Why Your Website Is Not Getting Traffic From Google (and How to Fix It)

Your website is probably not getting traffic from Google because of one of ten common problems: pages not indexed, a new domain, keywords that are too competitive, content that misses search intent, thin pages, technical faults, no authority, weak internal links, a penalty or no tracking. Check indexing first, then work through each cause in order.

Key takeaways
  • Check indexing first.
  • Match keywords to real intent.
  • Thin or duplicate content rarely ranks.

1. Google has not indexed your pages

Search for site:yourdomain.com. If few pages appear, check Search Console for indexing errors, noindex tags and robots.txt blocks. Submit your sitemap and ensure important pages are linked internally.

2. Your site is new

New domains take time to be discovered and trusted. Build pages for specific searches, earn some links and be patient. Local profiles and directories can bring visibility sooner.

3. You target keywords that are too competitive

If your pages compete with large brands for broad terms, you will not rank. Target specific, long-tail queries where you can offer the best answer, then expand.

4. Your content does not match search intent

Look at the results for your target query. If they are product pages and you wrote a blog post, or the reverse, Google sees a mismatch. Rewrite to match the format and depth users expect.

5. Content is thin or duplicated

Short, generic or copied pages rarely rank. Add original information, examples and structure. Merge overlapping pages and remove those with no value.

6. Technical problems

Slow speed, mobile issues, broken links, redirect loops and messy site architecture hold sites back. Run a crawl and test key pages. See how to fix technical SEO issues.

7. No authority

If competitors have more trustworthy links and mentions, Google may prefer them. Earn references through useful content, PR, partnerships and local involvement. Avoid purchased links.

8. Poor internal linking

Pages that are not linked from other pages are hard to discover and appear unimportant. Link from relevant pages with descriptive anchor text.

9. You were penalised or hit by an update

Check Search Console for manual actions and compare traffic drops with known update dates. Remedies depend on the cause: improve quality, remove spam or clean up links. A free disavow generator can help if toxic links are the issue.

10. You are not tracking or improving

SEO is ongoing. Without monitoring and iteration, opportunities are missed. If you want a professional diagnosis, our SEO agency offers an audit, and the SEO solution guide gives a structured approach.

A one-hour diagnostic routine

Spend ten minutes checking indexing with Search Console and site search. Spend ten minutes testing speed and mobile usability on your main templates. Spend ten minutes reviewing your top landing pages and their queries. Spend ten minutes comparing your target page with the top three results for intent and depth. Spend ten minutes reviewing your backlinks and brand mentions. Spend ten minutes writing down the three most likely causes and the fix for each. This routine usually reveals the main issue.

Traffic problems in local and global contexts

Run the checks in technical SEO guide.

Locally

  • New sites need indexing and local signals
  • Competitor strength by area
  • Thin service pages

Internationally

  • Competitive terms need authority
  • Country targeting mistakes
  • AI summaries reduce clicks

What to do after you find the cause

Prioritise fixes by effort and impact. Fix indexing and technical blockers first, then improve content that is almost ranking, such as pages on page two. Next, create missing pages for valuable queries. Finally, invest in links and mentions. Track progress weekly in Search Console. Expect improvement over weeks, not days, and keep a log of changes so you can see which actions helped.

Where I look first

When someone tells me they have no traffic, I check indexing first, then whether the pages match what people search for. Those two explain most of the cases I see.

  • My suggestion: check Search Console before changing anything.
  • Be patient with new sites.

When traffic is the wrong goal

Sometimes the issue is not volume but relevance. A site with modest traffic that converts well may be healthier than one with high traffic that never enquires. Define the audience you want and measure leads and sales, not only sessions. If you want help turning traffic into customers, our lead generation agency page explains how we connect SEO, ads and conversion work.

Why is there no traffic? Quick diagnosis

Check these before changing anything.

  • Pages indexed in Google
  • Targeting realistic keywords
  • Content matches intent
  • Site loads fast
  • No penalties or manual actions

How we handle this for clients

When a client says their site gets no traffic, we open Search Console before anything else. If it is not set up, that is the first job. We check how many pages are indexed, whether impressions exist at all and which queries appear. Zero impressions points to an indexing or technical problem; impressions without clicks points to rankings, titles or intent. That single split saves a lot of wasted effort.

We then work down the list of likely causes in order and stop when we find the main one, rather than producing a long generic audit. The client gets a short written diagnosis that names the cause, shows the evidence and lists fixes in priority order. After fixes go live, we track impressions, clicks and enquiries over the following weeks so both sides can see whether the diagnosis was right.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you get in touch.

How long should I wait for traffic?

A new site often needs several months before it gets steady search traffic, depending on competition and how much work goes in. Check Search Console after the first few weeks for impressions, which show Google is testing your pages. If impressions stay at zero, look for indexing or technical problems rather than waiting longer.

Does paying for ads improve SEO?

No, paying for Google Ads does not directly improve your organic rankings. Ads and organic results are run separately. Ads can still help indirectly by bringing visitors, testing which keywords convert and building brand awareness, which may lead to more branded searches. Use ads data to inform your SEO choices.

Should I redesign my site?

Redesign only if your current site cannot be fixed efficiently, for example if it is very slow, impossible to update or built on an outdated platform. Most traffic problems come from indexing, content or authority issues that a redesign will not solve. If you do redesign, plan redirects to protect existing rankings.

How do I check if Google has indexed my site?

Search site:yourdomain.com in Google for a rough view, then open Search Console's page indexing report for accurate data. It lists indexed pages and explains why others are excluded, such as noindex tags, redirects or duplicates. Use the URL Inspection tool to check individual pages and request indexing after fixes.

Can you help with this for my business?

Yes. Send your website through the form and tell us how long it has been live. We will check indexing, technical health, content and links to find which of these problems is holding you back. Then we will explain what we would fix first and what you could do yourself.
