- No universal number exists; the benchmark is the pages ranking for your keyword.
- Count referring websites and their quality, not the total number of links.
- Some pages rank with few links because the content and site authority are strong.
- Cheap bulk links add risk and rarely help.
Why a single number does not exist
Ask five people how many backlinks do I need to rank on page 1 and you will hear five answers, usually tied to a case they remember. That is because link needs vary by keyword. A search for a niche local service may need very little outside support, while a competitive global term can be dominated by sites with years of earned links.
Google also looks at far more than links. Relevance, the quality of the page, how well it satisfies the search, internal linking and the overall reputation of the site all contribute. Links remain one of the stronger signals, which is why our lesson on whether backlinks still matter is worth reading, but they work alongside everything else.
How to estimate your own gap
This method gives you a realistic target for one keyword, not a guess.
- Search the keywordOpen an incognito window, use the country you target, and note the top ten results. Ignore directories and giant brands if you cannot compete with them directly.
- List the comparable pagesChoose the pages from sites similar to yours in size and age. These show what is realistic.
- Check each page's referring domainsUse a backlink tool of your choice and record the number of unique referring websites pointing to the exact page and to the domain.
- Judge qualityLook at whether those links come from relevant, genuine sites, such as industry publications, suppliers, local organisations and respected blogs.
- Compare with your pageIs the difference in links, in content depth, or in site trust? Be honest. Often the page is simply weaker.
- Set a planDecide how many relevant links you can realistically earn over the next quarter, and how you will improve the page at the same time.
Link quality signals worth checking
One good link can outweigh many weak ones. Use these signs to judge.
Signal | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
Relevance | Same industry or audience | Unrelated topic or language |
Source site | Real traffic and editorial standards | Link farm, thin pages, paid network |
Placement | Inside useful content | Footer, sidebar or comment spam |
Anchor text | Natural, varied wording | Exact-match keywords repeated |
Growth pattern | Gradual, mixed sources | Sudden spikes from one place |
Ways to earn links that hold up
None of these are fast, but they age well.
Useful resources
Original guides, data you collected yourself or tools people want to reference. Our word count lesson helps you decide the depth.
Real relationships
Suppliers, associations, chambers of commerce and partners who already know your business.
Digital PR and expert quotes
Commentary on topics where you hold genuine experience, offered to journalists and bloggers.
Local and industry mentions
Event sponsorships, university partnerships and local directories that are real and relevant.
Mistakes that waste money or create risk
The first is buying packages that promise a set number of links per month. They tend to come from low-quality networks, and Google's systems are designed to ignore or discount manipulative links. In the worst cases they cause manual action that takes months to repair, as our guide to recovering from a Google penalty describes.
The second is chasing links to weak pages. If a page does not match what people want, links will not rescue it. Improve the page first, then support it. The third is ignoring internal links, which cost nothing and often move rankings further than a handful of outside ones. Our link building services always begin with the page and its internal support.
Link building realities from Pakistan
For local Pakistani businesses, a handful of relevant links from local publications, trade bodies, supplier sites and genuine directories can matter more than dozens from abroad. Language and geography count, so a link from a respected Urdu or English site in your market carries relevance that a random foreign blog does not.
If you target the US, UK or UAE, build links from sites in those markets and in your industry. We handle outreach for such campaigns remotely from Lahore, with communication timed to your working day. Be wary of anyone who offers a bulk Pakistani guest post list; that is usually the kind of pattern search engines discount.
Before you build a single link
Links amplify a good page. Confirm these first.
- The page matches the searchOpen the top results and ask whether your page answers the same question as well or better.
- Internal links point to itLink from related pages with descriptive anchors, so the page is not an orphan.
- Tracking is in placeSearch Console and GA4 should show you impressions, clicks and conversions before and after.
- The site is crawlableTechnical blockers cancel link value, so check the technical basics first.
- You have something worth linkingA guide, tool, data set or service page with a clear point of view gives people a reason to link.
- You can afford to waitLink effects build slowly. Plan for months of consistent work, not a single push.

Junaid's take
In my experience, owners ask this question when they hope for a shortcut. The honest answer is that the number is whatever your competitors have earned, and the better question is whether your page deserves to be linked to.
I would audit the top results, fix the page, build internal links, and then earn a modest number of strong relevant links. I would track progress in reports I can verify, and I would walk away from any provider who sells a link count as the product.
