- Break-even ROAS equals one divided by your profit margin on the sale.
- A strong ROAS on a thin margin can still lose money.
- Platform ROAS and real ROAS often differ, so compare with your own sales records.
- Judge over a long enough window and include repeat purchases where they matter.
ROAS in plain language
Return on ad spend is revenue from ads divided by the money spent on them. If you spend one unit and the ads are credited with four units of sales, ROAS is four. It tells you how hard each unit of ad money is working, but it says nothing about profit on its own. Revenue is not profit, and a business can have a fine ROAS and still lose money once product cost, delivery, returns, staff and payment fees are counted.
That is why a universal 'good ROAS' is a myth. A brand with high margins can be happy at a low figure. A reseller on thin margins may need a much higher one just to stay even. The right target is personal to your business, and it is simple to calculate.
Calculate your break-even and target ROAS
Do this with your real costs, in whatever currency you sell.
- Find your contribution marginTake the selling price and subtract product cost, delivery, packaging, payment fees and returns allowance. What is left, as a share of the price, is your margin.
- Compute break-even ROASDivide one by that margin share. If your margin is a quarter, you need four times your ad spend in revenue just to break even.
- Add your profit goalDecide how much profit you want from ads. A higher target ROAS follows. Build in room for overhead that the margin did not cover.
- Check the sales windowMeta credits sales within an attribution window you choose. Match it to how long your buyers take to decide.
- Compare with real salesReconcile platform numbers against your shop orders or bank records for the same days.
What changes the ROAS you can reach
These factors explain why two stores with the same spend see different results.
Factor | Effect on ROAS | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
Product margin | Sets your floor | Review pricing, bundles, shipping charges |
Average order value | Raises revenue per click | Add bundles and free-shipping thresholds |
Conversion rate of the site | Multiplies everything | Fix speed, trust and checkout friction |
Audience temperature | Warm visitors convert better | Separate prospecting from retargeting |
Creative quality | Drives click quality | Test new angles often |
Repeat purchase rate | Raises true lifetime return | Use email and WhatsApp follow-up |
Why the number in Ads Manager can mislead you
Meta's reported ROAS depends on its attribution settings and on how well your tracking works. Browser privacy changes, blocked cookies and incomplete event data can cause purchases to go unreported or to be credited to a different channel. Setting up server-side events helps, as explained in our guide to Meta's Conversions API. The opposite error also occurs: a retargeting campaign can claim credit for sales that would have happened anyway.
The practical fix is to look at blended numbers too. Compare total ad spend for the month with total revenue and profit from all sources. If the platform says your ads are great but your bank balance disagrees, believe the bank balance and investigate. Cash on delivery adds another wrinkle in Pakistan, because orders that are never accepted or are returned should be removed from the revenue you divide.
Ways to improve ROAS, in order of effect
Start at the top. The biggest levers are usually not the ad settings.
- Improve the offerPrice, delivery terms and reviews affect conversions more than most bid settings.
- Fix the websiteA slow mobile page wastes every click. Check speed and checkout first.
- Increase average order valueBundles and thresholds raise revenue without raising ad cost.
- Separate prospecting and retargetingRead each on its own numbers. See how to retarget website visitors.
- Rotate creativeTired ads lose efficiency. Our guide on stopping fatigue explains how.
- Tighten trackingGive Meta clean purchase data so it can optimise correctly.
Common ROAS mistakes
Avoid these before you cut or raise a budget.
- Copying a target from a blogSomeone else's margin is not yours.
- Ignoring returns and failed deliveriesThey shrink real revenue.
- Judging too earlyLearning periods distort early figures. See how long to let a campaign run.
- Chasing a high ROAS by starving spendA tiny budget can show a great ratio and produce little profit in total.
- Forgetting lifetime valueA first sale at break-even can be fine if customers reorder.
Prospecting and retargeting need different targets
One blended ROAS hides two very different jobs. Prospecting reaches people who have never heard of you, so its return is naturally lower. Retargeting reaches warm visitors, so its return looks excellent but depends on the prospecting that fed it. If you cut prospecting because its ROAS looks weak, the retargeting pool dries up and total sales fall a few weeks later.
Set a lower acceptable ROAS for cold traffic and a higher one for warm, and judge the pair together against your break-even figure. Many owners are surprised to find their best-looking campaign is just harvesting demand created elsewhere.
Example margin logic with no numbers attached
How different businesses should think about the target.
Business type | Margin situation | How to set the target |
|---|---|---|
Fashion brand with own production | Healthy, but high returns | Count returns, aim above break-even with room |
Reseller of branded electronics | Thin margin | Needs a high ROAS or a low-cost offer |
Digital product or course | Very high margin | Focus on cost per sale and refund rate |
Subscription service | Low first order, long value | Judge on lifetime value, accept break-even at first |
Service business taking enquiries | No direct sale online | Use cost per qualified lead instead |
A Pakistan and export-seller view
For Pakistani stores selling locally, cash on delivery and return rates shape the true margin more than any ad setting. Count only delivered, paid orders against spend. For sellers exporting to the USA, UK or UAE, add shipping time, duties handled by the buyer or by you, and currency conversion costs to the margin.
We run Meta campaigns for shops from Lahore with reporting based on your real sales, not only the platform's. If you sell products, our Meta ecommerce and catalog ads work is built around margin-based targets. When you are ready to try the new automated formats, read what Advantage+ Shopping campaigns are.
