competition: local competes with nearby businesses; global competes with everyone.
- Content: local uses location and service pages; global uses topic clusters and guides.
- Time and cost: local can be faster and cheaper; global usually needs sustained investment.
Examples
A dentist in Lahore needs local SEO. A Sialkot manufacturer selling to buyers in Europe needs global SEO, along with a local presence for visitors. An ecommerce store delivering across Pakistan sits in between: national keywords with delivery-area pages. A software company needs global SEO, and perhaps local pages for sales offices.
Can you do both?
Yes. Many businesses combine them. The key is separating the work so that each has its own pages and metrics. Mixing them in the same pages can dilute relevance. See our city pages for Lahore and Sialkot for how this works in practice.
Deciding between local and global targeting
Ask where your customers are and where they will come from. If most come from within a few kilometres, start local. If they come from anywhere, start with global fundamentals. If both, start with local to win quick results while building the global base. Our SEO strategy guide and the SEO consultant service can help you plan.
Keywords and content differences in practice
Local keyword research looks for phrases with place names, "near me" and urgency, and the content answers practical questions: where, when, how much, how to book. Global keyword research looks for topics and problems, and the content explores them in depth, with comparisons, tutorials and original data. A local page might be a short, clear service page with map and reviews. A global page might be a long guide that earns links.
Measuring each approach
For local SEO, measure map-pack positions, profile views, calls, direction requests and form leads. For global SEO, measure organic sessions, rankings for target topics, backlinks earned, leads and revenue attributed to organic traffic. Using the same metrics for both hides what is working. Set up separate reporting views.
Local versus global search conditions
Our Lahore SEO page shows the local approach in practice.
Locally
- Local packs dominate service searches
- Reviews drive clicks
- Local language variants matter
Internationally
- Global rankings need authority
- Country targeting and language setup
- Competition is broader
Budget allocation
If you are a local business, put most of your effort into local SEO and keep global work to a minimum. If you sell online nationally or globally, invest more in content and links, with local work limited to supporting offices. If you do both, begin with whichever has the faster payback and reinvest the gains into the other.

How I decide between local and global
I ask one question: where do your customers live? If they live within an hour of you, local SEO comes first. If you serve many markets, build authority and content as well.
- My suggestion: do not chase global traffic you cannot serve.
- Add markets one at a time.
Common mistakes when mixing local and global SEO
A frequent error is creating dozens of near-identical city pages in the hope of capturing every local search. Google sees these as low-value duplicates, and visitors find them unhelpful. Instead, create a location page only where you have a genuine presence or service, and write something specific about it: the team, the address, the services offered there and local proof such as reviews.
Another mistake is using local signals for a business that actually sells nationwide, which can limit your reach. A third is ignoring local entirely when you have a showroom or office, giving up easy visibility for nearby buyers. Decide the role of each page before you write it.
If you are unsure how to structure the site, a short consultation with a specialist can prevent a costly rebuild later.

How we handle this for clients
When a client is unsure whether they need local or global SEO, we start by asking where their last few dozen customers came from and how they found the business. Then we check Search Console for the countries and cities sending impressions, and look at whether the site has location pages, country targeting or neither. The data often shows a mix the owner had not noticed.
From that we recommend a split: local work on the Business Profile and area pages, broader work on service or product content and links, or both in a set order. If more than one country or language is involved, we plan the folder structure and hreflang before writing content. Reports separate local signals, such as calls and direction requests, from national or international traffic, so each can be judged on its own terms.
