How do I create a lookalike audience on Meta, and make it worth the spend?

In Ads Manager, open Audiences, choose Create Audience, then Lookalike. Select a source (customers, leads or pixel events), pick the country you sell in and a size, and save. The source matters most: a list of real buyers beats a list of page likes every time.

Key takeaways
  • Your source audience decides quality. Use buyers or qualified leads, not casual engagers.
  • Start narrow, then widen only when delivery or cost forces you to.
  • Always exclude existing customers so you do not pay to reach people you already have.
  • Test two or three sources side by side instead of trusting one guess.

What a lookalike audience really does

A lookalike audience is Meta's attempt to find people who resemble a group you already know. You hand over a source, such as your customer list, and Meta's system looks for users in your chosen country whose behaviour and profile data resemble the people in that source. It does not copy names. It finds patterns you could never spot by hand.

The idea is old, but the platform keeps changing how much control you have. Meta now pushes broader targeting through its Advantage+ audience options, and in many accounts a lookalike is treated as a suggestion rather than a hard boundary. Check the current wording in your own Ads Manager, because menus and defaults move often. The principle stays the same: the better your source, the better the starting point you give the algorithm.

Building the audience in Ads Manager

The clicks take five minutes. The thinking beforehand takes longer and matters more.

  1. Prepare a clean sourceExport buyers or qualified leads from Shopify, WooCommerce, your CRM or a WhatsApp enquiry sheet. Use email and phone number columns, remove duplicates and test numbers, and keep the file to real customers.
  2. Create a custom audience firstIn Audiences choose Create Audience, then Custom Audience, and upload the file or pick pixel and Conversions API events. A lookalike can only be as good as the custom audience beneath it.
  3. Choose LookalikeGo back to Create Audience, select Lookalike, and pick your custom audience as the source. Meta will warn you if the source is too small to produce a useful match.
  4. Set location and sizeChoose the country where you actually sell. Start with the narrowest size, which gives the closest match, and create wider versions as separate audiences so you can compare them.
  5. Exclude people you already haveIn the ad set, add your customer list and recent purchasers as exclusions. This single step prevents a surprising amount of waste.
  6. Launch and give it timeRun the ad set long enough for Meta to leave its learning phase before you judge it. Constant edits reset that process and muddy the result.

Choosing the right source list

Different businesses have different best sources. This table shows which ones tend to give the strongest signal.

Source

Best for
Paying customers
Strongest
Stores and services with a customer list
High-value or repeat buyers
Very strong
Brands that want better buyers, not more buyers
Qualified leads from your CRM
Strong
Clinics, real estate, B2B and education
Pixel or API purchase events
Strong
Stores with tracking installed properly

Medium
When purchases are too few to form a source
Page or profile engagers

Source size, quality and country

Meta needs a minimum number of people in a source before it will build a lookalike, and a larger, cleaner source usually gives it more to learn from. Check the minimum shown in your account, since it can change. If you have only a handful of buyers, a purchase-based lookalike will be shaky. Use a broader signal, such as leads or checkout starters, until you have collected more real customers.

Country selection trips up many Pakistani advertisers. A source that is mostly Pakistani buyers works best when you target Pakistan. If you sell to the UK, UAE or US from Lahore, feed the lookalike with customers from that market where you can. A Lahore-based list used to target Canada will often produce a vague match, because buying behaviour differs by country.

Think about quality inside the list as well. A source of ten thousand low-value, one-time discount buyers will teach Meta to find more discount buyers. If your goal is premium customers, build the source from your best ones instead, even if it is smaller.

Before you press publish

A short review catches most of the avoidable problems.

  • Source is real buyers or qualified leadsNot everyone who ever clicked a post.
  • List is cleanNo duplicates, test entries or refunded and fraudulent orders.
  • Country matches the offerDelivery area, currency and language all line up.
  • Existing customers are excludedUse a fresh customer list, updated regularly.
  • Tracking worksCheck the Meta Pixel and Conversions API in Events Manager, as covered in our Meta Pixel versus Conversions API guide.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

These are the problems we see most often when we audit accounts.

Using page fans as the source

Fans are often people who liked a giveaway. Replace the source with buyers or leads.

Stacking every size at once

Ad sets overlap and compete. Run the narrow one first, then test wider ones separately.

Judging in two days

Early numbers are noisy. Wait for delivery to stabilise before changing anything.

Never refreshing the list

A source from last year misses your newest, best customers. Update it on a schedule.

Ignoring creative fatigue

A good audience can look bad when the ad is tired. See how to stop Meta ads fatigue.

Expecting miracles on a weak offer

A lookalike cannot rescue a poor landing page or unclear price.

Lookalikes, retargeting and broad targeting together

A lookalike is a prospecting tool. It reaches new people, which is different from retargeting, where you speak to visitors who already know you. A healthy account usually runs both: lookalike or broad audiences to bring in fresh people, and retargeting of website visitors to bring them back. If you are only doing one, you are probably leaving money on the table.

You should also test lookalikes against broad targeting, where you give Meta almost no audience instructions and let your creative and conversion data do the work. On accounts with solid tracking, broad sometimes matches or beats a lookalike. On accounts with sparse data, a good lookalike still gives the system a head start. Run the test, compare cost per qualified lead or sale, and keep whichever one wins in your market.

If budget is tight, our note on lowering your cost per click on Meta ads covers what to adjust before you add more audiences.

When to get help

If you have fewer than a few hundred real customers, broken tracking or a catalogue that changes daily, audience building turns into guesswork. That is when a short audit is cheaper than another month of wasted spend. Our Meta ads management team builds the sources, checks the tracking and reports on leads and sales, and you can see how that looks in practice in our Meta ads case studies. When you are ready, contact us and share what you sell, where, and what a customer is worth to you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

How many people do I need in my source audience?

Meta sets a minimum, and it can change, so check the figure shown when you create the lookalike. In practice a larger and cleaner list of real customers gives better results than a minimum-size list padded with weak contacts.

Should I use a narrow or wide lookalike?

Start narrow because it matches your source more closely, then test wider versions as separate audiences if delivery slows or costs climb. A wider audience reaches more people but each person resembles your customers less.

Do lookalike audiences still work with Advantage+ audience?

Yes, though Meta may treat your lookalike as a suggestion rather than a limit. Test it against a broad audience on your own account and judge by cost per qualified lead or sale, not by reach.

Can I build a lookalike from my WhatsApp enquiries?

Yes, if you can export the phone numbers or email addresses of people who enquired and bought. Keep the file to real customers. Our click-to-WhatsApp ads service shows how those enquiries can be tracked back to ads.

How often should I refresh the source list?

Update it whenever you have a meaningful batch of new customers, which for many businesses means monthly or quarterly. A stale list teaches the system about the customers you had, not the ones you have now.
