Click-to-WhatsApp ads: setup and best practices for businesses that sell in chat

Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a WhatsApp chat with your business when someone taps the ad on Facebook or Instagram. The setup is simple: link your WhatsApp number to your Page, choose messages as the destination and write a clear first reply. Results depend on how fast and how well your team answers.

Key takeaways
  • Link the WhatsApp number to your Facebook Page before building the ad.
  • A prefilled message and a short welcome reply raise the chance of a real conversation.
  • Reply speed and a clear next step matter more than ad cleverness.
  • Track conversations and sales, not only the number of chats started.

Why chat-based ads suit this market

In Pakistan, WhatsApp is often where a purchase is actually decided. People ask about price, delivery, size, availability or a clinic appointment, and they expect an answer in a chat, not a form submission followed by a call two days later. Click-to-WhatsApp ads fit that behaviour. Instead of sending traffic to a website that may load slowly and ask for personal details, you send the person straight into the channel where they already talk to shops.

This format works best for businesses with questions to answer before a sale: clothing and home goods with sizing or colour queries, clinics and salons with booking, education and travel with several options, and B2B suppliers whose buyers want a quote. It works less well for impulse products with a fixed price and a one-click checkout, where a normal conversion ad to a good store page may be simpler.

One caution. Chat ads move the work from your website to your team. If nobody is available to reply, you have bought expensive silence.

Setting up a click-to-WhatsApp campaign

The sequence below works for most small and mid-size advertisers.

  1. Prepare the WhatsApp accountDecide between the WhatsApp Business app and the Business Platform. The app suits small teams with one phone. The platform suits larger volumes, several agents and automation, usually through a provider.
  2. Link it to your PageIn Meta Business settings or the Page settings, connect the WhatsApp number to your Facebook Page and, if you wish, to your Instagram account. Ads will not offer WhatsApp as a destination until this is done.
  3. Choose the campaign objectivePick an objective that matches your goal, such as sales or leads with messaging as the conversion location. Check current Ads Manager options, since labels change.
  4. Select WhatsApp as the destinationAt ad set or ad level, choose WhatsApp as the place people will be sent. Set the audience, placements and budget as you would for any campaign.
  5. Write the ad and the prefilled messageThe ad creates the interest. The prefilled message, for example a line asking about a product, tells your team what the person saw.
  6. Set the welcome message and quick repliesAdd a short greeting and two or three buttons for common questions. Keep it helpful, not a wall of text.
  7. Test end to endClick your own ad on a phone, send the message and confirm that the right person sees it. Do this before spending real money.

Writing the first message and the reply flow

The first thing a person sees is the greeting you configured, and the first thing you see is their prefilled message. Make both short. A good greeting says who you are, answers the likely question and offers a next step. For a furniture shop, that might be a friendly line followed by buttons for catalogue, delivery areas and talking to a person.

Avoid dumping a price list at once. Ask one qualifying question, such as the city or the product they want, then give a relevant answer. This keeps the exchange human and gives your team data for follow-up. Plan for repeat questions with saved replies, but edit them so they do not sound pasted.

Decide office hours and say so. An away message that states when you will reply is better than silence. If you serve customers abroad, remember that our own team in Lahore overlaps with UK, UAE and Gulf business hours, and the same logic applies to your chat coverage. Best practices that move results

Habits we see in accounts that turn chats into customers.

Reply fast

Aim for minutes during business hours. Chats cool quickly, and the person may message a competitor next.

Use a clear promise in the ad

If the ad says consultation, the chat should start there. Mismatch confuses people and wastes the click.

Show real people and products

Authentic photos and short videos tend to feel safer than stock images in a chat-first journey.

Use WhatsApp-friendly creative

Square and vertical formats suit mobile. Keep the text readable on a small screen. See which creative formats perform best.

Tag and follow up

Label chats as new, interested, quoted or won, so you can follow up with people who went quiet.

Send sales back to Meta

Where possible, send qualified chats and sales back as events so the algorithm learns who buys. This relates to Pixel and Conversions API tracking.

Tracking, costs and policy basics

Meta reports conversations started, and that is a start, not a result. A person can open a chat and never write again. Count the chats that reach a real question, then the quotes sent, then the sales. A simple sheet or a CRM works. Our post on WhatsApp plus CRM explains how to connect the two.

WhatsApp has its own pricing rules for business messages, and Meta has offered free entry points for conversations that begin from ads. The rules change, so check Meta's current documentation before you budget, and do not rely on a blog post, including this one, for rates.

Respect consent and policy. Do not message people who have not opted in, do not send bulk promotions from a personal number, and avoid claims that your ad category does not permit. Health, finance and education advertisers should read the platform's current rules. Accounts that spam get restricted, and a banned number can stop your business overnight.

Mistakes to avoid

The same problems appear again and again.

  • No one assigned to chatsDefine who answers, when, and what happens at night.
  • Sending to a personal numberUse a business number you can hand over if a staff member leaves.
  • Over-automationA bot that traps people in menus frustrates buyers. Always offer a way to reach a person.
  • Judging by chat countMany chats and no sales usually mean the wrong audience or a weak offer.
  • Ignoring unanswered chatsReview stale conversations weekly and follow up politely.
  • Skipping testsMessage your own ad from a clean phone before launching.

Who should answer, and how a good chat runs

The biggest operational question is staffing. A solo owner can handle a modest number of chats a day on the Business app, but every extra campaign dollar adds conversations. Decide in advance who covers mornings, evenings and weekends, and agree a handover when one person is busy. If you use the Business Platform, set routing rules so chats about different products or cities reach the right agent.

A good chat has a rhythm. The person asks, you answer briefly, you ask one question back, you share the relevant detail, and you propose the next step: a visit, a payment link, a delivery slot or a call. For a clinic, the next step is an appointment. For a store, it is the order and delivery address. For a B2B supplier, it is the quote request with quantity and destination. Write these paths out on one page so every agent follows the same flow.

Keep a record of the questions that come up most. They tell you what your ads and website fail to explain, and fixing those gaps improves every channel, including your social media lead generation work.

Junaid’s take, from experience

Junaid's take: treat chat as a sales desk

In my experience, click-to-WhatsApp is the most underused format for Pakistani service and retail businesses, and the most mishandled. The ad part is easy. The hard part is that you have now opened a sales desk and must staff it.

If I were starting, I would run one simple campaign with a clear offer, make sure two people can reply, and measure the share of chats that reach a quote. Only after that works would I add chatbots or the Business Platform. Automation should remove repetitive work, not replace the conversation that closes the sale.

If lead forms are not producing buyers for you, chat may do better, but it will not rescue a weak offer. For a wider view of formats, read our guide on running lead generation ads on Facebook and Instagram, or contact us and we will review your account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

Do I need WhatsApp Business API for click-to-WhatsApp ads?

No. The WhatsApp Business app can receive chats from ads, which suits small teams. The Business Platform becomes useful when you need several agents, automation or CRM integration.

Can I run these ads without a website?

Yes, because the destination is a chat. A website still helps with trust, and people often check it before messaging, so keep a simple, accurate one.

How do I know if the ads are working?

Track conversations that become qualified enquiries and sales, not only chats started. Tag chats in the Business app or CRM, and compare against ad spend each week.

Are click-to-WhatsApp ads cheaper than lead forms?

Sometimes the cost per conversation is lower, but compare cost per sale. Cheap chats that never convert are not cheaper. The answer depends on your offer and reply speed.

Can you manage the ads and the chat setup for us?

Yes. Our Meta ads management and WhatsApp marketing for leads teams handle the campaign, templates and reporting.
