  4. Do Backlinks Still Matter for SEO in 2026?

Do backlinks still matter for SEO in 2026? Yes, but not the way sellers say

Yes. Links from other websites remain one of the ways search engines judge which pages deserve trust, especially for competitive searches. But a few relevant, earned links outweigh hundreds of cheap ones, and bought link packages carry real risk. Content, technical health and intent still decide how much a link can help.

By Junaid Tariq Updated October 2026

Key takeaways
  • Links still help, particularly where competition is high.
  • One relevant link from a respected site beats many weak ones.
  • Paid and network links break Google's spam policies and put the site at risk.
  • Local and low-competition searches may need very few links to rank.

How to earn links without buying them

This is slower than a package, and far more durable.

  1. Start with link-worthy pagesOriginal guides, tools, data you gathered, templates and clear explanations. People link to pages that save them effort.
  2. Find who already links to rivalsUse a link tool to see which sites link to competitors on your topic. Those sites understand the subject and may link to a better resource.
  3. Use your real relationshipsSuppliers, clients, associations, universities and event organisers can link to you if you give them a reason and a ready description.
  4. Pitch useful additionsWrite short, personal emails that explain what your page adds to theirs. Generic mass outreach is ignored.
  5. Recover what you already earnedFix broken pages that have links, redirect old URLs and ask sites to correct a missing link when your brand is already mentioned.
  6. Measure and repeatTrack referring domains, not only total links. Check whether the pages that gained links also gained impressions.

How to judge a link before you chase it

Run through these questions for every prospect.

  • Is the site relevant to yours?Links from related industries and regions carry meaning. A random site in an unrelated field does not.
  • Does it have real readers?Look for genuine content, recent updates and some traffic, not only a metric score.
  • Will the link sit in useful context?A link inside a relevant paragraph is better than one in a footer or sidebar list.
  • Is it a free or earned placement? If money changed hands, the link should be tagged sponsored, which Google asks for, and it will not help the same way.
  • Would you want the link if Google did not exist?A good test. If it sends visitors who might become customers, it is worth having.
  • Does the site sell links openly?Pages that advertise paid placement for any buyer are a warning.

Mistakes that cost money and rankings

Most link problems are created by well-meaning owners trying to catch up.

Buying packages by count

Offers like a set number of links per month encourage low-quality placement. Ask for a list of real sites and what they are worth.

Chasing a score

Raising a metric such as domain authority is not the aim. Read what a good domain authority score is before trusting one.

Using exact-match anchors everywhere

A natural profile has brand names, URLs and varied phrases, not one money keyword repeated.

Ignoring on-site quality

Links to a thin or slow page will not carry it. Fix the page first.

Neglecting internal links

Your own pages pass authority to each other. Link important pages from related content.

Skipping the audit

Old links from past providers can be a liability. See how to recover from a Google penalty if you suspect trouble.

Junaid’s take, from experience

Junaid's take

In my experience, the businesses that gain the most from links are those with something worth citing and a few real relationships. The ones who gain nothing are the ones who treat links like a purchase order.

If your pages already match the search and your site is technically sound, links are often the next lever for competitive terms. If your pages are thin, slow or off target, fix them first. And for most local searches, I would put reviews, your Business Profile and good service pages ahead of any link campaign.

When you assess any offer, ask to see the sites. If the seller will not name them, the answer is no. If you want a link plan built around what your market can realistically earn, our SEO agency team can start with a review. You can also contact us directly.

One more practical habit: keep a simple sheet of every link you earn, with the date, source, target page and how it came about. After a year you will know which kinds of outreach work in your market, and you will have a record if you ever need to explain your profile to a reviewer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Are backlinks a ranking factor?

Google has confirmed that links are among the signals its systems use. Their weight varies by search, and the systems try to discount manipulated links.

How many backlinks do I need to rank?

There is no number. Look at the pages ranking for your target search and compare their referring domains with yours. For many local searches, few links are needed.

Are nofollow links useless?

Not entirely. Google treats nofollow, sponsored and ugc attributes as hints. They can still send visitors, build brand awareness and fit a natural profile.

Is guest posting still safe?

It is when you write for a real publication with real readers and the link is relevant. Mass guest post networks built for links are the problem.

Do links from social media count?

Social links rarely pass ranking value directly, but they can lead to people who later link to you. Treat social as a way to be found.
