- Meta optimises for the action your objective asks for.
- Leads suits enquiries through forms, calls or messages.
- Sales suits purchases and other website conversions.
- Traffic finds clickers, which is not the same as buyers.
What are the six objectives?
Each objective tells Meta which kind of person to look for.
Objective | What Meta optimises for | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Awareness | Reach, impressions, ad recall | New brand, launch, local presence |
Traffic | Link clicks or landing page views | Content, blogs, cheap visits |
Engagement | Messages, video views, post engagement, some conversions | WhatsApp or Messenger chats, video audiences |
Leads | Form submissions, calls, messages, website leads | Service businesses, B2B, real estate |
App promotion | Installs and in-app events | Mobile apps |
Sales | Purchases and other conversions, catalogue sales | Ecommerce, bookings, paid sign-ups |
How do I match an objective to a business goal?
Start with the action that pays the bills. If a sale happens on your website, that is Sales. If a sale starts with a phone call, a form or a WhatsApp chat, that is usually Leads. If people need to know you exist before anything else works, Awareness has a place, but it should not carry the whole budget.
Then check that Meta can see the action. Sales and website Leads both depend on the pixel and Conversions API reporting the right event. If tracking is broken, the objective cannot do its job, whichever one you choose. For offline sales, such as orders confirmed by phone, plan how those outcomes will be recorded and, where possible, sent back to Meta.
Why does Traffic rarely sell?
The Traffic objective finds people likely to click. Many habitual clickers browse and leave. Meta delivers exactly what you asked for, which is cheap clicks, and the cost per click can look excellent while sales stay flat. Our guide to lowering cost per click explains why cheap clicks are not always the goal.
Traffic has honest uses: sending readers to articles, building a retargeting pool, or testing landing pages when you have no conversion data yet. If what you really want is enquiries or orders, use Leads or Sales and let Meta optimise for that. You will usually pay more per click, but each click is more likely to come from a person who acts.
Leads: forms, calls or messages?
The Leads objective covers several conversion locations. Instant Forms keep people inside Facebook or Instagram. Website leads send people to your own form. Calls connect people to your phone, and messaging sends them to WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct. Each route suits a different kind of business and a different buyer, so the choice is as much about your sales process as about the ad.
Choose the route your sales team can handle well. A team that answers WhatsApp quickly will often do better with messaging than with forms. A business that needs details such as a postcode or budget before calling may prefer a form with qualifying questions. If form quality is a concern, read why lead ads bring low-quality leads.
Sales: purchases and catalogue
The Sales objective optimises for a conversion event, usually a purchase, and supports catalogue ads that show products from your feed. Meta has also brought its automated sales set-up under the Advantage+ name, so a Sales campaign can run as an Advantage+ sales campaign when budget, audience and placement automation are all switched on.
Sales works best with clean purchase tracking, including order value, so Meta can favour people who spend more. It also needs the pixel and Conversions API to report purchases without duplicates. For small stores with few orders, it may help to start with a higher-volume event, as explained in our guide on Learning Limited.
Common objective mistakes
These are the mismatches we see most often in account reviews.
Traffic for ecommerce
Lots of clicks, few orders, because Meta was asked for clicks.
Engagement for brand building
Post likes rarely translate into customers or reach the right people.
Sales without tracking
Meta cannot optimise for purchases it cannot see.
Awareness as the only campaign
Reach without any way to respond leaves no measurable outcome.
Leads with no follow-up plan
Forms fill up, but nobody calls within the hour.
How we handle this for clients
We begin by writing down the one action that matters for the business and where it happens: website, form, phone or chat. We then check tracking for that action before choosing the objective. Only then do we plan campaign structure and budget, using the approach in our guide to setting a Meta Ads budget for a small business.
Each campaign is then reviewed against that action, not against clicks or reach. If the objective and the business goal drift apart, for example when a client adds a new service, we change the campaign rather than forcing the old one to fit. Full set-up and ongoing work run under our Meta Ads management service.
Pakistan, Gulf and UK advertisers
In Pakistan, many orders start in a WhatsApp chat and finish with cash on delivery. For these businesses, Leads or Engagement with a messaging destination often fits better than Sales, because the website never sees the order. Record confirmed orders and, where possible, send them back to Meta as offline events.
Gulf shoppers often pay online, so Sales works well for ecommerce in the UAE and Saudi Arabia when checkout tracking is clean. Cash on delivery is still common in parts of the Gulf, so confirm how orders are recorded. In the UK, card payments and fast delivery make Sales the default for online stores, with Leads for services and B2B.
