- AEO and GEO aim to get your brand cited inside AI answers, not only ranked in a list.
- Strong SEO, clear structure and trustworthy sources remain the base.
- Direct answers, consistent facts and entity clarity make content easier to quote.
- Measure mentions and referrals, but expect imperfect data.
Where the terms come from
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation, and GEO for generative engine optimisation. People use them loosely, and the boundaries are not formal. Both describe preparing content so that systems which write answers, rather than list pages, will use and name you as a source.
The behaviour is changing quickly and the platforms rarely explain exactly how they choose sources. Treat any claim of a proven formula with caution. What is observable is that these systems tend to favour clear, well-structured, factual pages from sources that appear reliable across the web.
Traditional SEO next to AI search work
The overlap is large. Asked how AI search is different from SEO, the honest answer is that the differences are mostly in emphasis and measurement.
Area | Traditional SEO | AI search (AEO/GEO) |
|---|---|---|
Goal | Rank and earn clicks | Be cited or recommended in an answer |
Unit of competition | The page | The passage, fact or brand entity |
Content style | Complete, keyword-aware pages | Direct answers, clear definitions, quotable facts |
Trust signals | Links, content, site quality | Consistent mentions and authorship across the web |
Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Citations, brand mentions, referral traffic |
Certainty | Established reporting | Patchy and changing data |
Preparing a site for AI answers
These steps are good SEO anyway, so little is wasted if the platforms change.
- Keep the foundation strongPages must be crawlable and indexable, since AI features draw on search indexes. Review your technical basics first.
- Answer questions directlyPut a short, accurate answer near the top of the page, then expand. Use headings that match real questions customers ask.
- Make facts consistentBusiness name, services, location, authors and key claims should match across your site, profiles and listings.
- Show who is behind the contentNamed authors, credentials you can verify and honest sourcing support trust. Our note on E-E-A-T covers how to show it.
- Add structured data where it fitsMarkup for organisation, articles, products and FAQs helps machines read the page, though it is not a guarantee of citation.
- Earn mentions elsewhereReviews, press, industry sites and communities that discuss your brand give systems more evidence that you exist and matter.
What changes in practice, and what does not
Keep a clear head about the hype.
Still true
People want accurate, useful answers from trustworthy sources. Pages that deliver that remain the base of visibility.
Changing
Some searches end without a click, so brand recognition and being named count more than before.
Overstated
Claims that SEO is dead. Search engines still send large volumes of traffic, and AI features still depend on indexed web content.
Unknown
Exact selection rules for each platform. Test and observe, and avoid any provider who sells certainty.
Habits that backfire with AI visibility
Do not rewrite everything for machines. Text stuffed with stiff question-and-answer patterns reads badly and does not help people. Do not publish bulk AI-written pages either; they add noise and risk quality problems, as covered in our core update lesson.
Do not hide key facts inside images, tabs or scripts that crawlers may not read. And do not ignore the classic channels while chasing the new one. Rankings, local profiles and sound content still drive most qualified demand, and our AI SEO, AEO and GEO services treat them as one programme.
Why it matters for Pakistani and export businesses
Buyers abroad increasingly ask AI tools to shortlist vendors. A Lahore software house or agency that is mentioned consistently, with clear service pages and verifiable credentials, has a better chance of appearing in those shortlists. Vague one-line service pages and unclear location details lose out.
For local businesses in Pakistan, search in English, Urdu and Roman Urdu is mixed, and AI features handle Urdu with varying quality. Publish clear English pages and, where your customers use it, accurate Urdu content. Keep your Google Business Profile correct, because local facts feed many answers.
Content formats that are easy to quote
Use these on pages where a direct answer genuinely helps the reader.
- Definition boxesOne or two plain sentences that define a term, placed directly under the heading that asks about it.
- Comparison tablesShort rows with clear labels let both people and machines pull out differences.
- Step listsNumbered steps with one action each are simple to summarise accurately.
- Original specificsA named method, a documented process or a clear policy gives a system something distinct to attribute to you.
- Dated updatesReviewing and refreshing key pages shows that facts are maintained. Avoid pretending to update when nothing changed.
- Clear author and business detailsPeople and systems both look for who stands behind an answer.

Junaid's take
In my experience, AI search is being sold as a revolution by people with a service to pitch. The reality is closer to an extension: the sites that win are those that were already clear, factual and trusted.
If I were advising a business today, I would fix the SEO basics, write pages that answer real questions in plain words, make the brand and facts consistent everywhere, and track brand mentions next to organic traffic. I would not pay for a package that promises citations.
